PARISH SERVICES SVdP ~ The direct Helpline Number for St. Vincent de Paul Society is Baptism ~ The next parental prep session will be held at 6:30 pm, Wednesday, April 11th in the Church Commons. After attending this session, Baptisms may be scheduled during a daily or weekend Mass (outside of Advent & Lent), as well as at 11 am or 7 pm on, or 1pm on. Please register for the session by contacting the parish office. Godparents and grandparents are also welcome. Miraculous Medal Novena ~ Mondays at 9:45am. Rosary ~ in the Chapel at 9:45 on Friday. Anointing of the Sick and Pastoral Visitation ~ Please contact the parish office. HIPAA policy will not allow a hospital to notify the church, so a family member must take the initiative. Anointing is also offered following Mass. An immediate response is not always possible, so please don t wait until a crisis occurs! Children's Liturgy of the Word ~ celebrated during the 9:30 & 11:30 Mass each for youngsters in Kindergarten through Grade 4. Nursery ~ A Nursery is offered for children 1-3 years old in Madden Hall during the 9:30 & 11:30 Masses. 3 An Easter Meditation THE SON A wealthy man and his son loved to collect rare works of art. They had everything in their collection, from Picasso to Raphael. They would often sit together and admire the great works of art. When the Vietnam conflict broke out, the son went to war. He was very courageous and died in battle while rescuing another soldier. The father was notified and grieved deeply for his only son. About a month later, just before Christmas, there was a knock at the door. A young man stood at the door with a large package in his hands. He said, Sir, you don t know me, but I am the soldier for whom your son gave his life. He saved many lives that day, and he was carrying me to safety when a bullet struck him in the heart and he died instantly. He often talked about you, and your love for art. The young man held out his package. I know this isn t much. I m not really a great artist, but I think your son would have wanted you to have this. The father opened the package. It was a portrait of his son, painted by the young man. He marveled at the way the soldier had captured the personality of his son in the painting. The father was so drawn to the eyes that his own eyes welled up with tears. He thanked the young man and offered to pay him for the picture. Oh, no sir, I could never repay what your son did for me. It s a gift. The father hung the portrait over his mantle. Every time visitors came to his home he took them to see the portrait of his son before he showed them any of the other great works he had collected. The man died a few months later. There was to be an auction of his paintings. Many influential people gathered, excited over seeing the great paintings and having an opportunity to purchase one for their collection. On the platform sat the painting of the son. The auctioneer pounded his gavel. We will start the bidding with this picture of the son. Who will bid for this picture? There was silence. A voice in the back of the room shouted, We want to see the famous paintings. Skip this one. But the auctioneer persisted. Will someone bid for this painting? Who will start the bidding? $100, $200? Another voice shouted angrily. We didn t come to see this painting. We came to see the Van Goghs, the Rembrandts. Get on with the real bids! But the auctioneer continued, The son! The son! Who ll take the son? Finally, a voice came from the very back of the room. It was the longtime gardener of the man and his son. I ll give $10 for the painting. Being a poor man, it was all he could afford. We have $10, who will bid $20? Give it to him for $10. Let s see the masters, the people shouted. $10 is the bid, won t someone bid $20? The crowed was becoming angry. They didn t want the picture of the son. They wanted the more worthy investments for their collections. The auctioneer pounded the gavel. Going once, twice, SOLD for $10! A man sitting in the second row shouted, Now let s get on with the collection. The auctioneer laid down his gavel and said: I m sorry, the auction is over. What about the paintings? I am sorry. When I was called to conduct this auction, I was told of a secret stipulation in the will. I was not allowed to reveal that stipulation until this time. Only the painting of the son would be auctioned. Whoever bought that painting would inherit the entire estate, including all the paintings. The one who took the son gets everything! God gave His son 2,000 years ago to die on a cruel cross. Much like the auctioneer, His message today is: The son! The son! Who ll take the son? Because, you see, whoever takes the Son gets everything! Happy Easter!

4 Divine Mercy D uring the course of Jesus' revelations to Sister Faustina on the Divine Mercy He asked on numerous occasions that a feast day be dedicated to the Divine Mercy and that this feast be celebrated on the after Easter. The liturgical texts of that day, the 2nd of Easter, concern the institution of the Sacrament of Penance, The Tribunal of the Divine Mercy, and are thus uniquely suited to the request of Our Lord. This Feast, which had already been granted to the nation of Poland and been celebrated within Vatican City, was granted to the Universal Church by Pope John Paul II on the occasion of the canonization of Sr. Faustina on 30 April The Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments stated that "throughout the world the Second of Easter will receive the name Divine Mercy, a perennial invitation to the Christian world to face, with confidence in divine benevolence, the difficulties and trials that humanity will experience in the years to come." These papal acts represent the highest endorsement that the Church can give to a private revelation, proclaiming the certain sanctity of the mystic, and the granting of a universal feast, as requested by Our Lord to St. Faustina. Divine Mercy Devotions will be held in our church next, April 8th, at 2:00pm. O Lord, You who are everlasting mercy, give me a tender heart today towards those to whom the morning light brings less joy than it brings to me: those in whom the pulse of life grows weak; those who must lie in bed through all the sunny hours; the blind, who are shut off from the light of day; the overworked, who have no joy of leisure; the unemployed who have no joy of work; the bereaved, whose hearts and homes are desolate. Dear Lord, grant Your mercy on them all, now and forever. Amen. 5 SJB Concert Series, April 8th at 4:00pm Canadian pianist, Brad Parker, has performed extensively as a soloist and collaborative pianist, in the United States, Canada, France, Italy, and Haiti. In the first year of his residency in Charleston, South Carolina, he performed with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, the Charleston Wind Symphony, the Charleston Men s Chorus, as well as performing a recital in the Emily Remington Concert Series and the Piccolo Spoleto Festival. In truth Easter is all about rejoicing. It is the day of Resurrection which provides hope to all of us. Throughout our diocese thousands of people are at Mass today who may not normally attend. Recent studies have shown that as many as 40 percent of those who do not regularly attend may not have been at Mass since Christmas! That is another reason for us to rejoice and say Welcome home. We miss you and we love you. Christ s love for us is at the foundation of our celebration today. St. Augustine once wrote, God loves each of us as if there were only one of us. We ask God s blessings on all those who have passed our amazing religion to you. Clearly you do remember your devotion and are here to honor it. Our Catholic Church considers today to be the holiest day of the year. For us as Catholics this celebrates one of the greatest days in history when Jesus, the Son of God, defeated death and rose from the grave giving us all hope for eternal life. St. Pope John Paul II may have put it best several years ago when he proclaimed, Do not abandon yourselves to despair. We are the Easter people and hallelujah is our song.
