Lectionary Based Scripture Study Join us for our next class on Thursday, September 27th at 8:45am. We will reflect on next Sunday s Gospel (Mark 9:38-43, 45, 47-48). Whoever is not against us is for us. Are you a fully initiated Catholic?...One that has received not only Baptism and First Eucharist, but also the sacrament of Confirmation. If the answer is NO, then RCIA is for you. If you or someone you know is considering becoming Catholic, come to a Thursday evening meeting at 6:45 pm and see what it is all about. 4 PARISH & COMMUNITY NEWS Our Ministry Fair is next weekend! We will be highlighting our various ministries and organizations that serve so purposefully. This week s SPOTLIGHT ON MINISTRY SJNC Men s Club: This is an organization open to men of the parish 21 years of age or older. It provides fellowship and also supports parish activities when called upon. Meetings are held on the 1st Wednesday of the month at 7pm. Outreach: Outreach helps individuals and families in need with a clothes closet and Food Pantry. Outreach is open Wednesdays at 9am-3pm. Gift Shop: Gift shop is open before and after every Mass and for special events. To volunteer to work in the gift shop contact the parish office. Helpers are also needed to unpack, store and inventory gift shop merchandise as needed. Office Volunteers: These helpers do a variety of clerical jobs such as reception, bulletin stuffing, filing and preparing bulk mailings. Page 4 - September 23, 2012

6 PARISH AND COMMUNITY NEWS VISITING MARY The St. John Neumann Visiting Mary can visit the home of a registered parishioner for one week. She can be picked up on Saturday afternoon at 3 pm and must be returned to the parish office by 12 pm the following Saturday. The statue comes with prayers, songs, meditations and directions on how to pray the rosary, as well as some special intentions requested by our administrator. God s Miracle In the Desert The Saint Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church family would like to invite you to help us celebrate our annual festival, God s Miracle In the Desert. All women 18 years and over are welcome to join us. Guardian Angel Cathedral Announcement: Ethics in the Marketplace is the title of the ministry of Jesuit, Fr. Max Oliva, who makes his home in the Vegas valley at St. Christopher s. Fr. Oliva is the presider for the 12:15 pm Mass at the Cathedral on the last Wednesday of each month. 7 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION On the Byzantine calendar, September 23 is the feast of the Conception of John the Baptist. The Roman and Byzantine calendars have in common the other equinox- or solsticederived dates of solemnities: December 25, March 25, and June 24. Scholars see strong evidence in the writings of the early Church Fathers for the fixing of these dates from the imagined anniversary of Gabriel s appearance to Zechariah at Yom Kippur, which was thought to have coincided with the equinox as a day of at-one-ment between light and darkness. The spiritual writer Origen held to this date. The annunciation to Zechariah then set the date six months later for Mary s conception of Jesus (March 25), and then, of course, for the dates of the births of John (June 24) and Jesus (December 25). Is this liturgical trivia? Perhaps. But it s also the best explanation we have for the dating of some of the most important festivals on our calendar. So even though the Roman Church doesn t observe the Conception of John the Baptist, yesterday s equinox can remind us of how our salvation history is closely attuned to God s creation. Jesus is completing his ministry in Galilee and beginning his journey to Jerusalem, where he will meet both death and resurrection. The prediction of his death placed here is the second of three in Mark s Gospel, and as usual it is the occasion for an important teaching on the part of Jesus. Today that lesson is tied to the need for his disciples to embrace a ministry of service. A play on words in Aramaic would have linked the words child and servant, thus turning Jesus gesture of placing a child in their midst into an illustration of his understanding of himself as the Servant of the Lord. It is that same awareness of the meaning of their ministry that Jesus (and Mark) wishes to instill in the disciples. Theirs must be a ministry of service if they are to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. And that service might even require of them that they be handed over to death. What would have been in the culture of Jesus day an ordinary discussion of social status ( who is the greatest ) becomes in Mark s context a key insight into the meaning of discipleship for the disciples and for us. Please call the parish office to sign up for a class and begin the process. Baptisms are celebrated during the Mass. Sacrament of Marriage Consult with the priest before you set the date. A minimum of six to eight months preparation is needed. Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick Call the parish office at any time if you or a family member seeks the Sacrament. If possible, please try to call before your loved one is in the active process of dying. Communion for the Sick or Homebound Contact the parish office during office hours. In case of hospitalization, inform the admissions office that you are a Catholic and would like to receive communion. Mass Intentions Scheduled in the parish office. The calendar fills up rapidly, so Mass intentions may have to be scheduled up to a year in advance. House Blessings Parishioners are encouraged to bless their own homes. Holy water and appropriate prayers are provided by the parish. Faith Formation Registration Registration began in April. Classes are held from September to May.
