4 Page 4 My Dear Parishioners, The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) has come to the aid of communities nationwide for over 40 years in an effort to eradicate poverty. CCHD puts into action the words Pope Francis spoke to our youth during World Youth Day, July 25, 2013, never tire of working for a more just world, marked by greater solidarity. CCHD puts these words into action by funding housing, education, and the development of job opportunities. Projects supported by CCHD move beyond providing for basic needs. They work to build healthy, sustainable futures for communities. For example, 10 years ago, Boston s Haley House, created a sixmonth course that includes bakery training, customer relations and basic business principles and now has 70 trainees who have completed the program and are now employed in the Boston area. Haley House also runs cooking classes for at-risk teens and a Transitional Employment Program that provides holistic, individual support to men and women re-entering the community after incarceration. Haley House creates a strong local economy by building human relationships; it carries on Christ s mission to bring glad tidings to the poor liberty to captives sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free (Lk 4:18). This Collection is the primary source of funding for CCHD s anti-poverty grants and education programs. Collection funds offer new hope each year to those living in poverty throughout the United States. Twenty-five percent of the Collection s proceeds stay here in our diocese to fight poverty in our communities and defend the dignity of our neighbors. Help us defend human dignity and show Christ s charity to those in need. Expressing my gratitude for your generosity, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Joseph A. Pepe, D.D., J.C.D. Bishop of Las Vegas For more information about the Collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development and the groups it funds, please visit

5 Page 5 BISHOP PEPE S DIRECTIVES FOR RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION Until notified otherwise, here are the current directives of Bishop Pepe regarding our being proactive against the Ebola virus situation. He stated: out of an abundance of caution for the duration of the virus-related health concerns, those parishes distributing the Eucharist under both species limit distribution to just the Host [and] that the Host be given in the hand, but not on the tongue. As Fr. Jim reminded us, receiving Communion in the hand is no less reverent than on the tongue. And, given this serious concern, it is very important that EVERYONE respect and obey our Bishop s directive to receive Holy Communion ONLY in the hand until directed otherwise. Exceptions are certainly allowed for those whose physical limitations prevent them from receiving communion in the hand. Thanks for your cooperation and obedience to our Bishop. IT S ANGEL TREE TIME AT ST. JOHN NEUMANN Beginning on November 22, our Youth Volunteers will be hosting the Angel Tree gift collections for children from Birth 17 years old. The Gift of Giving is as easy as 1,2,3! 1. Select an Angel Tree Gift Tag Ornament from our tree. 2. Purchase the Gift or Gift Card according to the gift tag you have selected. 3. Deliver the gift unwrapped with the gift tag ornament attached to the collection area next to the Angel Tree. All Gifts must be received no later than Sunday, December 7, Thank you for your generosity and thoughtfulness. May God s peace be with you and your loved ones during this joyous season. THIS THANKSGIVING DAY WILL BE A SPECIAL DAY FOR US AT SJN! It s been our tradition for many years to celebrate Mass on Thanksgiving Day with our own Bishop Joseph Pepe and this year the 9am Mass on Thanksgiving Day (November 27) we will celebrate our 15 th Anniversary as a parish family with Bishop Pepe as well! We look forward to a joyous gathering that celebrates who we are as Welcoming Transformed Generous! For more info contact Lori Gabriel at ext. 214 or lori.gabriel@sjnc.org

WITH LOVING HANDS So often we are defined by the work that we do to make a living. Unpaid work or volunteer work is almost invisible, even though its value to families and to our society is immense. Work done in the home, such as rearing children, is invisible and is not counted in the gross national product, the official evaluation of productivity of our society. The work of rearing children, of guiding adolescents, of donating blood, helping in libraries, delivering meals to seniors, raising funds for not-for-profit organizations, and so on, is coming up short as people are pressed to give more and more of their time and energy to paid jobs. Our "job" is what we do, but our "vocation" is who we are. We are called to serve others, to help those who need us in a variety of situations. We aren't all called to the same work, or the same amount of work. We give what we have, according to our abilities, in fidelity to the call each of us received. Our vocation to serve others is rooted in our baptism. How we live our call is a matter of individual gifts and "talents." Even if our work is unpaid or unappreciated, it is valuable in God's eyes. Work done "with loving hands" is worthwhile and good, even if it is invisible to those who decide what is economically valuable. COME, SHARE YOUR MASTER'S JOY We may not work at what society calls a "full-time job" (defined as being paid). Anyone who cares for children or for ill or frail family members would be grateful if the work ended after a "normal" number of work hours! Work done for love and for the good of another is work indeed, and its payment will be in a different currency. Our call to serve is a call to love, and the payment is joy in God's presence and in the knowledge that the reign of God is being brought closer each day by the work of our hands. Our ultimate call will be to share in our Master's joy.

8 Page 8 OUTREACH (Pantry Hours: Wed. 9am 3pm) The SJN pantry relies on the generous donations of our parish family. 9 Page 9 RITES OF ACCEPTANCE AND WELCOMING Save the date, this year s Celebrating with St. Nick program will be presented on Saturday, December 20 at our SJN Parish Center. Tickets will go on sale after all the Masses beginning, December 6. More details coming soon! This week-end 15 adults and 16 children, along with their sponsors, will participate in the Rite of Acceptance and Rite of Welcoming at the 10:00am Mass in preparation for celebrating the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil this coming April. Those who are unbaptized will celebrate the Rite of Acceptance. Assembling publicly for the first time, the candidates declare their intention to the Church and the Church in turn, carrying out its apostolic mission, accepts them as persons who intend to become its members. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, par. 41) At this point the candidates are accepted by the Church into the Order of Catechumens and begin the next step on their journey toward Christian Initiation at the Easter Vigil. The Rite of Welcoming welcomes baptized persons who are seeking to complete their Christian initiation through the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist or to be received into the Full Communion of the Catholic Church. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, par. 411) This rite acknowledges that due to their baptism, these candidates are already part of the Christian community and we surround them with special care as they continue their preparation to becoming fully initiated into the Church at the Easter Vigil. Please keep these catechumens and candidates in your prayers over the coming months as they continue the journey to take their place at the banquet table of the Eucharist.
