Rosary ~ in the Chapel at 9:45 on Friday. 0 Anointing of the Sick and Pastoral Visitation ~ To arrange for a priest, deacon or lay minister to visit a loved one who is sick, homebound, or hospitalized, please contact the parish office. Because of HIPAA policies, a hospital cannot notify the church, so a family member must take the initiative. Anointing is also offered following Mass. An immediate response is not always possible, so don t wait until a crisis occurs! Cancer Support Group ~ Meets first Friday of each month at 9:30 am. Sessions are open to all. Contact Sister Carol. 3 Feast of Corpus Christi his weekend, we celebrate the T feast of the Holy Eucharist. It is a chance for us to Give Thanks for the enduring presence of Christ who promised to be with us in both our communion with God and our communion with one another. Jesus instituted this Sacrament at the Last Supper, the night before he died. On Holy Thursday, we celebrated the Eucharist in context of the Sacred Triduum in preparation for Easter. Now that the Easter season is complete, the feast of Corpus Christi enables us to focus specifically on the action and presence of Christ in and through this Sacrament. here is an interesting connection between the T Evening Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday and today s feast of Corpus Christi. This liturgical connection is found in the custom of procession. The purpose and the mood of the two processions are strikingly different. Holy Thursday s Mass concludes with a procession in which we symbolically walk with Jesus to the Mount of Olives, to keep watch with him on the night of his betrayal. The Blessed Sacrament is carried in a covered ciborium. Christ s glory, in a sense, is veiled as he undergoes his Passion. On the solemnity of Corpus Christi, we walk in the afterglow of the Easter season, in company with the risen Lord. This time, the Blessed Sacrament is clearly revealed in a monstrance: the Lord s glory is not hidden, but visible to all! oday s solemnity is an expression of our faith in T the enduring presence of Christ in the Blessed Eucharist. This celebration is also outward-looking, carrying the liturgy out of the church and into the streets. St. Francis of Assisi clearly understood this aspect of Eucharist as he found Christ in the hearts of the poor and disenfranchised, those who felt abandoned by family, friends, the Church and society. Pope Francis leads us along a similar path today. O Corpus Christi Prayer Lord, You have given us this Sacred Banquet, in which Christ is received, the memory of His Passion is renewed, the mind is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given to us. You have given them bread from Heaven Having all sweetness within. God our Father, for Your glory and our salvation You appointed Jesus Christ eternal High Priest. May the people He gained for You by His Blood come to share in the power of His Cross and Resurrection by celebrating His Memorial in this Eucharist, for He lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever. Amen. Feast of Sts. Peter & Paul ext weekend, the Church celebrates the Feast of Sts. Peter N & Paul. Peter, named Simon, was a fisherman of Galilee and was introduced to Jesus by his brother Andrew, also a fisherman. Jesus gave him the name Cephas (Petrus in Latin), which means Rock, because he was to become the rock upon which Christ would build His Church. eter was a bold follower of the P Lord. He was the first to recognize that Jesus was the Messiah, the Son of the living God, and eagerly pledged his fidelity until death. In his boldness, he also made many mistakes, however, such as losing faith when walking on water with Christ and betraying Jesus on the night of His passion. Yet despite his human weakness, Jesus chose Peter to shepherd his precious flock. After the Resurrection and Ascension of Christ, the Acts of the Apostles clearly illustrates his unique role as head of the Church. Peter led the Apostles as the first Pope and ensured that the disciples kept the true faith. Peter spent his last years in Rome, leading the Church through persecution and eventually being martyred in the year 64. He was crucified upside-down at his own request, because he claimed he was not worthy to die as his Lord. He was buried on Vatican hill, and St. Peter's Basilica is built over his tomb. aul was the Apostle to the Gentiles. His letters P are included in the writings of the New Testament, and through them we learn much about his life and the faith of the early Church. Before receiving the name Paul, he was Saul, a Jewish Pharisee, who zealously persecuted Christians in Jerusalem. Scripture records that Saul was present at the martyrdom of St. Stephen. Saul's conversion took place as he was on his way to Damascus to persecute the Christian community. As he was traveling along the road, he was suddenly surrounded by a great light from heaven. He was blinded and fell off his horse. He then heard a voice saying to him, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? He answered: Who are you? Then he heard the voice announce: I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. Saul came to the Faith in that incident and continued to Damascus, where he was baptized and his sight was restored. He took the name Paul and spent the remainder of his life preaching the Gospel tirelessly to the Gentiles of the Mediterranean world. Paul was imprisoned and taken to Rome, where he was beheaded in the year 67. He is buried in Rome in the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. In the year 395, St. Augustine of Hippo said of Sts. Peter and Paul: Both apostles share the same feast day, for these two were one; and even though they suffered on different days, they were as one. Peter went first, and Paul followed. And so we celebrate this day made holy for us by the apostles' blood. Let us embrace what they believed, their life, their labors, their sufferings, their preaching, and their confession of faith.

