3 Palm Sunday March 25, 2018 Page 3 Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. John Neumann, WE ENTER THIS HOLIEST OF WEEKS With this Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion, we enter into the most solemn week of the entire liturgical year! There s something special in the heart of anyone who makes a sincere effort to try to be present for the Sacred Triduum, or as much of it as possible. The three days of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday are considered not 3 separate liturgies, but one solemn liturgy spread over 3 days. Please see the insert in today s bulletin which gives a simple explanation of how we spend these holy days journeying with Christ through his suffering, death and resurrection. Fr. Lijo and I hope to see as many of you as possible throughout this Holy Week. LAST WEEK S LIVING STATIONS OF THE CROSS On Tuesday, March 27, 2018, at 6PM, the Chrism Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Pepe for the last time. At this special Mass, the priests who minister in the Diocese of Las Vegas renew their commitment to their priestly ministry and way of life. If you want to see a lot of priests gathered together with our bishop, the Chrism Mass is the place to be! At this Mass, the bishop also blesses the Holy Oils for the Sick, and for the Catechumens. The Sacred Chrism (used at baptisms, confirmations and ordinations) is consecrated near the end of the Mass. These oils are then distributed throughout all the parishes and missions of the diocese which shows a unity with our bishop when the sacraments celebrated with these oils are celebrated. Since this will be Bishop Pepe s last time to celebrate this Chrism Mass, it would be a great show of support for his ministry among us if St. John Neumann could have a substantial delegation present this coming Tuesday at our Guardian Angel Cathedral. I hope you ll join Fr. Lijo and me at Bishop Pepe s last Chrism Mass! PLEASE HELP US PRIESTS PREPARE FOR MASS On occasion someone may want to see the priest for some business or busy-ness as the priest is trying to prepare for Mass. Sometimes this happens as the priest is leaving the office toward the sacristy, or even sometimes when the priest is in the sacristy trying to get vested for Mass. Please help us priests prepare for Mass by making an appointment at a more appropriate time to ask your questions or raise your concerns. It would certainly be nice if we could keep Sundays holy for the Lord, and not for conducting business that should be attended to at a more appropriate time. It s difficult for a priest to enter into the celebration of the Mass carrying someone s question or concern that could have been addressed at a different time. I hope you ll understand and help us priests be more unburdened as we prepare for this awesome mystery we come to celebrate together! Thanks much for your cooperation! Peace always, Fr. James Michael Jankowski Pastor NORMS FOR FASTING AND ABSTAINING FROM MEAT Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Roman Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Roman Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. Those that are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill including individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting.

6 Palm Sunday March 25, 2018 Page 6 THE SACRED TRIDUUM OR THREE DAYS What we do at St. John Neumann from Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday Holy Thursday brings the end to Lent with the celebration of the Evening Mass of the Lord s Supper, which is actually the vigil of Good Friday. That night we begin the Triduum (pronounced TRID-ooum ) or Three Days that are the center of our entire year. Why are these Three Days so important? What do they mean for you? You are invited to make the Sacred Triduum different from all the rest of the days of the year. Whether you are young or old, currently active in our parish or not, please set these days aside. All of us should know that our presence for the liturgies of the Triduum is not just by invitation. We are all needed here! All of us need our whole community together during these most sacred days. THREE DAYS, BUT ONE CONTINUOUS LITURGY On these Three Days we gather a number of times to celebrate one complete liturgy. We begin with the sign of the cross on Holy Thursday and end with the dismissal at the end of the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night or on the Masses of Easter Sunday. Together we hear some of the church s most beautiful prayers and scriptures and we make some of our finest music. Please look closely at our schedule below and make plans to take part in the various liturgies of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. Above all, come on Saturday night for the Solemn Easter Vigil when we welcome the new members to our Catholic community! Remember, the Solemn Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night fulfills your Easter Sunday obligation! WE BEGIN ON HOLY THURSDAY HOLY THURSDAY March 29, 2018 Evening Mass of the Lord s Supper... 7:00 PM Adoration... until Midnight Prayer Lent officially ends as the Sacred Triduum begins on Holy Thursday with the Evening Mass of the Lord s Supper. On this Thursday evening, which is actually the vigil of Good Friday, we enter into this Sacred Triduum together. After listening to the scriptures, we do something strange: We wash feet. In our name and as our example, our Presider goes down on his knees and washes the feet of several parishioners. Jesus gave us this image of what the church is supposed to look like, feel like, act like. This is rehearsal for all of Christian life.
