3 Divine Mercy D uring the course of Jesus' revelations to Sister Faustina on the Divine Mercy He asked on numerous occasions that a feast day be dedicated to the Divine Mercy and that this feast be celebrated on the Sunday after Easter. The liturgical texts of that day, the 2nd Sunday of Easter, concern the institution of the Sacrament of Penance, The Tribunal of the Divine Mercy, and are thus uniquely suited to the request of Our Lord. This Feast, which had already been granted to the nation of Poland and been celebrated within Vatican City, was granted to the Universal Church by Pope John Paul II on the occasion of the canonization of Sr. Faustina on 30 April The Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments stated that "throughout the world the Second Sunday of Easter will receive the name Divine Mercy Sunday, a perennial invitation to the Christian world to face, with confidence in divine benevolence, the difficulties and trials that humanity will experience in the years to come." These papal acts represent the highest endorsement that the Church can give to a private revelation, proclaiming the certain sanctity of the mystic, and the granting of a universal feast, as requested by Our Lord to St. Faustina. Divine Mercy Devotions will be held in our church Today at 3pm. O Lord, You who are everlasting mercy, give me a tender heart today towards those to whom the morning light brings less joy than it brings to me: those in whom the pulse of life grows weak; those who must lie in bed through all the sunny hours; the blind, who are shut off from the light of day; the overworked, who have no joy of leisure; the unemployed who have no joy of work; the bereaved, whose hearts and homes are desolate. Dear Lord, grant Your mercy on them all, now and forever. Amen. Congratulations! We welcome those that through Baptism, Communion and Confirmation, became part of the Catholic Church at our Easter Vigil. 4 Easter Season Bible Study I have seen the Lord! This is Mary Magdalene s joyful declaration to the disciples on the very first Easter morning. At Jesus first appearance after His glorious resurrection she did not recognize Him but upon hearing her name on His lips she came to know that He is alive! He is still alive and YOUR name is on His lips. Have you seen Him? We see Him through eyes of faith! Come, build your faith and hear Him speak to you in The Words of the Risen Christ by Rich Cleveland. This 8 session study focused on Jesus interaction with His disciples after His passion, death and resurrection. The study will be on Thursdays at 10:00am and beginning on May 4th. All are welcome. The cost of materials is $ For more information, or to register, please Brianriggle714@gmail.com Women s Club The next meeting of the SJB Women s Club will be held on Monday, May 1st at 7:00 PM in Madden Hall. Please plan to stop by that weekend and support our sale. Every penny we make goes right back into our many ministries that serve our parish and Summerville community. Catholic Men s Fellowship An invitation to the men of St John. We have a wonderful vibrant parish at St. John and if you are looking for a way to share, validate and build your faith in Christ consider joining one of the fellowship groups that gather on the parish campus. Our small, intimate gatherings have come to be a great resource for me and others to exercise our faith in free-flowing, male point-ofview discussions about how to be a Catholic man in today s world. Two separate groups meet on Tuesdays at and Saturdays 7:30am, during the 1st and 3rd weeks of the month. The meetings are an hour long and no meetings are mandatory. Cost of materials is $10.00 and there are no dues or fees. This is a great way to carry your Lenten intentions forward as you walk with others who are traveling the same path, just trying to live in this world in a way that more closely mirrors the life of Christ! Scripture Reflection ur First Reading from the Acts of the O Apostles presents us with a glimpse of the early Church, the early Christian community. This passage is often misunderstood in some ways. When it speaks of communal life, that term is based upon a brief translation of a Greek word which means much more than what it might seem. The Greek word is Koinonia (κοινωνία), which is a broad term meaning association, communion, fellowship, and joint participation. It means to share in something. This is an excellent example of stewardship which has meaning for us today. Our parish is a community, one in which we are all called to share and to participate. Koinonia identifies an almost ideal state of fellowship and unity which should exist in the Church, the Body of Christ. It should be more than just attending Mass. When we speak of stewardship, we understand that it means much more than placing something in the collection basket. It means that we share all of our gifts, our time and talent also, with the community and others in need. It will be difficult for us to ever match the sense of association and the joy of that early Church, but it is a model for us to which we as a faith community should aspire. To be community and to be in communion with one another and with God requires active participation, not passivity. Father Thomas Merton O.C.S.O. once wrote: The deepest level of communication is not communication, but communion beyond speech beyond concept.
