VICTIM ADVOCACY NUMBER Advocacy is available for any individual who has been sexually and/ or physically abused. The 24-hour hotline number is:

3 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time August 26, 2018 Page 3 Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. John Neumann, Given the shocking and disturbing results of the Pennsylvania Grand Jury report published on August 14th in reference to sexual misconduct allegations involving some 300 priests and over 1000 victims in the state of Pennsylvania, it is important to remember that these allegations are not new reports of abuse, but span back as far as the 1940s. Nonetheless, the graphic details of the abuse and some instances of an intentional cover-up by the hierarchy will cause even the most hardened heart to shutter. The ongoing pain and suffering of the victims and their families and friends are real. They need our prayers and support. Any words of apology and pledges to help bring about healing for the victims don t seem to help much when the severe wounds of the past are once again torn open and exposed. Others react to the scandalous and sinful behavior of priests and bishops with feelings of disgust, disappointment, betrayal, all of which are all understandable. Unfortunately, some are not able to control their negative reactions and rage. An innocent priest from Indiana, without any connections to any abuse allegations, was recently brutally assaulted by an enraged individual who choked him and slammed his head to the ground while saying This is for all the kids! We don t fight fire with fire. Vengeance helps no one. Displaced acts of rage, especially upon anyone who is innocent of any wrongdoing, does nothing to bring about justice, and most certainly accomplishes no good. I fear our country has become so accustomed to attacks with vicious words or physical violence, that any acts of vengeance, even upon the innocent, seems to be accepted, justified and, in some cases, even promoted and affirmed. We would be naive to think that sexual abuse occurs only within the Catholic Church. It also happens in families, schools, other communities of worship, workplaces, and the list goes on and on, but that never gets reported for all to see. Our care and concern should be for ALL victims, including those who don t get any help or attention simply because it s not newsworthy. They suffer tremendously as well, most oftentimes, silently. So, what do we do? How do we seek healing to break the cycle of vengeance? I believe our Holy Father, Pope Francis, gives us a roadmap in the August 20th letter he wrote to the People of God. It is inserted in this bulletin. He quotes St. Paul s 1st Letter to the Corinthians 12:26: "When one member suffers, all suffer together with it. And so, Pope Francis proposes that all the Church, the People of God, embrace some sort of prayer and penance. Through our prayers and penances we will be in solidarity with all those victims of sexual abuse who have suffered at the hands of our own clergy and bishops and those countless and unrecognized victims who have suffered and continue to suffer from sexual abuse beyond the confines of the Catholic Church. Please take some time to consider what kind of prayer and penance you and/or your family will choose in solidarity with ALL victims. Through our prayers and penances, may we and ALL victims find peace always, Fr. James Michael Jankowski Pastor

4 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time August 26, 2018 Page 4 TRAVEL SIZE TOILETRIES NEEDED FOR THE HOMELESS Laudato Sí Ministry of SJN is again asking for your help in helping those brothers and sisters who find themselves living on the streets of Las Vegas. As people of God we can help in many ways, so from this day forward, we are asking for your help in collecting travel/hotel size toiletries for Catholic Worker so they can hand out to the homeless in Las Vegas. Most of us take for granted that we have a bar of soap, shampoo, body lotion, toothpaste or even a toothbrush at our disposal whenever we need it. Many do not have those luxury items, and need them disparately. So, as you travel and stay in your favorite motel/hotel bring back those small toiletry items and drop them into the box located by the doors as you enter church. You can also purchase these items at the dollar store. And remember to pray for those brothers and sisters who may not have what we have, and that these toiletries items you have collected will help them in some small way. Thank you and God Bless. DON T FORGET TO DROP OFF TOILETRY ITEMS IN THE BOX BY THE DOORS AT SJN TO HELP OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS FINDING THEMSELVES LIVING ON THE STREETS OF LAS VEGAS. VOTIVE CANDLE ENROLLMENT As part of the new chapel design, there is a votive candle wall of remembrance. We invite you to remember or pray for a loved one in a special way by lighting a candle in the St. Joseph Blessed Sacrament Chapel. These candles will be lit for a full year (except during Holy Week). A small plaque displaying the name of your loved one or your intention will be mounted below the candle. The annual offering for each candle is $300. Information on the votive candles and enrollment forms are available in the office during business hours. Our Junior High GYM Club will be having a meeting on Wednesday, August 29 at 6-8pm. Meeting is in the Youth Room. ST. JOSEPH NOVENA FOR THE DECEASED St. John Neumann offers Novenas throughout the year for your deceased loved ones. Suggested donation is $25 for (9) consecutive Monday evening Masses starting at 6pm. You will also receive a card commemorating when the Masses will be held. Please contact the Parish Office for more information. VISITING MARY The St. John Neumann image of our Blessed Mother can visit the home of a registered parishioner for one week. This image can be picked up on Saturday afternoon at 5pm and must be returned to the parish office by 4pm the following Saturday. The statue comes with prayers, songs, meditations and directions on how to pray the rosary, as well as some special intentions requested by our pastor. To schedule a visitation, please contact Merry Nera at ext. 207 or merry.nera@sjnc.org. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY Catechists and Assistants are needed for Grades 4 8 on Mondays, Tuesdays and/or Thursdays at the 4pm and/or 6pm sessions. Please contact Cathy Trawinski at ext. 210 or cathy.trawinski@sjnc.org for more information or if you would like to volunteer for this fulfilling ministry.
