2 Grand Knight s Message Ray Lenz Brother Knights, There was a first and second degree on March 19 th. We welcomed five new members to the Knights of Columbus. Many thanks to the team of knights who consistently show up to put on these degrees. If you have not been to one in a while please show up for the next scheduled first and/or second degree. It helps strengthen our unity and fraternity to show support for the council and the new members. We had our Past Grand Knight and Founder s Day dinner on Friday March 20 th. We all had a great fish dinner and it was nice to have people honoring our past grand knight Tim Bowen with their personal stories and anecdotes about him. Brother Dennis Drahos entertained us all with his reggae tune titled Tim was our Grand Knight sung to the tune of I Shot the Sheriff and Past Grand Knight Tim Bowen sung to the tune of Bad, Bad Leroy Brown. On a personal note, I would like to take this time to thank Tim for all his help with my term as Grand Knight. It would have been much more difficult without Tim s advice. For those of you who have not been to a meeting recently, we have a nice new Perlick refrigerator behind the bar. Thanks to Rudy Mishich, Mike Haase, John Ruszkiewicz, Gerard Janquart and Dave Kunze for taking out the old one, building a new base and moving in the new refrigerator. Next on the agenda is a new flat screen television for the bar area. For those of you who could not attend the last meeting, I have made the following selections: Knight of the Month for March is Tom Cane for his excellent work on the Boston Store Community Days discount book sale. Great job Tom! Family of the Month for March is the Mike Clune family for their work in the bar for the Snowball Dance. The nominating committee met and came up with a list of candidates for the upcoming elections. If you are interested in running or nominating someone, come to the next meeting and be heard. There is a fourth degree on April 11 in Appleton. There will be a membership drive on April19th at St. Martin of Tours. Don t forget to get your raffle tickets and money in by the next meeting. If you know of any Brother Knights who would like to attend meetings, but for one reason or another cannot make it on their own, let someone know and we will try to make arrangements to help them attend. To all my Brother Knights and your families, have a blessed Holy Week and a Happy Easter! 'So it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from the dead' - Luke 24:46 April Activities: 14 7:30 PM Business Meeting 28 7:00 PM Officers Meeting Tootsie Roll Drive. 3 Chaplain s Corner Fr. Mark Brandl Dear Brother Knights: It is the eve of the Triduum, however many of you may not see this until Easter is over so in that case, Happy Easter to everyone. Our Easter celebration is one continuous celebration that lasts fifty days and highlights the hope of our eternal destiny. Easter is the reason we have hope. We do not see our lives and those who have gone before us as the end, but it is just the beginning if we see correctly. It gives us the certain hope that we will see our departed loved ones soon and that gives us the strength to keep moving on. We pray for those who have not found Christ and do not share this miracle with us. It must be tragic in life to not have that faith and believe that when time is done here, it is over forever. That is truly heart breaking. Unfortunately, unbelief is taking over in the younger generations. God is not relevant in their lives. The mind is contaminated by technology and if we are not careful, technology may become our god also. It is more than technology but something happened between generations. The 1960 s certainly spawned a rebellion against authority and that will mean God also because God represents a moral authority that many want no part of. It only takes some common sense in looking at the data of crime, and our own experience as people to know for certain that as a nation our moral compass has disintegrated. Congratulations to the following Brother Knights who are Celebrating Birthdays in April: Thomas J. Adamski Raymond J. Baranowski Robert V. Kujawa Frank K. Valasek David J. Berka Jerome W. Placzek David R. Schlicke Ronald Belair Rudy C. Mishich Joseph J. Dorlack David M. Baudry Robert C. Kabella Richard A Kraemer Timothy P. Moynihan Karl Dovnik Jeffery P. Brozynski John J. Kleczka Rev. Daniel Ribeiro Rev. James Lobacz TEMPO We are at a crossroads in the world. There has been a poor Christian witness over many years. For example, it is not just unbeliever s money who has built the pornography or drug industry. Radical Islam gives God a black eye also. People say to themselves, who needs religion when you witness that kind of horror. It soon turns into unbelief. I look at the Apostle s and they converted the world in worse circumstances than we had. God gives us the same gifts to evangelize as the Apostle s yet we are not as successful. It is God s will that all come to Him. In the Archdiocese of Milwaukee as a result of last year s Synod, we will emphasize evangelization in all the parishes this year and share with each other some best practices. I almost seems like it is now or never. Let us pray in this Easter Season for our loved ones, and our local parishes for success. May God give us the courage to do what is necessary. God Bless you, Fr. Mark Mary Queen of the Knights - pray for us. Father Michael J. McGivney - intercede for us. 3
