Marcia and the Chancel Choir for such beautiful anthems on Blue Christmas / Longest Night Service: Hymn of Peace and Come, Light of Hope; and Silent Night for Christmas Eve s Lessons & Carols. Judy Carey for shepherding the crafts for Read & Feed; and Betty Groth and her team for preparing a nutritious, delicious meal! Denise McPherson for tolling the bell at the Blue Christmas / Longest Night Service. Everyone who contributed in any way to the Community Kitchen all your time, talents, treasures, prayers, encouraging words made it possible to serve our first breakfast on December 13 th! Judy Carey and Betty & Don Groth for facilitating the Bible in 90 Days and encouraging nearly half the church to read through the Bible! The Central Coast Chorale and Dr. Mary Lee Scoville for bringing an evening of beautiful music to us with their Wishes & Candles concert. The members of Community Presbyterian Church for bringing in over 227 pounds of food for Waldport Food Share during the month of December that is in addition to the food placed in the green bin for Christmas baskets! Thank you for your generosity all throughout the year! Inside this issue: 2014 in Pictures 3, 6-7 Anniversaries & Birthdays 3 Calendar 5 Financial Report 3 Our Congregation 8-9 Pastor s Pen 2 Session Highlights 4 Did you know Union Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, published a book called Bringing Good News: 40 Stories of Congregations & the Ministries that Transformed Them...and the story of our Read & Feed ministry was included!
2 From The Pastor s Pen Susan V. Mills I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to Him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3:18-21 What an amazing December! So many blessings throughout the month. We were able to serve our first Saturday out of the new Community Kitchen on December 13 th! There are still several details to work out (drawers to be added, dishwasher chemicals to be purchased and set up before we are able to put the dishwasher in service, hooks, drawer organizers, pot racks, etc.). But...we are operational and serving our community! Another delight was to host the Central Coast Chorale under the direction of Dr. Mary Lee Scoville as they brought their Wishes & Candles Concert to Community Presbyterian Church. The chorale began at our church over 19 years ago, but had not performed here in a very long time. They were thrilled to be back in the church and loved performing once again in our beautiful, sacred space. One of the gentlemen who was a member of the chorale asked for a tour of the new kitchen and said the he would be in contact regarding the possibility of using the facility for an upcoming event for another music group. The word is out that we have a beautiful facility that we are willing to share with the community and that we are a welcoming congregation. Several of the contractors and the users were stunned to hear that we have only a 39 member congregation and wonder how we could pull this renovation off. Our response is always the verse printed above that it is God who is able to accomplish exceedingly abundantly above all that we could have ever asked or imagined! We were grateful to have Edward Townsend join the church in December. Edward shared his time and talents in the construction of the Community Kitchen, for which we are grateful. Additionally, our church s involvement in Read & Feed was included in a new book written by Henry Simmons, PhD, and Rita Boyer, MACE, of Louisville s Union Presbyterian Seminary, called Bringing Good News: 40 Stories of Congregations and Ministries that Transformed Them. When Dr. Simmons called to tell us the good news about our church being included in the book, he wanted to know if we were still operating a Read & Feed dinner once a month. It was my delight to let him know that our church sponsored Read & Feed in partnership with other churches each Tuesday night and that we were also partnered with Seashore Literacy to offer a Free Community each Saturday of the month. He was amazed at all that we have been able to do. As a Christian Education Professor at Union, he was delighted to hear that we had also offered VBS during summer to children in the community. He ended the conversation with the encouragement of Continue sharing the Good News of the Gospel which we fully intend to do! I thank my God upon every remembrance of you...and your passion for sharing the Good News of Christ. In Christ's service, Susan V. Mills Community Kitchen is in operation! Page 2

4 POETRY CORNER This Tree & Me At the instant of my amazed approach This tree drew me to her presence Standing solid in her solitary stance Beside the quiet river s sandy margin; Already old before I was young She waited at times impatiently As she in turmoil cast down a limb Or a cascade of gliding, golden leaves To signify the brooding, pent-up passion Flowing in the cambium of that trunk So massive in girth as if to defy The measure of the forester in awe Of the immensity f his endeavor; And who am I to this great growth Who in sentinel has seen so many deaths Arrayed about her skirts moldering Into the receptive, nourishing soil Even as our own dear grandfather Whose ashes blest in sanctity Returned to her his energy and love They shared together in her scented shade, Resting in the quiet glory of middle years As the Indian Summer held their heat of caring, And even now her roots reach out for him Her tendrils kissing the heart that loved her, by Wallace E. High Embracing the body that fought the fire Set upon her trunk one day by knaves, Her own scared stature the living proof Of loves power over hate and ignorance; And so I too return in joy to greet her As my eyes leap at her form in green grandeur My nostrils bathe in her cleansing fragrance; Even though my person may be far away This mind in longing rejoins me to her side, The majestic cottonwood like no other Binds me to her crowned and verdant mem ries Entwined in God s spirit with this tree and me. Sue & Mike Adams among the giant old growth trees on their recent vacation NEW MEMBER INTRODUCTION Edward Earl Townsend My life can be compared to a stretch of sand. One can see the imprint of just one set of footprints. I have lived and seen Gods miracles. I feel I have purpose for having this love for God in my heart. I pray to become a strong community member. Lesley and I would like to be married here. We can add another Townsend plaque. I thank God for having been pulled up in his net here in Waldport. Thank you, Lord. Page 4
