2 Joke Corner One day, a lady was sitting in her back deck reading, when a she saw a van crash through her fence into her back yard. She helped the elderly driver to the lawn chair. My goodness! she exclaimed. You are quite old to be driving! Yes, he replied, I am old enough that I do not need a drivers licence. What NO DRIVERS LICENCE? Nope! The last time I saw my doctor, he asked me for my drivers licence. I gave it to him and he cut it up into the waste basket. You won t need this any more the doctor said. So, I thanked him and left. Articles are always in need to inform Brother Knights. MESSAGE FROM THE GRAND KNIGHT SEPTEMBER 2018 Brother Knights, Welcome back form a great summer. It was too hot and very uncomfortable for some. I hope all had a very good and very enjoyable summer taking in all that summer had to offer. Now as the season is changing, it brings to mind that we begin a new chapter in life and our Council once again. The circle is never broken and so should never our commitment to God. We will have to try to work harder this year to grow our Council. Even though we met our insurance quota, we fell short of getting Star Council by 4 members last year. But this year brings new opportunities for us and we need to capitalize on them. Unfortunately I will not be there for our first meeting of the year due to work demands. I leave you in the capable hands of the Deputy Grand Knight. I will be praying for all that we have good health prosperous year ahead. 3 Chaplain s Corner Brother Knights, September has, over the years, become a popular month for weddings. It brought to mind a reflection on marriage written be a couple (Roy and Cody Derry) married on November 26, 1924: (Page 234, 'Married for Life') Dance lessons ought to be a requirement for premarital counselling. Any couple who can survive the lessons is ready for marriage! In ballroom dancing, the man is the designated leader. It is his job to guide his partner around the floor, indicating which way she is to go and when she is to turn. The woman's assignment is to follow her partner's lead, complementing his moves, her weight counterbalancing his as they glide through a series of twirls. Without this clear delineation of roles, without leadership and submission, cooperation and communication, the couple would not float "effortlessly" about; they would trip over each other and fall unceremoniously to the dance floor! Dancing is not some kind of competition between the partners. Rather, it is an art form in which two people unite and strive together to achieve a height of artistic, emotional, and spiritual expression they could never reach alone. It is the perfect picture of a marriage. A good leader does not bully his partner, pushing and pulling her across the floor. He guides her gently and considerately, watching over her shoulder to protect her. His strength supports her beauty and grace; she trusts him and willingly follows his lead because she can depend on his love. Make your marriage a dance of love. The husband provides leadership to his wife the way Christ does to his church, not by domineering but by cherishing. (Ephesians 5:23) Amen Father Peter Moher Chaplain A Memo from your K of C Insurance Agent Ask Eligible Men to Join Today, I want to address the growth of the Order. Membership growth is the fuel that keeps this great fraternal engine running. All of our charitable works at the council, state, national and international level are thanks to our hard-working members. And more members equals more charity. We know that the membership blitz is a tried and true way for councils to get more men to join. We see these pushes often in March, in celebration of Founder s Day, and again in October. These drives are successful because brother Knights have increased visibility speaking or presenting during and after Masses and at special events. We must remember that we have a duty to ask each and every Catholic gentleman to join our ranks for the good of the Church, the community and the Order. During the rest of the year, we often forget to ask men to join and to bring their families into the Knights of Columbus family. You probably know an eligible Catholic man you could ask today. What if the only reason he hasn t joined is because no one has asked him yet? When telling a prospect about the strengths of the Order, don t forget our greatest fraternal benefit: our insurance program. This is often a selling point to a potential member who is on the fence. Many members become Knights simply to be able to buy coverage to protect their family. Soon after, they realize the good our charitable works do for their community, and they are proud to be members. 