Stewardship is determined by: 1.) Being properly registered and active for at least three months; 2.) Faithful participation at weekly liturgies; 3.) Regular and identifiable support of the parish; 4.) Involvement in at least one parish ministry, program, activity or organization. These criteria are used to verify parishioner status for: sponsorship; parochial schools; participation in sacramental, educational, pastoral and social ministries, activities and enrichment programs; and use of facilities and services. Baptism ~ The next parental prep session will be held at 6:30 pm, Wednesday, October 9th, in the Church Commons. After attending this session, Baptisms may be scheduled during a daily or weekend Mass, as well as outside of Mass at 11am or 7pm on Saturday, or 1pm on Sunday. Please register for the session by contacting the parish office. Godparents and grandparents are also welcome. Avoid the need for a babysitter, plan to attend while still pregnant! Marriage ~ Engaged couples should contact Deacon Jim Walter at deaconjim@sjbsummerville.org to set an appointment to begin the process of preparation at least six months prior to the date of marriage. Miraculous Medal Novena ~ Mondays at 9:45am. Rosary ~ Fridays at 9:45 am in Our Lady s Chapel. 0 Anointing of the Sick and Pastoral Visitation ~ To arrange for a priest, deacon or lay minister to visit a loved one who is sick, homebound, or hospitalized, please contact the parish office. Because of HIPAA policies, a hospital cannot notify the church, so a family member must take the initiative. Anointing is also offered following Mass. Because of the priest shortage, an immediate response is not always possible, so don t wait until a crisis! Cancer Support Group ~ The cancer support group meets the first Friday of each month at 9:30 am. Sessions are open to all. Contact Sister Carol. RCIA Inquiry ~ Session will meet on Monday, October 7, at 7:00pm in the Church Commons. Anyone who has questions about the Catholic Church is welcome to attend. Contact Sr. Carol for details. Children's Liturgy of the Word ~ celebrated during the 9:30 Mass each Sunday for youngsters in Kindergarten through Grade 4. Nursery ~ A Nursery offered for children 1-3 years of age in Madden Hall during the 9:30 & 11:30 Masses. Early Childhood Care ~ offered for children 3-5 years of age in Madden Hall during the 9:30 & 11:30 Masses. Meals on Wheels ~ Delivers between 11:15am 12:30pm. Call Leslie at to volunteer. Centering Prayer Group ~ Everyone is welcome to deepen their spiritual prayer life by joining this group on the first Saturday of each month from 10am Noon in Madden Hall. Outreach for the Hungry needs non-perishable items. Please do not bring food items that are outdated. Each month we have to discard them because they cannot be used for cooking or distribution. Feast of St. Francis A s we celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, we admire the life of an ordinary man who was open to God's call to minister to the least of his sisters and brothers in an extraordinary way. His vision attracted others to follow him, not only in his day but throughout the centuries. In the Catholic Church we find a rich variety of spiritualties. We speak, for instance, of Benedictine spirituality, Dominican spirituality, Augustinian spirituality, or Franciscan spirituality to name just a few. Each spirituality has its origin in the life of a sincere man or woman who seeks a path to God that is suited to their culture, pursuits and personalities. These paths provide for us today a unique system of beliefs, virtues, ideals and principles which form a particular way to approach God and, therefore, a vision towards creation and a pattern for life. All these spiritualties arise from the same Christian heritage and they all aim at the same goal to love as Jesus loved. The difference is a matter of emphasis. These differences in emphasis give each its unique character trait. Franciscan spirituality, for instance, is deeply rooted in Trinitarian theology. The humility and poverty of God becoming human in Christ inspired Francis in his compassion for the poor and his unique appreciation for all God s creatures, great and small. We celebrate this feast as an opportunity to renew our commitment to each other, especially in our efforts to assist the poor and the innocent victims of human neglect. We renew our pledge towards working for peace, respecting the gift of life, and restoring the fragile balance of the environment. May the Lord guide us through the example of St. Francis! A Blessing for Pets and all animals lessed are you, Lord, Author of all living things. B On the fifth and sixth days of creation, you called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You gave human beings the responsibility to name them and the wisdom to know their service. You inspired St. Francis in a special way to call the animals his sisters and brothers. From among all creatures, you have given us the gift of our dear and beloved pets. We ask you to bless and watch over those whom you have entrusted to our care. Keep them safe, in good health, and guard them against harm. Through your gracious love, enable our pets to live according to your plan. May we praise you and thank you for your gifts in creation. Blessed are you, O Lord, and may all your creatures praise you, now and forever. Amen.

A special highlight of this year s gathering will feature the burning of our mortgage in the area between the church and Madden Hall! Participants in several of the Faith Formation programs have taken responsibility for many of the activities and games that make this annual gathering so much fun. A great deal of the community building takes place behind the scenes between those who prepare for the event, those who set up and clean up, those who prepare the food, supply the stations and work in the kitchen. Please consider joining one of these teams. Many hands make the burden light so that everyone can relax and enjoy the event. 5 Announcements Women's Club Quilt As a fall fundraiser, St. John the Beloved Women's Club is making available a beautiful handmade quilt entitled "Joseph's Coat of Many Colors." This work of art will be on display in the Commons until the Parish Picnic on October 27th. A $2.00 donation will secure an opportunity for you to own this exquisite, yet practical, artifact. The proud owners will be announced at the Parish Picnic, just in time to keep a lucky someone warm this winter! Proceeds will benefit local charities. Women's Club Meeting The St. John the Beloved Women's Club will meet on Monday, October 7, at 7pm in Madden Hall. Peg Lehmeyer from the ARK (Adult Respite Care) will be our guest speaker. Items to be discussed at the meeting include the Coastal Deanery Meeting, disbursement of funds, and Operation Christmas Child (ShoeBox Ministry). All women of the parish, young and old, are cordially invited to attend. Refreshments will be served. Announcements Christian Foundation for Children and Aging Today we welcome Fr. James O Toole from the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging (CFCA). CFCA Is a lay Catholic sponsorship ministry that helps children and elderly in 21 developing countries. To learn more, please call or visit the CFCA website at Visiting Priest Next weekend, October 12-13, we welcome Fr. Henry Kulah, the Pastor from St. Patrick Catholic Church in Charleston with a missionary appeal for his homeland of Ghana. Food for the Poor The weekend of October 19, we welcome Rev. Geoffrey Wirth from Food for the Poor, a ministry providing direct relief to the poor throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Fr. Wirth will share what he has witnessed about Food for the Poor s mission to care for the destitute as a means of living out the Gospel Mandate to love one another. SJB Concert Series On Sunday, Oct 6th at 4pm, the Singers of Summerville and the choir from Rollings Middle School of the Arts perform John Rutter s Mass for the Children. Senior Luncheon The October Senior Luncheon will be held Oct. 9th at noon in Madden Hall. Sign up is in the Church Commons. Reservations are due by Oct. 7th. Public Square Rosary Crusade If you feel America and its leaders could use prayer, then please bring your rosary and join us for the 2013 Public Square Rosary Crusade, Saturday, October 12th, Hutchinson Square, Summerville, 12:00 Noon - 1:00 PM.
