3 St. John Neumann Roman Catholic Church Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. John Neumann, HAPPY FATHER S DAY! As you read this I ll be in Joliet, Illinois for our first-ever family reunion on the Jankowski side of our family. So, to all the fathers, grandfathers, godfathers, step-fathers, and foster fathers, I d like to wish you all a very Happy Father s Day! May God continue to bless you as you let his love shine through all you do! RUMMAGE THANKS Thanks so much to SJN s Men s Club and Marthas & Marys and all the other volunteers for all the hard work that went into making the 2 nd -Time Treasures Rummage Sale such a great success! I even found a great picture of Blessed John XXIII which I quickly added to my collection. I believe we reported a profit of over $3,100!!! Not only was it a financial success, but I was so impressed how the items were organized. It was almost like going to a rummage mall! Each year brings new old things, so I can t wait to see what next year will bring! BLESSING OF EXPECTANT PARENTS NEXT WEEKEND In December we started a new tradition of blessing those parents who are awaiting the birth of their children. Six months later, it s time to do it again. Therefore, next weekend we will invite all expectant parents to come forward for a special blessing at the end of the Prayer of the Faithful. We look forward to, once again, accompanying these men and women as they cooperate with God s gift of giving life. MY INCARDINATION IS COMPLETE! On Monday, June 3 rd, Bishop Pepe officially incardinated three priests as full members of the diocesan priesthood in our Diocese of Las Vegas: myself, Fr. Gene Kinney and Fr. Ruben Bedoya. am so very happy to have been among them as I now call this diocese my home. With my incardination, I am no longer a member of the Conventual Franciscans of St. Bonaventure Province. It s difficult to say goodbye to the past 34 years of my life. I entered the Conventual Franciscans right after high school, and these friars are the ones who have inspired me and helped form me into the priest I am today. The experiences I had as a friar and the friendships I have made over the years will never be forgotten. I will always hold a special place in my heart for these friars and certainly would encourage anyone who is considering a vocation to religious life to keep in mind the Conventual Franciscans. The friars have been so supportive of this decision of mine to join the Diocese of Las Vegas and for that I will always be grateful. Please pray for them as they continue to live the ideals of St. Francis of Assisi and inspire others to live in God s love. YOUR NEW PASTOR With my incardination complete, Bishop Pepe announced that, effective July 1, 2013, I will become the second pastor of SJN. I really couldn t be any happier to continue my ministry among you in this new capacity. This assignment is for a term of six years, so I look forward to some stability as we all move forward together. I humbly ask for your prayers for my ministry that, together with all of you, we may give glory and praise to God with joy-filled hearts! Bishop Pepe will join us on Saturday, September 7 th for the 4:00 PM Mass to formally install me as your new pastor. I hope you might be able to be present that day as we look forward to the future and all it holds! 4 St. John Neumann Roman Catholic Church HOPE AND FORGIVENESS There were some interesting conceptions of sin prevalent in the time of the Hebrew scriptures. There was the belief that God punished sin immediately. Those who suffered disease or misfortune were, therefore, sinners getting their due from the Almighty. Today s first reading hints at another kind of God. When David admits his sin, Nathan declares, The LORD on his part has forgiven your sin (2 Samuel 12:13b). Here was not a vengeful God but a merciful God. What good news that must have been to David and those who, like him, could be honest enough to admit their sinfulness! Jesus is the good news of God s mercy and forgiveness incarnate. Without Jesus, perhaps the Good News would have been too good to believe, too difficult to imagine. But there he is in today s Gospel, the God-man, forgiving a sinner and declaring that she is forgiven because of her great love. There is hope, then, for the rest of us sinners, if only we love enough! Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. In this evening series we will consider, and practice, different methods of prayer, such as: prayer using one s imagination, as taught y St. Ignatius of Loyola; meditating on sacred scripture; centering prayer; praying in nature; a prayer for freedom from excessive emotional needs and paralyzing fears; finding God in the ordinary activities of life; and other ways of drawing closer to God. The SJNC pantry relies on the generous donations of our parish family. The next time you are at the grocery store please consider purchasing some extra food for our families in need. Please leave your donations in the big wooden box in the lobby. God bless you for supporting the Outreach Pantry. To our Outreach donors THANK-YOU for All That You Do and God Bless! On June 12th the Outreach ministry served 146 families; 359 children, 329 adults, and 45 seniors. Wish lists for the Pantry Pasta Sauce, mac n cheese, canned tuna canned vegetables & fruit, soups, Ramen, canned proteins (i.e., chicken, spam) pasta, peanut butter, rice, dried beans. Why Register in the parish? Many people regularly attending mass at our parish are not registered as parishioners (Faith Formation registration is not a parish registration). It is important to be registered and to use your donation envelopes so that we have records of your activity in the parish. If you ever request a letter for Baptism, Marriage, Confirmation, a tax statement, being a godparent or sponsor, or if you would like to have your child enrolled in our Faith Formation Program, or for many other reasons, we must check our records to confirm that you indeed attend here before we can make a statement to that effect. We also cannot sign affidavits stating that you are a member of the parish (even if you attend mass here), if we have no records to that effect. If you would like to register, we encourage you to do so by completing the registration form found in the welcome flyer in the lobby or in the parish office. 6 Stewardship Visiting Mary The St. John Neumann Visiting Mary can visit the home of a registered parishioner for one week. She can be picked up on Saturday afternoon at 3 pm and must be returned to the parish office by 12 pm the following Saturday. The statue comes with prayers, songs, meditations and directions on how to pray the rosary, as well as some special intentions requested by our administrator. Wedding celebrations always require some savvy planning, and people who have a talent for hospitality in the mix. At the wedding feast at Cana, the mother of Jesus was recruited to deal with some of the details of the banquet, and when a very understandable crisis arose, she did what she could to rescue the party. Anyone who has ever run out of ice, dessert, or table settings knows the stress! Slowly, the memory of Jesus Christ s blessing of this marriage feast led the Church to form a way to bless marriages. A thousand years ago weddings migrated from the family home to the doors of the church, where the celebration was held in public view. From this practice came a prayer called the Nuptial Blessing, one of the most solemn prayers in our tradition. It is very much like the prayers by which baptismal water and chrism are consecrated, the ordination prayer over a priest, and the Eucharistic Prayers over bread and wine. Four hundred fifty years ago, weddings moved inside the church building. Please call the parish office to sign up for a class and begin the process. Baptisms are celebrated during the Mass. Sacrament of Marriage Consult with the priest before you set the date. A minimum of six to eight months preparation is needed. Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick Call the parish office at any time if you or a family member seeks the Sacrament. If possible, please try to call before your loved one is in the active process of dying. Communion for the Sick or Homebound Contact the parish office during office hours. In case of hospitalization, inform the admissions office that you are a Catholic and would like to receive communion. Mass Intentions Scheduled in the parish office. The calendar fills up rapidly, so Mass intentions may have to be scheduled up to a year in advance. House Blessings Parishioners are encouraged to bless their own homes. Holy water and appropriate prayers are provided by the parish. Faith Formation Registration Registration began in April. Classes are held from September to May.