T he Diocese of Charleston has formed the St. Thomas Aquinas Scholarship Funding Organization (SFO). Donations made to the St Thomas Aquinas SFO will be used for scholarships to exceptional needs students who are attending our Catholic elementary and secondary schools. Summerville Catholic School is one of the qualified schools. Two families with children enrolled at Summerville Catholic have received scholarships from the St. Thomas Aquinas SFO for the school year. There is a special tax benefit available from the State of South Carolina for donations made to a qualifying SFO. Contributions made on or before June 30, 2014 may qualify for a credit of up to 60% of the taxpayer s total SC tax liability. South Carolina has set aside a total of $8 million for the tax credits and is approving donations on a first come first served basis. Application for Exceptional Needs Children Scholarship Credit form SC SCH.TC-57A should be completed and sent to the Department of Revenue as soon as possible to qualify for the tax credit. The form and instructions are available from the Diocese of Charleston. For those interested in supporting Catholic education, this a wonderful opportunity to provide funding for scholarships for children that attend our Catholic schools. MSENIOR LUNCHEON Wednesday, July 2nd, 12:00 PM Sign up in Church Commons Magnolia Cemetery Presentation Thursday, June 26th, 7:00 pm Madden Hall All History Buffs are invited to an interesting presentation on the glorious Magnolia Cemetery given by Patrick Harwood, a parishioner and professor at the College of Charleston. This cemetery has many interesting aspects and elements including the "who's who" of Charleston History interred there and massive artistic monuments and memorials representative of America's 19th century Victorian movement. Christian symbolism permeates the 150 acre and this place is truly a treasure of history, mystery and artistry. Patrick will also sign and sell copies of his new book on this subject. HYMNAL MEMORIALS Many of our old worship hymnals have a nameplate on the front cover indicating a dedication by the donor. These books were replaced because they did not contain the translations of the new Mass Commons or the scripture readings. We now use the Breaking Bread edition. We offered the old hymnals to parishioners at the time of exchange, but there are still a few left. They are alpha-sorted on a table in Madden Hall and available for pickup today after Mass. Last chance! CHARLESTON PORT AND SEAFARERS SOCIETY This society is an ecumenical non-profit ministry dedicated to assisting the thousands of seaman who visit the Port of Charleston each year. Most of the crew on cargo vessels are from very poor countries. They receive an average salary of $600 to $800 per month and have a signed contract which binds them to a ship for 8 months or more. This means they will not see their families for nearly a year. The mission of Charleston Port and Seafarers Society is to assist these seamen while in port. Since containerships are only docked for a few hours the crew has little time to go shopping for personal needs. Seafarers operates centers at the Wando, Columbus Street and North Charleston Terminals. Due to Homeland Security and personal safety regulations, the seamen can t walk through the terminal to an exit gate. Each of our centers is conveniently located near the water s edge. This allows the seamen to walk from their ship to our center where they can use computers to communicate with loved ones via Skype, Facebook and . We also offer them international calling cards and land lines. In addition we provide free transportation for properly documented folks to shop at local stores. The recently opened center at North Charleston is in need of volunteers to staff it during the day. Volunteers usually work 4 hour shifts that are tailored to availability. Chaplain Len Williams will visit St. John the Beloved in a few weeks to explain more about the Charleston Port and Seafarers Society. In the meantime, please give some thought to your own interest in this rewarding ministry.
