Stewardship is determined by: 1) Being properly registered and active for at least three months; 2) Faithful participation at Sunday liturgies; 3) Regular and identifiable support of the parish; These criteria are used to verify parishioner status for: sponsorship; participation in sacramental, educational, pastoral and social ministries, activities and enrichment programs; and use of facilities and services. PARISH SERVICES SVdP ~ The direct Helpline Number for St. Vincent de Paul Society is Baptism ~ The next parental prep session will be held at 6:30 pm, Wednesday, May 10th, in the Church Commons. After attending this session, Baptisms may be scheduled during a daily or weekend Mass (outside of Advent & Lent), as well as at 11 am or 7 pm on Saturday, or 1pm on Sunday. Please register for the session by contacting the parish office. Godparents and grandparents are also welcome. Miraculous Medal Novena ~ Mondays at 9:45am. Rosary ~ in the Chapel at 9:45 on Friday. Anointing of the Sick and Pastoral Visitation ~ To arrange for a priest, deacon or lay minister to visit a loved one who is sick, homebound, or hospitalized, please contact the parish office. Because of HIPAA policies, a hospital cannot notify the church, so a family member must take the initiative. Anointing is also offered following Mass. An immediate response is not always possible, so don t wait until a crisis occurs! Cancer Support Group ~ Meets first Friday of each month at 9:30 am. Sessions are open to all. Contact Sister Carol. 3 World Day of Prayer for Vocations May 7, 2017 The World Day of Prayer for Vocations serves to publically fulfill the Lord's instruction to, "Pray to the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into His harvest" (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). As a climax to a prayer that is continually offered throughout the Church, it affirms the primacy of faith and grace in all that concerns vocations to the priesthood and to the consecrated life. While appreciating all vocations, the Church concentrates its attention this day on vocations to the ordained ministries, to the Religious life in all its forms, to societies of apostolic life, to secular institutes in their diversity of services and membership, and to the missionary life, in the particular sense of mission "ad gentes" marks the 54th Anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Vocations Concert Series TODAY! Voices of Deliverance is a Charleston-based a cappella vocal group, specializing in Spirituals, but with a wide repertoire containing other styles as well. They have done a number of high profile weddings and events for elite clients. They have performed extensively along the East Coast and as far away as Italy. 4 Easter Season Bible Study Thursdays beginning May 4th As we celebrate the glory of our triumphant resurrected Savior, Jesus Christ let us not forget the preparations that we took leading up to His passion and death during Lent. The extra prayer, the fasting and the almsgiving. These were triumphs of ours! Let us also recall that in the midst of these next 50 days that Jesus IS now with us again! Though it is a busy time and a celebration is called for we must not allow it to overshadow His resurrection message to us. In His words are peace, power and promise! Join us as we listen to Him and become truly enlightened by His divine wisdom Thursdays at 10:00am and in Madden Hall where we will marvel in His presence, be reassured by Him and we will be challenged. We will walk with Him, sit and dine with Him and we can say to Him as Peter did, Lord, You know everything...you know that I love You! Catholic Men s Fellowship An invitation to the men of St John. We have a wonderful vibrant parish at St. John and if you are looking for a way to share, validate and build your faith in Christ consider joining one of the fellowship groups that gather on the parish campus. Our small, intimate gatherings have come to be a great resource for me and others to exercise our faith in free-flowing, male point-ofview discussions about how to be a Catholic man in today s world. Two separate groups meet on Tuesdays at and Saturdays 7:30am, during the 1st and 3rd weeks of the month. The meetings are an hour long and no meetings are mandatory. Cost of materials is $10.00 and there are no dues or fees. This is a great way to carry your Lenten intentions forward as you walk with others who are traveling the same path, just trying to live in this world in a way that more closely mirrors the life of Christ! Typical activities may include help with social and reminiscing activities, assisting club members during the day, or sharing particular talents like music, singing, dancing, or exercise. The ARK is in URGENT need of volunteers on Tuesday(s) and Thursday(s) of each week from 9:30 AM - 2:00 PM. Our Respite Program volunteers receive thorough and ongoing training. 5 Faith Formation Registration We have some great things happening in Faith Formation in Academic Year! Faith Formation sessions will be moved to the St. John the Beloved campus, giving us regular use of our sacred space the church. We plan to gather each week in the church for group prayer, music and lesson. Then we will break into smaller groups to look deeper in our Catholic faith. K-5 th Graders will meet on Tuesday Evenings Session Times: 4:15-5:30 pm and 6:00-7:15 pm 6-12 th Graders will meet on Sunday Evenings Session Times: 5:30-7:00 pm Registration for Early Childhood-12th Grade is now available online along with the tentative Faith Formation calendar. Please visit: Evening Tour of the Church The Welcome Committee is offering a church tour on Wednesday, May 10th at 6:15 pm. All parishioners are welcome, especially those new to the parish. We will meet in the Commons area, just inside entrance by the bell tower. The tour takes about 30 minutes, is a good opportunity to meet other parishioners and learn about history, nooks and crannies, and accouterments of the church building. No need to sign up. Brovey will be leading a pilgrimage to Rome on February 26 March 9, 2018 visiting Assisi, Florence, Orvieto and 5 days in Rome. The pilgrimage begins in the peaceful hillside town of St. Francis and St. Clare before continuing on to the Renaissance city of Florence. On the way to Rome we will stop in the town of Orvieto where the tradition of the Corpus Christi Eucharistic Processions began. While in Rome we will visit St. Peter s Basilica, St. John Lateran, St. Paul Outside the- Wall, St. Mary Major, the Holy Stairs, St. Clemente, St. Maria in Trastevere, St. Cecilia, the Gesu, the catacombs to name just a few. We will also attend a Papal Audience with Pope Francis and Scavi Tour (a tour beneath St. Peter s to the very tomb of the Prince of the Apostles) and much more. Scripture Reflection S hepherds and sheep were so much a part of life for Jesus and those from Galilee. Galilee was, after all, largely a rural area and raising sheep and sheepherding was an intricate part of their lives. That is why the image of a shepherd with his sheep was so often used during biblical times. It was a connection with which people could identify. It is equally important for us today to understand this important cultural connection for them. Shepherding was all about feeding the lambs and the sheep (recall that Jesus tells Peter Feed my sheep. ), bringing them to good pasture lands and water ( The Lord is my shepherd He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside quiet waters; he restores my soul. ); going after lost lambs ( Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? ); and protects the sheep in the field and the fold ( The watchman opens the gate, and the sheep listen to his voice. ). Our Gospel reading today comes from St. John 10: In St. John 10: 11, the next verse, Christ declares I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep. As Catholics and Christians, we, too, are called to be Good Shepherds to all those with whom we come in contact. It may be from another culture than ours, but we should understand full well the implications of that.
