Stewardship is determined by: 1) Being properly registered and active for at least three months; 2) Faithful participation at liturgies; 3) Regular and identifiable support of the parish; These criteria are used to verify parishioner status for: sponsorship; participation in sacramental, educational, pastoral and social ministries, activities and enrichment programs; and use of facilities and services. PARISH SERVICES SVdP ~ The direct Helpline Number for St. Vincent de Paul Society is Baptism ~ The next parental prep session will be held at 6:30 pm, Wednesday, March 14th in the Church Commons. After attending this session, Baptisms may be scheduled during a daily or weekend Mass (outside of Advent & Lent), as well as at 11 am or 7 pm on Saturday, or 1pm on. Please register for the session by contacting the parish office. Godparents and grandparents are also welcome. Marriage ~ Engaged couples should contact Deacon Jim Walter at deaconjim@sjbsummerville.org to set an appointment to begin the process of preparation at least six months prior to the date of marriage. Miraculous Medal Novena ~ Mondays at 9:45am. Rosary ~ in the Chapel at 9:45 on Friday. Anointing of the Sick and Pastoral Visitation ~ To arrange for a priest, deacon or lay minister to visit a loved one who is sick, homebound, or hospitalized, please contact the parish office. Because of HIPAA policies, a hospital cannot notify the church, so a family member must take the initiative. Anointing is also offered following Mass. An immediate response is not always possible, so don t wait until a crisis occurs! Children's Liturgy of the Word ~ celebrated during the 9:30 & 11:30 Mass each for youngsters in Kindergarten through Grade 4. Nursery ~ A Nursery is offered for children 1-3 years old in Madden Hall during the 9:30 & 11:30 Masses. Early Childhood Faith Formation ~ for children 3-5 years of age in Madden Hall during the 9:30 Mass. Meals on Wheels ~ Delivers between 11:15am 12:30pm. Call Leslie at to volunteer. 3 2018 Bishop s Annual Appeal Once again, as we begin the 2018 Bishop s Annual Appeal, we encourage your sacrificial support to join this effort with Catholics throughout South Carolina. Each year, our diocesanwide ministries serve the poor and disadvantaged, educate our youth and adults, as well as support the clergy and religious that are serving in our state. The Bishop s Annual Appeal challenges us to look beyond our own parish boundaries and consider the broader mission of the Church, not just in South Carolina but throughout the world. The Bishop s Annual Appeal (BAA) is a primary source of funding to help sustain and expand ministries of the 96 parishes, 21 missions, 34 Catholic Schools, and agencies throughout the diocese. Each year, every Catholic in the diocese is asked to respond in prayer, in sharing their talents, and in making a sacrificial gift in support of this important appeal. Bishop Robert Guglielmone Msgr. Chet Moczydlowski Flu and Church This season the severity of influenza across the nation is such that 49 states have indicated widespread activity, and the number of cases being reported is rising each day. According to the Center for Disease Control, "a person might spread the flu virus by droplets from a cough, sneeze or talking, but one may also get the flu by touching a surface or object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth or nose. Eating utensils and dishes used by those who are sick should not be shared without washing thoroughly. Healthy adults can infect others beginning one day before symptoms develop and up to five to seven days after becoming sick." Refraining from receiving the chalice or extending a handshake anytime during the year when one is experiencing the symptoms of an illness should not be seen as disrespecting others in any way; it may be that the person wishes to not communicate his or her germs to others. SJB Youth Group Next week s special collection will benefit SJB Youth Ministry. The mission of St. John the Beloved Youth Ministry is to empower youth to live as disciples of Jesus Christ, to lead them into full participation in the Catholic faith community, and to foster real, personal growth in a relationship with God. Meetings are held September - May on evenings from 5:30-7:30pm. It includes faith formation, small group faith sharing, catechesis, service and, of course, fun. We served 180 children from Parkway Village and donations were made to Dorchester Habitat for Humanity. Neighborhood House in Charleston received a number of food cards for distribution and there were 21 children of prisoners who were served by us and the Prison Fellowship Program. Through the intervention of Jean Fox at Summerville Catholic School, there were 21 young people from Pinewood Group home that were also gifted with surprises. In the general Summerville area we responded to five families who asked for our help. Well done, good and faithful stewards, you fulfill the call to Christian discipleship! Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper February 13, 2018 Shrove Tuesday is also known as Pancake Day. What is Shrove Tuesday? And why eat pancakes on this day? The word shrove comes from a word that means to have your sins forgiven. In older times, people would celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation on Shrove Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday), and also ask forgiveness from one another. Then for their penance, they would keep the Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. In these older times, fasting laws were much stricter than they are now. No oil, fat, meat, dairy products, etc., were eaten at all during Lent. So what did you do with the eggs, oil, milk, etc., that you had at home? before Lent began! You made pancakes to eat Even the ingredients in pancakes have a spiritual significance: Eggs symbolize creation. Flour is the staff of life. Salt represents wholesomeness. Milk symbolizes purity. Through the centuries, Christians all around the globe have celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday as Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Day! This day is also called Mardi Gras, French for Fat Tuesday, because it is the last chance to eat up all the forbidden foods of Lent! Join us for our Pancake Supper on February 13th at in Madden Hall! All are Welcome! Women s Club The next monthly meeting of the SJB Women s Club will be on Monday, February 5th, at in Madden Hall. We will be getting ready for the upcoming annual Valentine Bingo Party. Please bring your donations of toiletries and household goods to this meeting so we can create the gift bags for the Valentine Party. We will be signing up for Soup and Stations and will hear reports from our various ministries. Information will be available concerning the South Carolina Council of Catholic Women (SCCCW) Convention to be held in Charleston this March. Please consider joining us. 5 Reading Buddies Volunteers Needed Tri-County Catholic Vacation BibleFellowship School Reading buddies is a program in which two or more individuals read together. Reading to young students can help them develop a love of reading and a greater motivation to read. Young students also read to their older buddies each week, as this allows younger readers to feel a sense of accomplishment while they build fluency. Scripture Reflection In today s Gospel Reading from St. Mark, it is reported that Jesus went to the synagogue and began to teach, but His teaching was somewhat different from that normally heard there for he taught with authority and not as the scribes. Often those who taught in Jesus time (the scribes) simply quoted others, a variety of Rabbis. However, Jesus taught with authority because He had authority. Jesus divine message was not quoting other humans, but quoting God. Jesus was One with God so He knew what He was talking about. Jesus taught with authority because He believed what He was teaching. He was familiar with the information which allowed Him to teach boldly. People listening could perceive that this was someone Who knew. Up until this time we have seen the Lord as the Son of Man Who submitted to His Father. He submitted to God in His Baptism, and to the Holy Spirit in the wilderness. To have authority also requires submission. We, too, are called to submit to God, but for us that is sometimes challenging because it requires humility, something that is not easy for many of us. Later in the Gospel of John there is another account of the Lord teaching at the Temple. He is challenged, and His response is quite simply, My teaching is not from myself; it comes from the One who sent me. We are not divine, but we, too, are sent as His disciples.
