3 Dear Brother Knights, Chaplain s Corner 1,985 years ago (give or take a couple years) our Church was born on the day of Pentecost. The passion, the resurrection, the Ascension, have all come and gone and we celebrate the Holy Spirits descent on the crown of God s creation on Sunday, May 20. It is the Holy Spirit that gives the human creation the divine and spiritual life. It is the Spirit that enables God to indwell us as believers, and to actually feel blessings and be close to God. Jesus always said without me you can do nothing. Christ lives in us now and does His work through us in the Holy Spirit. This is what He meant by that statement. If we want to do something to please God, it must begin with the prompting of the Holy Spirit in us. We discern and ask God to help us do His will. God s plans for us will always end in success. When we fail at things, God is teaching us patience, but also whatever our endeavor may not be His will in our lives. For instance, like you I have many nieces, nephews, who do not practice the faith that I worry about. I want them too, and I cannot successfully get them to Church. I know it is God s will that they do, but it is not necessarily God s will that I be the one to convince them to do it even though I am a priest. I heard some great advice in a talk recently. The speaker made it his prayer that his son who recently graduated college and who was not practicing the faith, would meet a Catholic girl, get a job with a Catholic boss, and that his son would have a St. Ambrose come into his life. St. Ambrose is the mentor of St. Augustine who converted him to the faith. We often think about the tears St. Monica shed for her son Augustine but it was St. Ambrose who connected Augustine to God. Monica provided the prayers. We always want to be the one leading someone home to the faith. Sometimes, we must let God bring the right person into the life of our loved ones. That person is what we can call a St. Ambrose. Someone our loved one can relate to God know the right person for their life. The only thing we can do is sometimes mess up God s perfect plan. Let God lead the process. Fifty days is a great Easter season and I hope you enjoyed every day. We have an additional fifty days or so of Easter every year. We celebrate one of those days every Sunday. The Lord s Day or Sunday, the Feast of the resurrection. About 100 days a year, we celebrate the resurrection in our lives. Does that tell you the importance of Easter in our life? Thank you God for the revelation of the resurrection. TEMPO Brother Knights Celebrating Birthdays in May Brad R. 5 A Message From Your Field Agent Michael Exner, FICF, PGK Protecting Your Paycheck For most of us, the idea of not working is an exciting one. We relish weekends and vacations. We look forward to holidays and special occasions. We plan for retirement and count down the number of days until we arrive at that freedom that we have planned for so deliberately. But what if the end of work comes not with freedom, but with surprise? What if the end of work comes with an illness or an accident that prevents us from doing our job? Will we be prepared? Can we be? With the help of the Knights of Columbus, members and their families can. We welcome retirement because we have planned for it. We know when it is coming, we know what it will take to get there, and we know what we will need when it arrives. But how can we plan for something unexpected? How can we know what we will need when we do not know what will happen? Disability insurance is often dismissed by working men and women because they think it will never happen to them. Their jobs are fairly safe. Their lives are fairly healthy. Disability they say is simply something they will never experience. The statistics tell a different story. According to the United States government, a staggering 1 in 4 of today s 20-year-olds will become disabled before reaching the age of 67.(1) The nature of the job is irrelevant. According to the Social Security Administration, 95 percent of all disabling illnesses and accidents happen outside of the workplace.(2) Consider a typical male, age 35, a non-smoker, who works at an office job with some outdoor responsibilities and leads a very healthy lifestyle. He has a 21 percent chance of being injured or becoming ill and unable to work for three months or longer prior to retirement. (3) And what happens once that occurs? What happens if your last paycheck is your last paycheck? If your illness or injury is among the 95 percent that happen outside of work, workers compensation will be of no assistance to you. If you plan to rely on the government, you may find that you are among the 64 percent of Americans including severely disabled Americans who do not receive any assistance from the government or governmental programs, including Medicare, Social Security and supplemental Security Insurance.(4) Continued.. TEMPO Continued. But the situation does not need to be that desperate. Your membership in the Knights of Columbus gives you and your eligible family members exclusive access to disability income insurance that can help safeguard your paycheck. With Knights of Columbus Disability Income Insurance, you can help make sure that you continue to earn an income, even when you cannot work. Our disability income insurance is designed to be flexible so that, working with me, your Brother Knight field agent, you can customize it to fit your needs. You choose the monthly benefit amount that s right for you, the elimination period that makes the most sense, and the maximum benefit period for your policy. And, by purchasing a disability income insurance policy from the Knights of Columbus, you have the added security of knowing that you are doing business with an unapologetically Catholic company that makes sure its investments do not violate Church teaching, and which has been repeatedly recognized as a World s Most Ethical company. You owe it to yourself and to your family to make sure that your financial future is secure, regardless of what happens. Don t be caught off guard by surprises. Be on guard and be prepared. SPIRITUS $250 Charity Request Synopsis Spiritus Evangelization Ministry is supported by the Knights of Columbus State Council Resolution Committee.as a Recurring Resolution for their work with Catholic youth in our state. And has resolved to support SPIRITUS since Trinity Council has been an active supporter of this Youth Ministry since that time also. As Pope Francis stated at the World Youth Day 2013 That the best tool for evangelizing the young is another young person. SPIRITUS and the St. John Bosco Youth Day are two very important Catholic youth oriented ministries' that Trinity Council has declared as budget items. Along with our continued support of priests and seminarians our duty to promote the Faith among the young where we can is a mission every Knight should take seriously. 8 COUNCIL #6448 ST LEONARD MUSKEGO, WI US (KOFC6448.ORG) 2018 Tootsie Roll Drive Dear Brother Knights, On behalf of Council 6448, we extend a warm thank you to Trinity Council #4580 for your help and support in our Tootsie Roll Drive this year. We were in a bind with not enough coverage at Pick n Save in Hales Corners on Saturday May 5 th. However, you guys got it together and showed up in full force to volunteer. By having all of you at the store handing out Tootsie Rolls, I know that put more donations in the cans to help the kids. Also, at our council s business meeting this past week, one of our brother knights presented the signs that you used at the Tootsie Roll event. This is a terrific idea and we see it as beneficial for other functions as well. We look forward to picking a couple of these up in the near future. Thanks for sharing! I think it is great to see one council help out another council. If you find at some point you are in need of volunteers, please don t hesitate to call on St. Leonard s Council #6448 for support. Sincerely, Thomas Davis Deputy Grand Knight St. Leonard KOC c.c. Mr. Bernie Cleppe St. Leonard KOC Grand Knight Mr. Dave Kunze Grand Knight - Trinity KOC 8
