3 Holy Week & Easter Schedule Holy Thursday Solemn Mass of the Lords Supper Night Prayer 10:30pm Good Friday Stations of the Cross 12:00 Noon Liturgy of the Passion 3:00pm Tenebrae 7:30pm Holy Saturday Blessing of the Easter Food 11:30 Easter Vigil 8:30pm Easter 7:00am, 8:30am, 10:15am & 12:15pm T Blessing of Easter Food Holy Saturday - 11:30 am his ancient tradition is popular among the Slavic, Ukrainian, Polish and Italian cultures. The blessed food is shared at the Easter table. Baskets are usually decorated with white or embroidered linen as well as flowers or sprigs of greens. This is a wonderful custom to initiate in your household. Children are also welcome to bring their Easter Baskets for a special blessing. Here is a sampling of what you might find in a typical basket, and its symbolism: Bread - Jesus, the Bread of Life; Butter - God s goodness; Eggs - new life and Christ s Resurrection; Horseradish - the Passion of Christ; Salt and pepper - You are salt of the earth; Sausage, ham or other meat - generosity; Pastries - the sweetness of God s love; Wine - the richness and blessings of life; Lamb mold of butter, sugar or cake - representing Jesus as the Lamb of God. ext week we celebrate one of the great liturgical N dichotomies. We begin the liturgy with a procession of celebration, and we continue to the reading of the Passion, which reaches its zenith with the Lord calling out, Father, into your hands I commend my spirit ; and when he had said this he breathed his last. It is as if we move from joy and celebration to utter defeat and emptiness. However, that is the essence of our entire Lenten journey, and our beginning of Holy Week. One of the most important aspects of discipleship is gaining a deeper understanding of our Faith, and the details relating to what we do and why we do it. Throughout Lent we have been striving to deepen our relationship with the one we proclaim as our Lord and Savior. Nevertheless, when it comes right down to it, we may resist His invitation to us because it can mean pain, sacrifice, and suffering. That is why we must experience Lent. That is why we must experience His Passion. And that is why, on Easter, we will experience rising with the Lord in triumph, joy, and celebration! Truly, Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. At St. John the Beloved, we always invite our members to be conscious of what we are celebrating in our Liturgical Feasts and to wear appropriate clothing. So please plan to wear RED for and Good Friday. It truly makes a difference in the entire liturgical environment! Soup and Stations Fridays during Lent Soup at 6pm - Stations at 7pm ince the earliest days of the Church, S pilgrims have walked the streets of Jerusalem in the footsteps of Christ on his way to Calvary. Some of these events are noted in the Gospel accounts and some founded in ancient tradition. Since most people could not travel to that Holy City in person, customs developed of bringing Jerusalem to the local church! Everyone is also invited to enjoy bread and homemade soup at Madden Hall beginning at 6 pm. Soup and Stations will be hosted as follows: March 23rd - Women's Club

To affirm that forgiveness, St. Paul has this to say in the Second Reading: He (Jesus) became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him. There is a connection between these two statements which present forgiveness as the way to salvation. The Lenten season is one of penance, reflection, prayer, almsgiving, and fasting, so we can better prepare ourselves for Easter and beyond. Lent reminds us that God is gracious and merciful. God s divine mercy is a central theme of Lent. One might say that the priceless gift of God s mercy is highlighted and celebrated in the Church in the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession). That should be a key part of our Lenten journey. only two weeks remain on that journey, so getting to confession is important if we have not done so already. As noted elsewhere in the bulletin, we are offering additional times for confession during the next two weeks.
