2 Altar Servers New Altar Servers: If you would like to be an a Altar Server, please follow these steps: 1) have your Mom or Dad send me an with your name, age, grade level (5th grade or older); 2) specify two preferred Mass time(s) at which you are available to serve per month; 3) dress neatly - jeans allowed, but no sneakers, sweatpants or flip flops please; 4) there will be one practice during the school year; the date and time will be announced in the bulletin in the near future. 5) arrival time when scheduled to serve -15 minutes before Mass begins. 3 Collection for Natural Disasters (October 14th and 15th) The USCCB has written to the Bishops requesting that they schedule a special collection within the diocese to assist those suffering from a seemingly unprecedented number of natural disasters. As you know, two emergency collections have already been called for Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma. The Church in the Caribbean - especially the Diocese of St. Thomas, the six dioceses of Puerto Rico, and Cuba have suffered significant devastation. The Church in Mexico experienced substantial damage, due to the earthquake, in several of the dioceses, some of which are the poorest in the country. Many of our parishioners have family connections in these areas. We pray in solidarity for all those who are suffering in these days. Your continued remembrance at Mass on the weekend is deeply appreciated. The Bishop has authorized an additional collection to assist these devastated areas. The collection will be taken October 14th and 15th. Please remit all collected monies to Holy Spirit and indicate natural disaster collection on the check memo section. Thank You! -3-

4 DEACON LACHLAN During the month of October, we focus in a particular way on Respect for Life issues. Catholics throughout the country, and indeed the whole world, pray for an end to what Pope St. John Paul called the culture of death. Sadly, we live today in a society, where the value placed on human life, has been devalued by our throw away culture. Very often the Catholic Church is criticized for being interested only in stopping abortions, and while we as practicing Catholics believe that abortion is certainly wrong, we also believe that all human life is sacred from the moment of conception to the moment of natural death. No institution does more than the Catholic Church to care for those in need, whether it be a child in the mother s womb, through every stage of life, supporting those who otherwise would be forgotten by society. This week at Holy Spirit we experienced a very powerful witness from the men and women of the parish who are working and praying to enlighten our society on the evils of the culture of death, while promoting respect for life. Our Knights of Columbus were at Holy Spirit last Sunday, selling chances after all the Masses to help fund their charitable works. The knights are a great example to us in all the works they do supporting right to life issues, and we should always encourage and support them. They are always looking for Catholic men to join them in their many charitable efforts, which include Special Olympics, a Special Needs basketball tournament, support to families affected by 9/11, and the purchase of ultrasound machines, to provide pre-natal services to women in need. We should be proud of our husbands/brothers/sons and friends, who are not afraid to stand up and be counted as followers of Jesus Christ. Similarly, the women of the parish, specifically the Rosary Altar Society and the Respect for Life Group, came to church on Monday evening for Rosary and Benediction in support of all pro-life initiatives. Once again, Holy Spirit parishioners, this time wives/mothers/godmothers/daughters, coming together publicly to proclaim to those who don t believe and to the many who sit on the fence. that all human life is a gift from God, and as such, is sacred. May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen -4-

6 All Soul s Day Envelopes We are approaching November, traditionally the month of the Holy Souls. A Novena of Masses is offered up during the month for our deceased friends and relatives. If you wish to have a loved one remembered at this Novena, there are envelopes available throughout the church, where you may list the names of your loved ones. The envelopes can be dropped in the collection basket at any of the Sunday Masses over the next few weeks. Pro-Life News ADOPT-A-BABY PROGRAM Once again the Holy Spirit Pro-life Committee is happy to announce the Spiritual Adopt-a-Baby Prayer Program. To help celebrate Respect Life Month the program will begin the weekend of October 14/15. The purpose of this program is to have the parish community pray for unborn babies in danger of abortion and to educate parishioners about the development of the unborn child over the nine-month period before birth. The members of our parish family will have the opportunity to spiritually adopt a child who is newly conceived. In filling out the prayer card, a commitment is made to pray for this child. In addition, everyone is invited to name the child for whom they will be praying. This helps to give the baby the humanity he/she deserves. The sign up cards will be available at each of the church entrances. -8-
