We will have a full accounting in next week s bulletin. NEXT WEEKEND S SECOND COLLECTION The second collection during the Christmas Eve/Day Masses is for the Unexpected Expenses. It s happened to you. It s happened to us. Something comes along that needs repair and it certainly wasn t planned for. A need arises that wasn t in the budget. This special second collection will help us with those Unexpected Expenses that come along with surprise. Your generosity will help us soften the blow when the unexpected happens. Thanks for helping us with unexpected! BISHOP PEPE S COMMUNION UPDATE Bishop Pepe recently informed us that he is lifting the ban he had placed on not receiving the Precious Blood and for receiving Communion only in the hand during the concern about the Ebola Virus. He wrote: I am now assured that the imminent threat that was possibly present has now subsided and I believe that it is safe to resume the reception of the Holy Eucharist under both forms as well as reception by mouth. Please note, we will be resuming our practice of receiving the Precious Blood in the near future. Fr. Jim would also like to take this opportunity to remind all of us, as determined by the Bishops of the United States and confirmed by the Holy See, that the sign of reverence before receiving communion is a simple bow of the head and that we receive communion while standing. Genuflections before receiving the Eucharist were never an approved sign of reverence and are quite dangerous. Thanks so much for your cooperation as we remain united in our posture during our entire celebration of the Mass. Baptism Announcement Through the waters of baptism and in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, Zachary A. Cabiles was welcomed into our faith community. FAITH FORMATION SESSIONS There will be no Faith Formation sessions from December 22, 2014 to January 4, Confirmation classes resume on January 4 and all other sessions resume the week of January 5. ANGEL TREE THANK YOU Thank you all for an overwhelming and generous response to our Angel Tree this year. We collected over 950 gifts and 85 gift cards. 4 Welcome one and all! YELLOW RIBBONS FOR CHRISTMAS? In 1973 Tony Orlando & Dawn recorded the famous song, Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree. It was an instant international success. According to Wikipedia, The song is told from the point of view of a prisoner who has completed his three-year sentence but is uncertain if he will be welcomed home. He writes to his love, asking her to tie a yellow ribbon around the ole oak tree in front of the house (which the bus, bringing him home from prison, will pass by) if she wants him to return to her life; if he does not see such a ribbon, he will remain on the bus (taking that to mean he is unwelcome). He asks the bus driver to check, fearful of not seeing anything. To his amazement, the entire bus cheers the response there are 100 yellow ribbons around the tree, a sign he is very much welcome. The yellow ribbon has become a sign of welcome, a sign of hope, a sign of forgiveness, a sign of mercy, a sign of God s compassion and unconditional love for each one of us, even in spite of our limitations and failures. So, during this Christmas season, and inspired by one of Monsignor Joe s recent homilies, the Yellow Ribbons for Christmas are tied around our trees as a sign of our welcome to all those who may have been away from the practice of their faith for one reason or another or to those who may be joining us for the first time, or even to those who may not necessarily want to be here. The ribbons also are a sign of welcome to those who may be considering the Roman Catholic Church as the way to grow in their faith. We re all here for a reason and no one is here by mistake. Yes, ALL are welcome! But, please beware! With these words of welcome comes a warning as well: Don t expect perfection from us here at St. John Neumann, or think we have all the answers, cause we re all sinners and limited as well. Nonetheless, there s always a sincere desire here to do better because we know of God s abiding and deep love within and for each one of us. So, if you want to be part of the imperfect as we support one another along the journey of our faith, give us a try! If you re patient with us, it might just be a good fit! If you already have all the answers and want to mold us into an image of your own liking, then I m sure you ll have to keep looking elsewhere. We all hope you ll give us a try! Please do not make any arrangements such as travel, catering, etc. until you have completed the Baptism preparation process and received a letter confirming the available date and time of Baptism. Sacrament of Marriage Consult with the priest before you set the date. A minimum of six to eight months preparation is needed. Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick Call the parish office at any time if you or a family member seeks the Sacrament. If possible, please try to call before your loved one is in the active process of dying. Communion for the Sick or Homebound Contact the parish office during office hours.
