2 From The Pastor s Pen Susan V. Mills Our church was organized and chartered in 1901; and so this year marks the 115 th year of ministry in the community of Waldport. The verse above could be the considered the life verse of the church for it seems redwood logs have played a recurring role in the history of our church. The first church building was a one room structure that can still be found four blocks north of our current church building. David Ruble, a local homesteader, donated the lot for a church with the stipulation that all denominations be allowed to use the building. The lumber for the church was made from logs which were cut on the Lint Slough and floated down to a local mill. A total of $600 was spent for needed supplies and labor, with the town folks raising $300 and the Presbytery granting the remaining $300. The individuals who made up the congregation came from various denominations: The Disciples of Christ, Methodist, and Presbyterian. They all agreed to join together as a church under the auspices of the Presbyterian Church USA. Mrs. William A. Smick recorded the first miracle of a redwood log in the church history: When the lumber was on the ground for the building, the people were wondering where they could get blocks for the foundation. The next morning the tide had cast a fine redwood log on the beach just back of the building site. This was used for foundation blocks. In 1926, a second unit was added to the church building. The foundation blocks for this addition were cut from a large redwood log that washed up on the beach once again. The church did indeed prosper through the years and in March of 1954, the church acquired land next to the Masonic building and a new church was constructed to meet the ever-growing congregation. The present building was constructed in two phases: the first phase included the fellowship hall, three classrooms, the kitchen, the boiler room, a library, restrooms and a store room. This phase was completed and dedicated in March The congregation moved into the completed portion of the building and worshipped in the fellowship hall while the second phase was begun. The U.S. Forest Service donated 14 trees to be used as beams in the new sanctuary. Each tree was cut into a 40-foot long beam and trucked to Toledo to be rough squared. At the building site, the beams were hand adzed and raised into an A-frame design. Another giant redwood washed ashore on the bayshore spit. The log was 80 feet long and produced 14,000 board feet of lumber which was used for the original exterior siding, sanctuary paneling and guild room walls. A fitting climax to the little church planted by God s grace, which continues to grow and prosper by reaching out with Christ s love to the community of Waldport. May we ever be aware of God s providential care in our history! Grace and peace, But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do. Pastor Susan V.
