3 STEWARDSHIP, 2ND COLLECTION No SJNC! If you go away during the summer, please remember that our parish doesn t vacation; it s here to serve you all year long, and it needs the resources you provide to continue parish obligations. Your stewardship contribution is very important. Should you be taking a trip out of the area, we wish you safe travels. A good resource to use while planning your trip is This website provides information on mass times and locations all over the world!! Father s Day Novena Father s Day is Sunday, June 17th. Whether ill or healthy, living or deceased, our fathers play a unique role in our lives, forming us in ways spiritual, emotional and educational. Honor your fathers, grandfathers or fathers-in-law by including them in a special novena of masses. Cards and novena envelopes are available in the lobby. Simply return the envelope with your donation and the names of those you would like included. A $10 offering for the mass and card is suggested. Second Collection Next week s second collection is for the poor. The definition of the poor has changed, because so many of us are having difficulties with economic survival. Recently more and more, families are seeking help with not only food, but with the bare necessities of shelter and utilities. Please be as generous as possible in next week s second collection. 4 PARISH & COMMUNITY NEWS TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION A new name for this feast, long known as Corpus Christi or Body of Christ, points to an important recovery of Communion from the shared chalice, the Precious Blood, in the Roman Catholic liturgy. For many centuries, only the priest received from the chalice. Now, over the last forty years, the cup has been offered more frequently to the faithful. Sadly, perhaps because it is not offered at all Masses, or because people are free to pass by the offered cup, it can be seen by some as a take it or leave it option. Some important meanings surface, however, when we drink from the common cup, such as our desire to participate in the pouring out of Christ s love. Bread is the staff of life, eaten by necessity even in times of pain. Wine, on the other hand, is the mark of festivity, a pledge of joy, a sign of unity between our altar table and the banquet feast of heaven. The center of the Gospel today is Jesus speaking of the pouring out of his blood, and his offer of a cup of blessing to be shared as a sign of his love. There is no better response than to take and drink, and no better way to mark this feast. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TV Masses Taping TV Masses will be celebrated and taped on Wednesday, June 20th at 8, 8:45, 9:30, 10:15, & 11:00 am. These Masses are for the benefit of the elderly and shut-ins in our diocese. They are a part of our Catholic Christian family. Our attendance helps them to feel more involved through our participation as we respond to the celebrant, and sing. If you can attend any or all of these Masses, (especially the later Masses) you can become part of an essential ministry. The masses can be viewed Sundays at 7:30 am on channel 33, or cable channel 6. Come Tour Catholic Charities! Tours of the main campus of Catholic Charities will be offered to parishioners at 9:30am: Wednesday, June 27th Tours last approximately one hour. Catholic Charities is located at 1501 N. Las Vegas Blvd. between Owens and Foremaster and directly across from Woodlawn Cemetery. Comfortable shoes are recommended as the campus encompasses 8 acres. For more info, contact Catholic Charities Development Office Announcing: WORLD YOUTH DAY 2013 Pope Benedict has called the young church to join him for World Youth Day, July 23-28, 2013 in Brazil; just about 500 days from now. 5 SACRISTANS NEEDED We have a short term and long term shortage of sacristans at all the weekend Masses. If you are interested in serving in this ministry, please contact Mary Santos in the Parish Office. All you need is reverence for the sacred vessels and their function. A sacristan provides a brief hands-on training session for those who may serve. PARISH & COMMUNITY NEWS Outreach needs... Outreach is in need of a Summer/male volunteer on Tuesdays from 8:30 am to 12 pm. A driver with a truck is needed to pick up and deliver between 9am-11 am from Three Square on Pecos & Craig to St. John Neumann. A volunteer with a truck to pick up food from St. Anthony of Padua at Centennial High School on the 2nd Sunday of the month at 11:30 am. If you are willing to help, please contact the Parish Office. SJNC Marthas & Marys Our next meeting is scheduled for June 7 pm in the Youth Room. All women ages 18 and over are welcome to join us for prayer, fellowship and fun. MEN S CLUB Please note that the Men s Club meeting has changed. They will meet on Wednesday, July 11 at 7 pm in the Youth Room. WELCOME TO ST. JOHN NEUMANN! If you re new to St. John Neumann, check out what we collect in order to add to our building fund: Crushed cans, Cell phones, Pennies for