2 From The Pastor s Pen Susan V. Mills On a recent Saturday morning, I had the pleasure of introducing a new couple to the workings of the Community Kitchen. They had come to volunteer their time and were curious about how the Community Kitchen came about. I was only too happy to share what I consider to be one of the miraculous stories that have taken place at Community Presbyterian Church. After the kitchen, we made our way to the sanctuary and I shared the story of the redwood log that had washed up in the bay on the day the church prayed and decided they would build at it s current location. That redwood log provided all the paneling inside the sanctuary and offices, as well as the original siding outside. They loved hearing how God has been at work in and through the life of the people of this church over the years. They thought the sanctuary was a beautiful sacred space. Our conversation that day started me thinking about all that happens in the church on Saturdays and Sundays. Those two days host the most significant events in the life of our church each week. Here in this place the drama of God s unconditional love is played out before our eyes each Saturday and Sunday morning. The communal stories of God s faithfulness found in our own lives and in the scriptures are told and retold as we sit at table, and as we share God s Word from the pulpit. If we take the time to really listen to the stories both new and ancient, it keeps those of us who are prone to forgetfulness and who can sometimes wander like lost sheep, aware of God s activity in our lives. It can also move us to awe and wonder that we get to participate in those stories! Here in this place, little by little, week after week, as we tell our stories and listen to others, we begin to see more clearly God s hand moving through time, space and history, reaching down into our hearts and lives to let us know God is with us. We are reminded again and again that we serve a God who is near and not far off. We are also reminded who our neighbors are and the Holy Spirit transforms us and inspires us to live as God s people. Now we confess that we may be slow at seeing the hand of God at work on our behalf, for we are culturally attuned to having what we want to have happen instantly. But we are reminded by Scripture that God does act in miraculous and earth shattering ways; though it may take some period of time before it is clearly seen. In Scripture we see that God does indeed work, but sometimes it is in movements as slow and powerful as tectonic plates grinding against one another for eons. Or as slowly and powerfully as an ancient redwood tree, growing over the centuries. Just look at the ever-expanding covenant of God s love from Genesis to Revelation! As we come together each week and listen, we open ourselves to the knowledge that God really is at work changing us and drawing us closer. It may come as we sit at table with someone new who is struggling to find their way, or it may come as we eat the bread and drink the cup on Sunday morning. In this sacred space, we come together to share a meal, share our stories, and listen. Even though these simple actions may not appear to have a massive impact they somehow miraculously give us renewed life. Here we encounter and are renewed by the wondrous steadfast love of God. Whatever our concerns, whatever our experiences of life, during these sacred moments we slowly come to realize God is with us; not absent but present in loving faithfulness. And we come to realize that it is this God who in Christ promises to journey with us to the end of our lives and beyond. Come on Saturday mornings. Come on Sunday mornings and hear the stories both ancient and new. Come and be renewed. Then leave this place telling the miraculous story of God s love found in Jesus Christ. This is the heart of our existence. The church is not a building, but it is who we are; and a constant reminder of Whose we are and of our calling to love our neighbor with the steadfast love of God. Pastor Susan V. Mills Page 2

4 SESSION HIGHLIGHTS HIGHLIGHTS OF STATED SESSION MEETING JUNE 18, 2015: Communion was served on Sunday, June 7, 2015 to 53. The average worship attendance in June was 40. Our membership roll remains at 39 members. A First Aid / CPR / Defibrillator certification class will be offered to church family and friends, at a cost of $25 per person, on August 26 th from Noon to 4:00pm. Scholarships will be available from our Scholarship / Campership Fund for those wishing to take the class but unable to pay. A Fall Bible Study class is planned for Wednesday mornings, October 28 through December 16, 2015, entitled Advent Conspiracy. Judy Carey, Christian Education Elder, will lead the class. The HymnalPlus music system has arrived and people are learning how to program it for use during Sunday morning worship. Community Remembrance Margaret Ann Fetterolf Old and new friends, as well as friends she never met, gathered to remember Margaret Ann Fetterolf on May 17. Many of those present said they felt her spirit that afternoon; a spirit of love, joy, and hospitality that she shared with everyone she met. A "light meal" was served, and in "Margaret Ann-style," the food table was overflowing. Patty Gewalt remembered the gift baskets Margaret Ann prepared for newcomers to our church. Patty lovingly created mini welcome baskets with flowers and treats for each table. These were given to one person at each table (a sticker identifying one person was placed inside each paper napkin) just like Margaret Ann used to do. A special blessing -- the three eldest ladies present "won" a basket -- Esther, Clara, and Barbara! Chris Chase read Margaret Ann's obituary, Dale read her daughter Janice's eulogy, and special memories were shared by many, including: Cookie, Martha, Clara, Meeja, Jo Nightingale, Louis Maxfield, Jan & Ron Wilcut, Karla Cottom, Rick Booth, and others. Norma played her ukulele and sang I ve Got A Mansion Just Over The Hilltop, a favorite song of Margaret Ann's. Thank you to all who came, and joined in the laughter and tears as we remembered a very dear friend who lived a life honoring her beloved Lord. --Cookie, Martha, and Dale **************************************** Waldorf Salad Margaret Ann s recipe 2 Lbs. Red Delicious Apples 4 Cups thinly sliced celery 2 Cups chopped walnuts 2 Cups dark seedless raisins Mayonnaise to taste Juice of one lemon With fork mix mayonnaise with lemon juice. Crunchy Asian Salad (from Pat Picotte) 1 envelope Good Seasons Italian Dressing Mix (small) ½ c. sugar 2 T. soy sauce 2 packages (3 oz.) ramen noodle mix (any flavor) 2 packages (16 oz.) coleslaw blend 4 green onions, sliced ½ c. dry roasted sunflower kernels ½ c. sliced almonds, toasted (I put them in 275 degree oven for minutes, more if desired) Prepare dressing mix as directed Stir in sugar and soy sauce Break apart noodles, place in large bowl. Reserve seasoning packet for another use. Add coleslaw blend, onions, sunflower kernels, and almonds to noodles; mix lightly. Add dressing, toss to coat. SERVE IMMEDIATELY. TIP: If serving the salad later, then keep out the dressing, noodles, sunflowers, and almonds, and add them just before serving. This way, noodles and nuts stay crunchy. 3/4 c. Sugar 1 c. Soy sauce Ginger (about 1" length of root, sliced thin or grated) Garlic (2 cloves, minced) ********************* Teriyaki Sauce (recipe from a Japanese friend in Hawaii) Stir together until most of sugar is dissolved. Put meat or chicken along with sauce in zip-lock bag, so it's easy to turn over every hour or so. Marinate 3-4 hours for beef steaks, overnight for chicken. You can also slice steak thin, marinate the strips, then thread them on wooden skewers for teri-beef on a stick. Charlie Hare hard at work keeping the church grounds looking beautiful!
