We enjoyed fun and games outside including rousing relays and 9 square in the air. Following the games, we went inside and feasted on fried chicken, pizza and desserts. After the meal, we gathered in the sanctuary for a spirited and inspirational worship service. The music was led by the Culpeper Youth Praise Band and our speaker was Chelsea Morse. (District Youth Continued) I want to thank Culpeper for hosting and providing a delicious meal. Thanks also go to the Youth Praise Band, Pastor Jessie, everyone who attended and the District Youth Council. We collected over 170 pounds of school supplies which were shipped in three large boxes to the Henry Fork Service Center in Rocky Mount, VA. We also collected $60 for the Youth Service Fund. Thank you for your generosity. Our next Fifth Sunday Praise and Worship service will be held at Westover UMC on Sunday, October 29 from 3-5. Please come and bring your family and friends. All ages are welcome. The service includes a hymn sing so be ready to call out your favorite hymn! At our Praise and Worship service on April 30 at Rodes UMC we participated in a Stop Hunger Now/Rise Against Hunger packaging event. Here is an update on those meals. The meals from the meal packaging event on 4/30/2017 were shipped in a container totaling 285,120 meals from the Lynchburg, VA warehouse. The meals will be received by SHN/RAH in-country partner ORPHANetwork in Nicaragua. ORPHANetwork's mission is to equip orphans and at-risk children in developing countries to fully realize their Godgiven potential. They serve abandoned, abused, and atrisk children in Nicaragua through local churches, school systems, and orphanages. ORPHANetwork supports 155 feeding programs throughout Nicaragua. Through these programs, nearly 18,000 children are nourished each weekday. The communities served are some of the poorest in Nicaragua and the feeding programs prevent children from becoming social orphans. By guaranteeing one nutritious meal to these children each weekday, the probability they can continue living with their families increases significantly. The programs also serve the community holistically by drawing the children to school, monitoring their health, teaching health and hygiene, working with pregnant mothers on pre-natal and infant health, providing a space for families to work together and connecting them to the local church. ORPHANetwork additionally supports six orphanages, which are home to more than 300 children. District Youth Retreat February 23-25, 2018 We will collect toiletries for TOP, Teens Opposing Poverty. Culpeper, VA North Garden, VA Pastor Tim: Darryl Lam went to Mission Central on Sept. 10 with 100 cleaning buckets and 120 hygiene kits what a blessing. Darryl said, I pray with Irma going strong that people in her path will be safe. I also pray that folks will continue to give to this important mission, with the two hurricanes the need for buckets and hygiene kits will be great. Darryl Help Assemble Cleaning Buckets All youth and adults are invited to help the District assemble/verify Cleaning Buckets for the flood victims. Where: Woodland UMC, Woodland Church Road, Culpeper. When: Wednesday, October 18 and Saturday, October 21. Both days from 10 am 4 pm. Even if you can spare an hour that would be helpful. If you and your group can help, please contact Gloria Phillips at or gloreyacres@gmail.com. Gloria can also answer any questions you might have concerning this mission project. URGENT MESSAGE re: Cleaning Kits The picture below shows the required foam sponge vs. the cellulose sponge, which is NO LONGER TO BE INCLUDED in the buckets. The reason is because they are damp, pick up moisture, and cause the items in the bucket to mold. All the buckets we have received have cellulose sponges. We have spent hours removing these sponges and drying the buckets/contents so that they do not mildew. We don t have the funds to replace them. Even buckets that were assembled 2 days ago had wet contents because of the cellulose sponges. The foam sponges do not have to look like the one pictured; they just need to be foam. 6 Report of Annual Conference It is summer time and what is on the mind of a United Methodist? Of course, we all know this is the time for Methodists to gather for their annual conferences. Like an annual physical exam, annual conference assesses how all its churches are doing. Annual Conference is a time for study, worship, and singing, to reconnect with old friends and connect with new friends. It is a time to discuss the direction of the church. It is a chance to see how we in Virginia are doing with meeting our goals. In a short (3 days) time the Virginia Annual conference manages to do that and more. It holds a special memorial celebration for those pastors and spouses who have received their spiritual reward. It celebrates those clergy members, who are retiring, and perhaps the highlight of the conference is the service of ordination, wherein in provisional members will begin their professional journey, and through ordination new members are received as members in full connection. We ordained 15 Elders, 40 Licensed Local Pastors, one Deacon, one Associate member, 15 Provisional members and celebrated the ministry of 43 retiring pastors. Finally on Sunday morning, our bishop fixes the appointments so that all clergy will be assigned a church or full time spiritual work. All of this goes back to the time of John Wesley. Now, lest you think this year s conference was just another edition, let me inform you that, it was not. This is the first year of our new Bishop: Sharma Lewis. This ties in directly with the Conference Theme: A New Thing: Isaiah 43:19. This was not a ho-hum conference. It was exciting and our new bishop let everyone know that this would be exciting. During The last four years we enjoyed Bishop Cho s focus on prayer and now Bishop Lewis focus is: Jesus and making disciples. If you asked me to explain this year s conference in one word it would be electrifying. Almost like an old fashioned revival. It was a time to renew your faith and answer the call Here I am Lord. When Bishop Lewis preaches, she reaches out to you (she actually walked off the stage and touched folks by grasping their hands.) There was more. With a huge bookstore display from Cokesbury, we mingled with folks from all over the Conference. We made new friends and greeted old ones. During the conference business sessions, we listened to reports from the various agencies. This was a real check-up on how we are doing as United Methodists. Perhaps the most controversial part came when we discussed resolutions. Unfortunately, this did not occur until the last, so that adequate time was lacking. I would recommend that you attend the next Chat and Chew chaired by Bishop Lewis, within the various districts. She listens: you will not be disappointed. Finally, although you can read many reports on this annual conference, I would recommend that all United Methodists attend at least one annual conference. You do not have to be a delegate; you may attend as an observer. The actions of the Virginia Conference affect us all. Respectfully submitted, William Stead, Delegate 5 Talent Academy October 19, from 9:00 am 3:00 pm is the 5 Talent Academy.
