3 Fr. Jim s Letter, Stewardship and Second Collection Nonetheless, no matter what precautions we take, there is no 100% full proof way to avoid the spread of the flu virus. A little prevention, however, can go a long way. Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. John Neumann, A LITTLE PREVENTION CAN GO A LONG WAY Last weekend you heard in the pre-mass announcements some rather obvious and logical ways we all can try and stay healthy during this current flu season. This weekend I d like to present in writing what was heard before all the Masses last weekend. As many of you have heard in the news, this season seems to be a bit more active and serious than the recent past. Therefore, I d like to make a few points to help us all stay as healthy as possible. First, if you do have the flu or are not feeing well, it would be better to stay at home and wait to come back to church once you are recovered. Please remember that God understands and that it is not a sin to miss Mass if you re not feeling well. It would be better to get well first rather than spread any virus to others. Second, if you are present and not feeling well, it would be very prudent to observe the following points: 1. Avoid any physical contact with others. 2. If you are about to sneeze or cough, please do so into a Kleenex or hanky, or if it s sudden, please avoid covering your sneeze or cough with your hands and do so into your upper arm area. 3. At the sign of peace, if you are not feeling well or if you would rather not share the sign of peace with a physical handshake, please offer a gesture with your hand as you wish the peace of Christ to those near you. 4. If you are not feeling well, you should avoid receiving the Precious Blood. You may, however, approach the minister of the Precious Blood and make the appropriate reverence, which is a bow of your head while standing. After making this reverence, you can then proceed to your seat. If everyone observes these rather obvious precautions, we should probably remain relatively healthy. One more note: Please realize, however, that not all coughs and sneezes are due to a virus. Someone may have allergies or something that is not contagious. Nonetheless, it would be very prudent to observe the aforementioned precautions. I know these comments may seem to be rather obvious and logical, but it doesn t hurt to remind us all of the simple ways we can observe to remain as healthy as possible. Thank you for your consideration. Lectionary Based Scripture Study Join us for our next class on Thursday, January 24th at 8:45am. We will reflect on next Sunday s Gospel (Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21). The Spirit of the Lord has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives.
7 A VISIBLE GOD We find it difficult to convey ideas to people unless we can actually show them something, demonstrate what we mean. God, who is invisible and truly beyond human understanding, apparently faces the same difficulty. People want to see, not just listen to an idea. So God gave us Jesus Christ, God made visible in the world. During these past weeks we have seen how Jesus was revealed as an infant to the shepherds and the magi, and then began his adult public life at his baptism by John. Today s Gospel reading tells us of his first sign, providing wine for the wedding guests at Cana. Around the Diocese TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The cause of church unity is commended to Christians for prayer and action every year around this time. This week is not so much to focus on the many divisions within the Christian family, but on bonds of faith and mission. Even though Christians have always shown an inclination to fracture, spin off, and mutate into new expressions, recent history shows some new points of convergence and agreement. Catholics are more firmly rooted in the word of God, for example, and many Protestants are more likely to celebrate Communion than in years past. Some denominations are merging and pooling resources, and people from various traditions are collaborating on projects. Of course, even Jesus, God made visible, was not always easily understood in his own day, nor is he even now. So we have to ponder what we see: the poverty and simplicity of his birth, his humility and openness before John the Baptist, his kindness and compassion toward people in their ordinary problems, such as running short of wine at a wedding. Yet it is in coming to know Jesus that we come to know God. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Worldwide Marriage Encounter Jesus worked his first public miracle at the wedding feast in Cana. Jesus produced an overabundance of wine which many believe symbolizes the overabundance of grace Jesus gives to the couples in the sacrament of matrimony. We have more grace than we could ever need available to us, no matter what circumstances we face, and all we have to do is call out to our blessed Savior, Jesus Christ. Allow God to strengthen, renew, rekindle and even transform you marriage sacrament; sign up today to attend a Marriage Encounter weekend. The next weekends are February and May 3-5, 2013, in the Las Vegas area. Early registration is highly recommended. For more information, call Wayne and Marcia Kessler at For information on Spanishlanguage weekends, call Javier and Maria Lopez at or Page 7 - January 20, 2013 The call of this week is to be mindful of the diversity of our traditions and customs while treasuring what we hold in common. The old advice to lighten up is good medicine, because sometimes our differences are delightful and amusing. If someone says, Let us pray, a Catholic might close the eyes, bow the head and fold hands; a Protestant reach out and clasp hands with the person in the next chair; and someone belonging to an Orthodox tradition might stand up with eyes wide open. Each has taken a different path, but the goal is always the same. This is a week not for focusing on the well-worn paths of divergence, but for mutual delight in a common goal.
