2 From The Pastor s Pen Susan V. Mills What a wonderful week-end celebration we had March 20 th -22 nd, honoring all those in our church and broader community who contributed of their time, talents, and treasure to ensure the Community Kitchen was finally completed! On Friday evening we hosted an Art Gallery / Desert Bar, featuring artists Justin Hall, Gary Herd and Senitila McKinley. One of the individuals who attended thanked us for putting on such an elegant event! He said, There has never been anything like this in Waldport...please do it again! On Saturday morning, we hosted the Saturday Community Breakfast, and attendees enjoyed fresh roasted asparagus, scrambled eggs, bacon and home made coffee cake. Everyone was delighted! Saturday evening we hosted the Donor Dinner, and many tired and tried troops rallied to prepare amazing appetizers, a spaghetti dinner with salad and French bread, followed by a choice between an Oreo Cookie Mousse, or a chocolate torte with raspberry and crème anglaise sauce. Thank heaven for the Job Corps crew that arrived to help serve at the eleventh hour! We so very much appreciated their energy and efficient help not only serving, but assisting in clean-up. After appetizers, several members of the community spoke about why they volunteer their time at the Community Kitchen (either at Saturday Community Breakfast or Tuesday night Read & Feed) when there are so many other venues where they could volunteer. It was heartwarming to hear how they originally came to give something to the community, but found that they had received so much more through the relationships that have been built over time with other volunteers and the people who attend. We were also delighted to have Wally High, one of our Saturday Community Breakfast regulars, read us a couple of his original poems. On Sunday after worship, we hosted an all-church potluck and hosted a forum with Justin Hall, one of the featured artists. Justin shared how his Parable series were created for his thesis project at art school, and how his review group was a panel of people who were radically opposed to the Gospel and ready to tear his project apart. However, after sharing his viewpoint, several of them asked if they could come to their group and make a presentation. He had managed to make the Good News of Christ come alive through this amazing art work. May we find new and creative ways to share the Good News with all whom we meet. Yours for an exciting Eastertide, Pastor Susan Ana Newman & Elizabeth contemplate Justin Hall s Salt & Light Parable Earl & Claire Johnson, and Meeja Hutson at the Donor Dinner Pastor Susan, and Jerry Caldwell at the Donor Dinner Page 2

6 INTRODUCING NEW MEMBERS Fran & Scott Perkins Fran and Scott Perkins were married on October 23, 1964 in a Presbyterian Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. We have lived in South Dakota, Washington, California and Oregon. Scott attended the University of Washington and graduated in 1972 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Fran attended Central Washington University and graduated in 1993 with a degree in Law and Justice. We have four children, two boys and two girls. They are Yolanda, Scott, Jr., Harlan and Robyn. Three live in Washington State and one in California. We have nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. Scott retired from Boeing in We found our Waldport home and moved from a busy Seattle to a one stoplight town! We love the ocean and serenity it offers, may God allow us to serve and marvel at his wonders for years to come. Angel Denson I am Angel Denson and I have lived in Waldport most of my life. As a young child I lived in Alaska for a few years. But returned here to be near my mothers family. I graduated from Waldport High School in I started community college after graduation and started working on an Associates of Arts degree. I put college on hold and had a child. When he was in elementary school I went back to college and got my Bachelors Degree in Early Education. A few months after getting my degree I started working at a preschool part time. But I needed a second job to make ends meet. That is when I came to work at the church as the janitor. I started attending this church on a regular basis a few months after starting my work here. I felt that I needed to put my life back together. I am a firm believer that things happen for a reason and I know in my heart that I am where I am supposed to be. Jason Hettervig Jason Paul Hettervig was born in Oregon City, Oregon, 36 years ago. I went to Ukiah High School in Ukiah, Oregon, graduating with a class of 14 students. Then off to Eastern University and I didn t know really what for...but ended up going to school for Fire Protection and Construction Management. I ended up twisting pipe wrenches, training apprentices and watching the clock for 15 years. One day I realized I was done! I knew there was something better for me out there somewhere. Now I am in this little gem of a town called Waldport where I fell in love with the spirit of Jesus and all his followers...and I know they adore me! I love this church, love the building and love to worship. I am very honored to be accepted by this little beige church in Waldport, Oregon. Page 6

7 Women s Lunch Out (or In...as the case may be) On the first Tuesday of April, April 7 th, the women of the church will be meeting at the church for a Zentangle Art Class with Rosie Hill, from 10:00am to 12:Noon. Bring a sack lunch, and we will stay after class for a brown bag luncheon, conversation, and sharing of our Zentangle Tiles. The cost of the class is $30, which will fully equip you for future Zentangling! You will walk away with a Zentangle Art Bag, pen, pencil and smudging tool, two completed tiles and many more tiles on which to tangle. Come and join us for our monthly outing. It s an informal time of fun and fellowship where we will learn something new. Everyone is welcome! Bring a friend...she ll be glad you did! March Women s Lunch Out was at Georgie s Beachside Grill: Sue Adams, Barbara Hare, Lyle Seaman, Sherri Jubie, Sylvia Selden, Angel Denson, with Pastor Susan as photographer. Examples of Zentangle tiles. All that is required to do a Zentangle tile is knowing how to draw a straight line, a C shape, an S shape, a period, and an oval. That s it! Believe it or not, this meditational art form all comes together under the amazingly encouraging instruction of Rosie Hill. The Amazing Job Corp team who rode in like the Calvary at the Donor Dinner...they served, prepped desserts and helped clean up! Quite a crew to aid our own hard working church and community volunteers! View of the Art Gallery and the new Community Kitchen. Page 7