Heaven, Used Name Brand Ink & Toner printer cartridges Also, the Outreach ministry accepts donations of clothing and food for the poor. We are a Stewardship Parish and are provided an opportunity to contribute toward the growth of our parish. Information on our Fruitful Vine Stewardship process including the Fruitful Vine Stewardship Commitment form are available in the parish office. WHY REGISTER IN THE PARISH? Many people regularly attending mass at our parish are not registered as parishioners. Faith Formation registration is not parish registration. It is important to be registered and to use your donation envelopes so that we have records of your activity in the parish. If you ever request a letter for Baptism, Marriage, Confirmation, a tax statement, being a godparent or sponsor, or if you would like to have your child enrolled in our Faith Formation Program, or many other reasons, we must check our records. We can verify that you attend by seeing your identifiable donations (and/or active participation in church ministry) that have been posted in the computer. We cannot sign affidavits stating that you are a member of the parish (even if you do attend mass here), if we have no records to that effect. If you would like to register, we encourage you to do so by completing the registration form found in the welcome flyer in the lobby or in the parish office. Please return it either by mail, or placing it in the collection basket, or dropping it off at the parish office. Thank you very much. Page 5 - June 10, 2012
6 PARISH AND COMMUNITY NEWS A big SJNC thank you!!! To our SJNC Marthas and Marys, SJNC Mens Club and SJNC volunteers that put together this year s fabulous 2nd Time Treasures Church Rummage Sale.. The Rummage Sale raised $4,0oo towards the building fund!!! Congratulations! God bless you all for your hard work and dedication. Thank you to everyone who stopped by the sale and supported with your purchases. Make your Stewardship and/or Sunday Offering On-line It s secure, convenient and easy to setup! Thank you to those families who faithfully mail their weekly donations or take advantage of online donating through the St. John Neumann website. To date roughly 30% of our weekly offertory is received either electronically or by mail. Donating electronically is an efficient way to make contributions to the parish. The beauty of donating through our website is that you are totally in charge of your contributions. You can make a one-time donation or set up ongoing donations. You can also change the amount you want to contribute any time you wish. And by contributing online there is no need to worry about forgetting envelopes! Consider using this convenient method of donating and remember...when you see those around you passing the offertory basket and not dropping anything in, they could be donating online. To view our on-line donations program, visit our parish website at and click on the blue box in the upper right corner of the home page. Thank you for your continued support of St. John Neumann! 7 AROUND THE DIOCESE SACRIFICE Today the Church focuses on the Eucharist. Today s readings remind us how connected to ancient blood sacrifices we are when offering our unbloody sacrifice. The reading from Exodus describes a solemn ritual designed so the Israelites would never forget their covenant with God. The reading from the Letter to the Hebrews turns us from those ancient animal sacrifices, the first efforts to worship the living God. Our sacrifice is the body and blood of the Son of God. Because of Christ we have a new covenant. The Gospel from Mark retells the establishment of that covenant, the familiar story of the Last Supper. Juxtaposed with the story of animal sacrifice as it is here, we are challenged to listen with new attention, to remember the great price paid for our salvation. Jesus gave his body and every drop of his blood for us. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Guardian Angel Cathedral Announcement: Ethics in the Marketplace is the title of the ministry of Jesuit, Fr. Max Oliva, who makes his home in the Vegas valley at St. Christopher s. On the last Wednesday of each month, Fr. Oliva will preside at the noon Mass at Guardian Angel Cathedral. The focus of his homilies will be Living One s Faith Values in the Workplace. All are welcome. For info on Fr. Oliva s work, please visit Future dates of this Mass are: 6/27, 7/25 Page 7 - June 10, 2012 Please pray for Tony West Born to new life May 13, Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John Neumann Catholic Church on June 16, 2012 at 1:30 pm. May he, and all who sleep in Christ, find in Your presence light, happiness and peace. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Worldwide Marriage Encounter The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ is the most precious gift that God has given to each one of us. God feeds us, nourishes us and gives us the grace that transforms us to live the holy life he has called each of us to live.
