1 All about Egypt WebQuest Description: A dive into the ancient world of the Egyptians. Grade Level: 9-12 Curriculum: Social Studies Keywords: Egypt,pyramid,pharoah Published On: :41:35 Last Modified: :55:13 WebQuest URL: As an expert archeologist, I am sure you already know Ancient Egypt was the birthplace of one of the world's first civilizations. This advanced culture arose about 5,000 years ago in the Nile River Valley in northeastern Africa. It thrived for over 2,000 years and so became one of the longest lasting civilizations in history. The ancient Egyptians made outstanding contributions to the development of civilization. They created the world's first national government, basic forms of arithmetic, and a 365-day calendar. They invented a form of picture writing called hieroglyphics. They also invented papyrus, a paper-like writing material made from the stems of papyrus plants. The Egyptians developed one of the first religions to emphasize life after death. They built great cities in which many skilled architects, doctors, engineers, painters, and sculptors worked. The best-known achievements of the ancient Egyptians, however, are the pyramids they built as tombs for their rulers.. These gigantic stone structures marvels of architectural and engineering skills have been preserved by the dry climate for about 4,500 years. They serve as spectacular reminders of the glory of ancient Egypt. You are being recruited by the Duluth Museum to create a comprehensive brochure about ancient Egypt so that other explorers can experience the adventures of the Egyptians. Your journey will be taking you into many different aspects of their cutlure and heritage. Please select "Process" to begin. The museum would like you to work with a team of archeologists to ensure accuracy. As a team you will need to divide the research so everyone has an equal amount of work. A good place to start would be the DHS library and your textbook. As you work, be sure to save any pictures you come across and where you got them, so you can add them to your adventure guide. A file has been created for each group on the shared drive. To write you guide, you must complete the following tasks in order so every archeologists is an expert in all fields. Please print the 'museum stamp book' at the bottom of the page. After completing each step, you will need to get a museum approval stamp in order to move on to the next step. Step One. Title Page: On your title page, include your guide title, authors, and class period. Be sure to inlcude a picture that will captivate your audience. Step Two. Map/Geography: Geography was one of the factors which led to the success of the Egyptian civilization. Draw a map of Egypt. Locate and identify the following physical features: Cairo, Alexandria, Giza, Rosetta, Nile River, Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, Valley of the Kings. Kings/Queens: History defines an empire by its leadership, this was true for the pharoahs of Egypt. Make a timeline of Pharoahs and Queens. Label, with dates, the following rulers on your timeline: Ahhotep, Kamose, Hatshepsut, Thutmose III, Rameses II, Piankhi, Tutankhamen, Amenhotep IV, Titi, Cleopatria VII. Egyptian Leaders - information on some Egyptian leaders Egyptian Kingdoms - divides leaders by kingdom dates & nbsp; Egyptian Pharoahs - another site that divides the leaders by kingdoms Step Four. Daily Life: The daily life of the ancient Egyptians was very important to the survival of the civilization. Describe the following aspects of Egyptian daily life in one paragraph for each: Education, Shelter, Clothing, Recreation,

Funerals: One of the strangest and most noble practices of the Egyptians was the practice of mummification. Create a table or chart showing the step-by-step process of mummification. Mummification - Explains the purpose and practice of mummification Process - Explains the process of mummification Exploration - shows examples and stories of mummification Step Six. Temples were very important to the Egyptians, not just because of their intended purpose, but also because of their magnificant architecture. A couple of the most important temples were the Temple of Karnak at Luxor, Temple of Dendera, Abu Simbal. Choose one of these temples and find the following information: How big was it? When was it built? Of what is it made? For what purpose was it built? The Egyptian writing system was one of the most important contributions. Their hieroglyphics made way for the Pheonician alphabet, and eventually our own. Use the translator on the resources at the bottom of this page to translate all of your team's names into hieroglyphs. Draw the symbols that represent your names. Of all the wonders of the Egyptians, the Pyramids are most likely their greatest. These Pyramids can still be seen today, and are aligned in a perfect prism. Draw a blueprint of one of the existing Pyramids. Be sure to include height, base, width. Also answer the following questions: How many blocks are in the pyramid? How heavy are those blocks? How were pyramids built? Calendar. Another important contribution of the Egyptians was their calendar. Explain how they came up with this calendar and what it consisted of.