7 Palm Sunday March 25, 2018 Page 7 Afterward, we celebrate the Eucharist, which is the ultimate gift of Christ s real presence sustaining us on our earthly journeys. The evening liturgy has no ending. We process with the Blessed Sacrament to the altar of repose. Whether we stay to pray awhile or leave, we have now entered in the quiet and peace and glory of the Sacred Triduum. WE CONTINUE THROUGH GOOD FRIDAY GOOD FRIDAY March 30, 2018 Liturgy of the Lord s Passion (with Communion)... 12:00 PM Stations of the Cross (without Communion)... 3:00 PM Tenebrae Service (without Communion)... 7:00 PM We gather quietly at 12:00 Noon on Good Friday for the Liturgy of the Lord s Passion. We listen to scripture. We pray at length for all the world s needs. Then there is another once-a-year event: The holy cross is held up in our midst and we adore as a faith community. Then we receive our Lord in the Eucharist to sustain us until the Solemn Easter Vigil. When the service is ended we invite individuals to come forward one by one to reverence the cross on which our savior died. This service is the official continuation of the one Sacred Triduum. In addition, at mid-afternoon, the traditional hour of the great sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, some may choose to journey with Christ by praying the traditional Stations of the Cross. A Tenebrae Service is another additional time of prayer offered in the evening. While not an official part of the Sacred Triduum liturgies and without Holy Communion, this service symbolizes what appears to be the temporary triumph of the Prince of Darkness over the Light of the World as we pray with various characters of scripture. The service ends in darkness and with a loud noise made by everyone symbolizing the death of Jesus. At the end, a small amount of light appears as we leave in silence and await the glorious resurrection of Christ....UNTIL THE NIGHT OF HOLY SATURDAY AND EASTER SUNDAY! HOLY SATURDAY March 31, 2018 Traditional blessing of Easter foods in the Courtyard...11:00 AM Solemn Easter Vigil (fulfills your Easter Sunday obligation)... 7:30 PM EASTER SUNDAY April 1, 2018 Masses... 6:00 AM*, 7:30 AM*, 10:00 AM, 12:30 PM* & 5:00 PM * Denotes change in regular Sunday Mass times. Hungry and excited, the church gathers in the darkness and lights a new fire and a great candle that will make this night bright for us. We listen to some of the most powerful scriptures of the Bible, then we pray to all our saints to stand with us as we go to the font and bless the waters. At these waters our catechumens are initiated into our community, confirmed in the Holy Spirit and nourished by the Eucharist. Others join them in becoming members of our church or in completing their own initiation through Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. Together as one community we go to the table and celebrate the Easter Eucharist. Easter Sunday begins and we are ready for Fifty Days of rejoicing!

9 Palm Sunday March 25, 2018 Page 9 Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, As we journeyed through the Season of Lent, our thoughts may have turned to places of the Holy Land where our Lord lived, in the Holy Land often does not match the scenes of our imagination. the ministries of the Franciscan friars entrusted with its care. For almost 800 years, the Franciscans have cared for the principal shrines of our Christian faith. The work of the friars also includes the care of refugees and those marginalized people throughout the region and the preservation of the Holy Land s missions and schools. These schools and parishes are signs of present, as well as future, peace and hope. The Collection for the Holy Land, in the words of Paul VI is "not only for the Holy Places but above all for those pastoral, charitable, educational, and social works which the Church supports in the Holy Land for the welfare of their Christian brethren and of the local Holy Land Franciscans staff and maintain the Holy places and shrines. This enables those who live in the Holy Land and those who visit to deepen their faith and their spiritual and cultural connection to Salvation history. In order to assist Christians to remain in the Holy Land, including the poor and young couples, the Custody builds thousands of residential units. Additionally, they build senior care facilities. Medical assistance is provided for the needy. The Franciscans operate and support schools open to all, regardless of religion or nationality. They provide scholarships for students to prepare them to get jobs and remain in the Holy Land as part of living Catholic communities. Funds are distributed to young men studying to become Franciscan priests or brothers. Finally, Franciscan archaeologists pursue ongoing research at the Holy Places discovering historical artifacts. The Franciscan Media Center tells the story of the Holy Land through multimedia distributed throughout the world in more than seven languages. The friars organize Liturgical Celebrations for the local Christians and Pilgrims and share with other Christian communities in the Holy Land in ongoing Ecumenical cooperation. Please be as generous as your abundance allows. Donating to the Good Friday Annual Collection allows the living stones to inhabit the Holy Places, provides indispensable support to the Franciscan Custody and their mission, but in doing so, bears witness to the Resurrection of Christ. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend erend Joseph A. Pepe, D.D., J.C.D. Bishop of Las Vegas AROUND THE DIOCESE "SALUBONG" AT ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI St. Francis of Assisi Parish invites all to celebrate Salubong! Salubong (Tagalog for meeting ) is a traditional Filipino devotion that reenacts the encounter of the risen Christ with his mother. In communities in the Philippines, on the morning of Easter Sunday, the faithful carry statues of the risen Christ and of the Blessed Mother through town in two separate processions. The men of the community, in a procession of joyful celebration, accompany the statue of Christ; the women of the community, in a somber procession of mourning, accompany the image of the sorrowful mother, shrouded in a black mourning veil. They arrive at a designated meeting place, usually in front of a church, where a little girl dressed as an angel removes the black mourning veil from the statue of Mary. This devotion is celebrated in many parishes in the United States that serve the Filipino community. Join us on Easter morning, April 1st. The procession starts at 5:15 a.m. so try to be here at 4:45 a.m. We look forward to seeing you for this first Salubong procession in the Valley.
