1 COURSE DESCRIPTION AP World is an intensive, college level course studying the patterns of development and interaction between various social organizations from pre-history to the present. The purpose of the AP World History course is to develop greater understanding of evolution of global processes and contacts, in interaction with different types of human societies. This understanding is advanced through a combination of selective factual knowledge and appropriate analytical skills. The course highlights the nature of changes in international frameworks and their causes and consequences, as well as comparisons among major societies. The course emphasizes relevant factual knowledge deployed in conjunction with leading interpretive issues and types of historical evidence. Focused primarily on the past thousand years of global experience, the course builds on an understanding of cultural, institutional, and technological precedents that, along with geography, set the human stage prior to 1000 C.E. (College Board, AP World History) COURSE ORGANIZATION Unlike many traditional World History courses, APWH is not categorized by independent civilizations moving chronologically through time. Nor is the course limited to the traditional major European civilizations or the development of western civilization. Instead, APWH is setting the tone for a radically new method of studying and teaching the history of the world using a set framework of time periods or periodization. Within these periods, we will emphasize the interactions between civilizations and look to understand the impact of these interactions on the world as a whole. AP WORLD HISTORY: PERIODIZATION CHART PERIOD TITLE DATE RANGE 1 Technological and Environmental Transformations???? 600 B.C.E. 2 Organization and Reorganization of Human Societies 600 B.C.E. to 600 C.E. 3 Regional and Trans-regional Interactions 600 C.E. to Global Interactions 1450 to Industrialization and Global Interactions 1750 to Accelerating Global Change and Realignments 1900 to the Present SUMMER READING PACKET: Contained within this packet is the required reading assignment for all sophomores enrolled in AP World History for the school year.
