FORGIVERS THE ORIGINAL CURRENCY Labor was the first price, the original purchasemoney that was paid for all things. It was not by gold or by silver, but by labor, that all wealth of the world was originally purchased. Adam Smith A happy marriage is a union of two good forgivers. 3 PASTOR S NOTES, STEWARDSHIP, 2ND COLLECTION Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. John Neumann: Friday, August 24th, saw an amazing event here at St. John Neumann. The Summer Music Festival featured our own Relly Coloma and the amazing music he played on the Yamaha Clavinova, and our parish choirs and instrumentalists under the direction of Sean Davis and Lissy De Jesus. I m sure everyone who attended felt it was a great night of entertainment and joy! If you didn t get to make it this year...don t miss the next one! Many thanks to all those who helped put the whole thing on under the direction of Letty Cristobal. And thanks also to all who helped prepare and serve those delicious appetizers and beverages that nourished the tummies. It all was so much more than I expected! Thanks to EVERYONE who sponsored the event, gave donations and placed ads in the souvenir booklet so greatly designed by our own Jay De Jesus. And thanks also to our parish staff who helped in so many varied ways. You re all wonderful! The most important aspect of this gathering is that it was prepared by our parish family for our parish family. While it was an amazing fundraiser (raising over $14,000!), it was also a time to enjoy each other as brothers and sisters in Christ. Those who were in attendance and/or supported this event, spoke volumes about their own commitment to being a part of this wonderful faith community at St. John Neumann. I remain ever grateful to be a part of God s people here in North Las Vegas! This past Monday, August 27th, found our parish in the news with the report of the theft of our poor box which occurred on Sunday, June 24th. Here s the official statement released by the Diocese of Las Vegas: LAS VEGAS, NV Father Jim Jankowski, the administrator for St. John Neumann Catholic Church, said today that while they were saddened by the theft from their parish, they do not believe it to be indicative of the generous nature and spirit of the community it serves. We appreciate the efforts and attention of law enforcement with regard to this matter and thank them for their diligence. While this was an unfortunate incident, we feel deeply that this is not a reflection of the greater Las Vegas and North Las Vegas community, and our experience has been one of compassion and generosity even during these tough economic times, said Father Jankowski. Page 3 - September 2, 2012 Additional security measures have been implemented in an attempt to prevent this from happening again in the future. While this incident happened even before my arrival here at St. John Neumann, the police report was just released last week. That s why the media reported the event and did a fine job to help bring this unfortunate incident to some conclusion. Whatever the final outcome, nonetheless, we still remember our obligation to pray for the individuals who carried out this crime. It would be a good thing to pray for them through the intercession of St. Dismas, the penitent good thief, who was crucified with Christ on Calvary. May they have a change of heart and make sincere repentance for their crime. May we continue to reflect the forgiveness of Christ in our own hearts. Peace Always, fr. jim AUGUST 25/26 1st Collection $ 19, nd Collection $ 3, Total for these collections $ 23, Church Attendance 3,000 (our church holds 634). It is important that we all support our children in their learning about our faith so that they continue to become strong and informed members of the Body of Christ. For a real investment in the future of our Church, please support the children and their teachers by being as generous as possible in next week s second collection.

If you are able to help, please contact Elsie Lyon through the parish office at MEET-THE-FATHER MINISTRY You re invited to join Eileen George at a mission retreat from Thurs-Sat., October , 2012, 6 pm at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 1811 Pueblo Vista Drive. Throughout the history of salvation, God has chosen ordinary people to show His love to the world. These people have been given extraordinary gifts to assist in their God given mission. In our times, so wrapped in confusion and uncertainty, the Lord has done just that. Eileen George is a woman with many exceptional supernatural gifts and a unique mission from God. This mission flows from Eileen s unique relationship with God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Her spiritual director states: Eileen knows heaven as we know earth. Eileen s extraordinary gifts of inspired preaching, healing, prophecy and knowledge are just a few of the many supernatural graces that the Father has bestowed upon Eileen to lead His people back or deeper into the life of the Sacraments. The power of her preaching can lead a full church to receive the Sacrament of Penance with many Priests performing the Sacrament for long hours.

7 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Labor Day originated in 1882 in New York City under the aegis of the Knights of Labor. Congress made it a legal holiday in Observing it this week gives us a good opportunity to reflect on the Catholic Church s social teachings for the last century or so. On May 15, 1891, Pope Leo XIII issued the encyclical Rerum Novarum on the condition of the working classes and labor. In doing so, he initiated a century in which Catholic teaching became more and more involved in the social issues of the day. Unfortunately relegated to the shadows while the bright lights of controversy shine on other issues, Catholic social teaching remains largely unknown to many Catholics. It is the Catholic Church that championed such notions as a fair day s pay for a fair day s work, and continues to uphold the dignity of the human person against attacks from governments and corporations. Nearly every pope since Leo XIII has issued teachings on the subject. Take some time this Labor Day to familiarize yourself with some aspect of the Church s social teachings. In doing so, you will be taking responsibility as a member of the Body of Christ to commit yourself to the care of your neighbor. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Retrouvaille (Re-tro-vi)... Weekend on OCTOBER 19-21, 2012 You can save your marriage!! If you are suffering from poor communication, lack of trust and considering separation or divorce Retrouvaille is a program that offers you the chance to rebuild your marriage. Please join us for our next weekend OCTOBER 19-21, To speak to a couple who has made the weekend and for more information call Chuck and Carol Moore for more information at (702) AROUND THE DIOCESE DOERS OF THE WORD The second reading for today begins a five-week series of selections from James, a letter that is classified among the so-called catholic (or universal) epistles because they are addressed to a general audience rather than to one particular community. Today s text offers important advice for Christians of every generation. God is first cited as the author of all gifts, and in particular, reference is made to the gift of baptism by which we have been made the first fruits of the new creation. What follows is advice based on a very Jewish understanding of the word as an active force, operative in the world. We are reminded that unless we, too, become doers of the word, our claim to faith is empty. Today and in subsequent weeks the author reminds us that it is equally important to do the works of love, for example, by caring for the orphans and widows in their affliction. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Worldwide Marriage Encounter The readings today very clearly tell us to keep ourselves unstained by the world so we can honor the Lord with our lips and our hearts. Do your lives reflect this? Husbands and wives do you love one another in word and deed? Allow God to transform your marriage relationship as well by attending a Marriage Encounter weekend; gain the tools to truly love your spouse more and receive the joy that it can bring. The next weekend is September 28-30th in the Las Vegas area. Early registration is highly recommended. For information, call Wayne and Marcia Kessler at For information on Spanish-language weekends, call Javier and Maria Lopez at or Page 7 - September 2, 2012