4 April Tootsie Roll Drive!!! Within the council, April means Helping Citizens With Intellectual Disabilities, synonymous with the Tootsie Roll Program. Donations are returned to organizations which promote and support citizens with intellectual disabilities. This is an excellent chance to help the Knights help others. To volunteer or information contact: St. Mary HC: Dave Kunze St. Alphonsus: Gerry Ruedinger St. Martin of Tours: Rudy Mishich Notice for the Election of Officers During the March business meeting an important part of Council business was discussed. A nomination committee was formed to select officers for the fraternal year. The committee met and have made selections for each officers role. These nominations will be presented at the May monthly business meeting. In addition to the recommendations from the committee, Council by-laws allow nominations from the floor at this meeting. Nominees for officer positions will be published in the June TEMPO. Only members who are in good standing and who have been initiated in the first three degrees of the Order shall be eligible to hold office in the Council. (Art. 4 By-Laws) A Message From Your Field Agent Michael Exner, FIC, PGK Plan for this Tax Day and into the Future TEMPO April 15 (tax day) is right around the corner. It s become popular this time of year to encourage the opening of an IRA or similar retirement annuity, or the depositing of additional funds into an existing account, as a tax-savings vehicle. Or perhaps someone has tried to convince you to open an account, touting the rate of interest that money in one of these accounts can earn. Let me join the chorus of folks encouraging you to open or add funds to an annuity, but for a different reason. Certainly, contributing money to a Knights of Columbus annuity will allow you to save some money on your income tax return. And, our annuities do pay a very competitive interest rate, consistent with our primary goal of absolute safety of principal. Opening or adding to an annuity for these reasons, however, strikes me as taking a short-term view of a product that is designed to provide long-term security. How much security? How does retirement income that you cannot outlive guaranteed sound to you? Here at the Knights of Columbus, you can open a retirement annuity for as little as $300. Consistent and disciplined savings placed into that annuity over time can guarantee you an income at retirement that you cannot outlive. That guarantee along with the fact that no one has ever lost money left in a Knights of Columbus annuity (remember : absolute safety of principal) really will provide you with peace of mind. I am happy to meet with you at your convenience and in your home to explain in detail the benefits of opening a Knights of Columbus annuity, along with the benefits of our top-rated life insurance, disability income and long-term care insurance plans. If anyone knows of a Brother who is ill, in distress, or has passed on, please contact the Grand Knight or Financial Secretary. Thank you for your help with this important role within the council. Fraternally, Michael Exner, FIC, PGK (262) Michael.Exner@KofC.org 4
5 Dear Brother Knights and Supporters of the Knights, It is not to late to get your tickets! The Wisconsin State Council Knights of Columbus annual statewide charity raffle will be held April 24th, The total prizes to be paid out to 35 winners will be $115,000. This is the largest raffle in the State of Wisconsin for the $5.00 ticket; and your odds of winning are certainly much better than in the state lottery. The use of the net proceeds is for many very worthy causes, and all work is by unpaid volunteers. Why not buy several for yourself, and sell the rest to your friends, relatives or co-workers. Since the drawing takes place at the KC State Convention on April 24, 2015, I would appreciate having all sold ticket stubs and payments returned to me no later than April 15. Checks are payable to: K of C Trinity Council #4580 and can be mailed to the address below.