4 District Deputy s News Flash Dear Brothers, I hope that all had a good summer and welcome back for this Fraternal season. There were a few Knights who passed away and will sadly be missed please keep them in your prayers. Again our fraternal year starts, but really two months have passed by in the fraternal year which starts July 1 st with little activity in our councils. However council 3909 was active with a fish and chip dinner for the widows of deceased members and putting on an admissions degree for 4, yes, 4 new members. Great start to the Star Council award. All councils should be striving for this. Can your council achieve this? On the topic of Star Council, the councils now must follow the new "Faith in Action" which was brought in at the June convention. The Grand Knights should have this and follow it to achieve Star Council or any of the other awards. There is going to be Financial Secretary training this September please see your Grand Knight if interested. Also I'm starting early to ask the councils to start putting funds away for your representative to the 116th Annual State Convention next year in Niagara Falls Ontario. Every council should send a delegate. Deputy Grand Knight s Message Brother Knights, Brother Knights welcome back! We are setting out on another year of Council activities working together for the betterment of Holy Redeemer Parish, our sponsored charities and our Council. Please make a commitment to participate in one or many activities as your talents and time can support. Also, if you know of someone who might want to join our Council, please talk to them or let me know their name so we can approach them. As you may remember, the Sudbury Area Knights of Columbus Councils have sponsored a room in the expansion of the Maison McCulloch Hospice. We committed to donate $100k over the next five years (or less) for this purpose. To raise funds, we decided to sell Cash Draw Calendars for $20 each. There are a maximum of 4400 available for sale for 2019 throughout Sudbury. These are going on sale this weekend and will be available in the foyer after each mass (until October). Details of the whole prize list is on the back page of the calendar. Volunteers to help with these sales are required. You can also take a number of calendars to sell on your own if you wish. Please see me after our meeting if you want to help out this way. Check out and buy a calendar (or two) for yourself they are very beautiful with each month displaying a different scene from the Hospice. All funds raised will help support a very good cause. 5 Council Notes Dear Brothers, Welcome back for another season. I trust that you are refreshed and ready to help out with the various council and church activities for the next council year. L Arche Sudbury is having their annual fundraising dinner again this year. It will be held on Thursday Sept. 26 th at the Caruso Club. Doors open at 4:30, dinner at 6:00. I already have Knights who expressed interest in attending, please have your ticket money to me ASAP, on or before the meeting so I can go and get the tickets. The cost to will be $20.00 per person with the Council making a donation for the balance. I have reserved 3 tables. Our time slot to volunteer at the bingo is mostly on Saturday from 12:30 to 2:30 pm. New volunteers are always welcome to share the work load. Please let us know if you are interested. Best regards, Financial Secretary Santo Fragomeni ( ) Note from the 4 th Degree November 11 th 2018 will be the 100 th anniversary of the ending of the First World War, 11 th hour 11 th day 11 th month. It would be nice to have the Knights of Columbus taking part in this. Whether it s having a Colour Party there and Brother Knights also being part of this. Knights of Columbus were deeply involved in many areas of this conflict. It would be nice to have them take part. Willing to train people for the Colour Party. World War I, also known as the First World War, the Great War, or the War to End All Wars, was a global war originating in Europe that lasted from 28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918 More info will be available from the 4 th Degree. Vivat Jesus, Eric Moles, Faithful Navigator Officers for the Season Many thanks to the Brother Knights who have let their names stand for election or re-election to the various posts, and much encouragement to those elected to pursue the duties of the various posts. New Members and Recruiting for On June 30 th, the end of the fraternal year we had a roster of 140 (134 Active and 6 Inactive) members. This compares with, a roster of 143 (135 Active and 8 Inactive) members on June 30 th of the season. On the recruitment front, our quota for is 9 new members and we must have 3 of our members elect to become insured with the Knights, in order to achieve Star Council. Are we up for the challenge? Delta Bingo (Formerly Boardwalk Bingo) Our Bingos went well during the summer, and Brother Peter Pagnutti s scheduling use of Signup Genius online self scheduling site seems to be working well. He sends out an e- mail notice towards the end of a month for scheduling of the next month. If you do not use Peter will give the bingo team member a phone call. Signing up to Signup Genius Online you can see who has signed up for our various bingo assignments and which spots are open to volunteer for. We have 17 active bingo volunteers. Of these, there will be the snow birds who will soon be going away for the winter. Also there are also a few guys who are temporarily not available to come out and help either for work or health. I hope they will soon be able to come back and help out. This will put a strain on the remaining volunteers. Our Council is very fortunate in having almost a full year of bingo assignments. We do not want to loose this privilege. So please keep up the good work. Each assignment gains us anywhere from $550 to $800 depending on various factors. Our charities depend on us. We need new volunteers who can spend 2 hours at the Delta Bingo on Notre Dame Ave. usually on a Saturday early afternoon to share the work load. Please let us know if you are interested. A partner to come out with you is welcome. It is not difficult and can be fun.
