3 3 First Presbyterian Church March 2018 CLERK S CORNER At its stated meeting in February, Session: Heard that during the past month, the pastor: Averaged 45 hours a week worked, roughly in the office. Served Communion on February 4 th. Served Home Communion on February 13 th to 9 people. Attended Deacons, Christian Ed, Hospitality, Deacons, Communications, Dream Grant, CE, Finance, Mission, and Worship meetings. Held PAX (Parents of Young Children) at his house. Moderated Midway Parish Annual Meeting (Presbytery). Moderated Midway Parish Session Meeting (Presbytery). Assisted with Set Up for Greater Grand Forks Symphony Orchestra. Assisted with Orchestra Concert. Assisted with the Annual Love Feast. Assisted with preparation of Annual Reports for Annual Meeting. PRESBYTERY Attended CPL Pod meeting in Devils Lake February 1 st. Attended Men s Breakfast. Held a Mission Trip Planning Meeting. Finished Labeled sermon series (January). Implemented Fearless sermon series (February). Planning Fearless sermon series (March). Heard the Christian Education Committee: Discussed the need for another New Member Class. Designated World Vision for the children s offering mission project. Will plan an Easter scavenger hunt. Is planning VBS. The theme is Rolling River Rampage. Heard the Communications Committee: Is planning a float for the Potato Bowl Parade. Is planning Herald advertising for Easter Service. Heard the Finance Committee: Alerus Representative Matt Zimmer met with committee to discuss the current state of First Presbyterian Church Endowment investments. Heard the Dream Grant Committee: Voted to fund $1000 from the Dream Grant to make the traversing wall permanent. Reviewed rough draft for the Faith and fitness event to slot and readjust events. Session normally meets the fourth Thursday of most months at 7:00 p.m.; the next stated Session meeting is scheduled for 22 March Members with concerns or ideas are encouraged to bring them to a Session member who can help ensure the appropriate committee gets an opportunity to work on the issue. Heard the Hospitality Committee: Is planning another Music on the Edge for Sunday, April 15. Will be serving the Retreat March 17. Heard the Mission Committee: Is on the schedule for mission trip to Houston, TX first week of June. Is planning a breakfast fundraiser for the mission trip on Palm Sunday, March 25. Heard the Worship Committee: Is planning Holy week services, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and two Easter. Is purchasing a video license. Heard the Building and Grounds Committee Is planning a permanent Traversing Wall which will also be part of the Samurai Soldier course. Is planning the Samurai Soldier Course for the Faith and Fitness event. The Labyrinth is Returning this Holy Week (Sanctuary open Tues - Thur, 8am - 8pm) On Monday, March 26th, our congregation will be turning our sanctuary into a meditative setting with the labyrinth set up for people to use throughout Holy Week. A labyrinth is a walking meditation and a path of prayer. It has only one path that leads from the outer edge to the center. There are no tricks to it and no dead ends. Unlike a maze where you lose your way, the labyrinth is a spiritual tool that can help you find your way. We invite you to visit us any time this Holy Week to enjoy our labyrinth.

6 6 First Presbyterian Church March 2018 Good Friday This year for Good Friday, we will witness a modern day drama titled This Present Darkness. We will hear from eight present day characters as they wrestle with the darkness present in their lives. The night concludes with the darkest moment in all of scripture; the death of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The light we will witness on Easter morning will be all the brighter in contrast to the darkness found on this Good Friday night. We hope you will join us. Maundy Thursday This year for Maundy Thursday, we will join Jesus in the upper room as we sit around table with each other and reflect on the Last Supper. We will then move into the garden to walk the labyrinth, meditate, and pray as we reflect on Jesus night of anguish in the Garden of Gethsemane. We invite you to join us for this night of prayer and reflection as we prepare our hearts and minds for the death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

7 7 First Presbyterian Church March 2018 Illustrated Children s Ministry This Lenten season, many of you might have noticed the huge coloring pages on the tables near the church library. This is an amazing intergenerational activity for our congregation. When churches use the coloring posters, people of all ages sit down to color, engage in conversation, and enjoy doing something fun and creative as they share fellowship together. The scripture-based coloring pages are an easy way to interest and engage all ages in the scripture stories, while also providing the added benefits of art therapy. Creating art has a variety of mental, physical health, and spiritual benefits including managing stress, reducing anxiety, and increasing concentration. You are invited to grab a colored pencil and join in the artistic creativity whenever you are able. Eco-Palms This year Frist Presbyterian Church of Grand Forks is using Eco- Palms for Palm Sunday. Eco-Palms promote social justice by providing a higher price for their fair trade palms improving their income. Harvesting palms is an important source of income but gatherers have traditionally received a low price. Eco-Palms promote environmental stewardship by protecting natural forests. Palms are sustainably harvested and managed protecting the palms and the forests they need for shade.
