2 From The Pastor s Pen Susan V. Mills I had written the Pastor s Pen and felt comfortable that all the details for the newsletter had been nailed down before I was to leave for the Presbytery meeting in Portland. However, the tragedy in Charleston, South Carolina kept tugging at my heart during prayer that morning. It seemed to me that pausing for a moment to pray in my busy schedule was not enough. I also needed to encourage others to pause and pray for the families and friends of our brothers and sisters in Christ who were killed. I was born in Aiken, South Carolina, and so I wondered if perhaps that was part of the reason I was so deeply impacted by the tragedy. As I prayed I remembered the state motto of South Carolina is Dum Spiro Spero, which means While I breathe, I hope. In a world so bruised and broken, the motto calls me to continue to pray for these my sisters and brothers who will undoubtedly struggle to walk through the valley of the shadow of death each time they enter their place of worship. Our brothers and sisters in Christ had gathered together in prayer, and one came into their midst and sat with them for one hour as they prayed; and yet he was still able to carry out this horrific, senseless slaughter. This terrible tragedy will undoubtedly be exploited and politicized in a thousand different ways in the days ahead. I can only pray and plead that we will resist the urge to see this as proof of some sort of argument that must be maintained. Instead may we name it for what it is: another manifestation of evil that continues to run through our midst. Scripture identifies this evil as the stain of sin. Rather than becoming numb to the nightmare, may we choose to join our brothers and sisters in Christ in Charleston by praying for peace, forgiveness, love and grace. May we breathe deeply of the Spirit and hold on to hope. For if we do not, this sort of monstrous, mindless, madness will be the continuing legacy we leave to future generations. But if we stop and breathe and listen to the call of the Spirit to be ministers of reconciliation. Even now, I believe that in some mysterious way, these nine precious people are calling us all to work for racial reconciliation, peace and justice in our hearts, homes and communities. I think it is no coincidence that this week s lectionary passage is about Christ asleep in the stern of the boat in the midst of the storm. In the story the disciples wake the sleeping Christ with the cry, Don t you even care that we are perishing? Christ responds, Peace! Be Still! I believe Christ s words are spoken not so much to the boisterous wind and waves, but to the doubting disciples who are overcome by the violence of the world. So overcome that they forgot to breathe and see that Christ was there with them all the time. This same Christ is with us today. May we demonstrate to a watching world that we have One who is with us in the midst of the storm who stills us and brings us peace. While I breathe, I hope. There is still hope in this world as long as there is Christ s love. There is Love as long as the people of God gather together and pray, and choose once again to move out into this broken and bruised but beautiful world with the Good News that God is indeed with us and Christ s love is eternal. We sing the song each week, Go now in peace, never be afraid, God will go with you each hour of every day. Go now in faith, steadfast strong and true, know God will guide you in all you do. Go now in love and show you believe, reach out to others so all the world can see. God will be there...go now in peace, in faith, and in love. May it be so! Christ s peace, Pastor Susan V. 4 SESSION HIGHLIGHTS HIGHLIGHTS OF STATED SESSION MEETING MAY 21, 2015: Communion was served on Sunday, May 3, 2015 to 53. The average worship attendance in May was 45. CPCW is eligible to recommend a Ruling Elder to be considered for nomination and possible election by the Presbytery as a Ruling Elder Commissioner to the 222 nd General Assembly in Portland, June 18-25, A response is required to the Presbytery by June 25 th. A name will be submitted before the deadline. Our new web site will use Bridge Element as our web page host. Approval given for the purchase of an automated external defibrillator LIFEPAK CR Plus with wall mount and sign for installation in the sanctuary. Approval given for the Hymnal Plus music system to be purchased for use in our worship services and special programs in the Fellowship Hall and Sea Aire Assisted Living Facility. Marcia Wilcox Retires Many thanks to Marcia Wilcox for her many years of faithful service to the music and choir program at Community Presbyterian Church! How can we possibly say thanks for the selection of beautiful preludes, offertories and postludes? And then there were the beautiful anthems and the special services such as Tenebrae and Blue Christmas. She was a God-send and came at a time that we needed her most. We shall be eternally grateful for her influence and contribution in recruiting choir members, not to mention...whipping us all into shape! Prayers of thanks go out to our God for her and her willingness to use her talents to help build up the church. Blessings, Marcia, in your retirement! 6 Vacation Bible School VBS Will Be Here Before You Know It! Community Presbyterian Church of Waldport, with the help of Yachats Community Presbyterian Church, is sponsoring Vacation Bible School August 10 14, All children between Kindergarten and the 5 th Grade are invited to attend our G-Force VBS this summer. There will be lots of music, games, crafts, science projects, stories and snacks every day. Needed supplies for VBS: Natural materials (moss, small pinecones, small sticks and pieces of driftwood, small rocks) Travel size toiletries Foil pie tins Gallon size freezer zip-lock bags Oatmeal containers (like Quaker) small or large. Your donations are welcome! Registration is underway at this time. You may pick up registration forms at the church during regular office hours. 10 Community Life Future Events! During the summer time most churches slow down...that doesn t seem to be the case for Community Presbyterian Church Waldport! By the time this newsletter is printed, members and friends will have survived another Beachcomber s Day Rummage Sale (Have you noticed that the Pastor always seems to be away at a Presbytery meeting during the summer Rummage Sale?!) You will also find the pictures of the beautiful Hawaiian Read & Feed that was held during June. Plans are in place for another exciting Read & Feed in July. Stay tuned! Women of the church have been Zentangl-ing and they don t seem to be ready to give up this new meditational art form. During June they created tangles based on an ocean theme. Another class is being planned for the third Tuesday in August. You won t want to miss out! Not only that, but many of our ladies and gentlemen are busy gearing up for Vacation Bible School: games, crafts and snacks are being planned, science experiments are being tested, and I hear that Judy is furiously learning new and exciting songs to get the kids moving. There are the new worship team members who are working as technicians on our new church worship system. With Marcia Wilcox s retirement, we were in a quandary about how to plan for music each and every Sunday. Denise McPherson did some research and identified the HymnalPlus and presented it as an idea to Marcia and Pastor Susan. After looking at all our options, the HymnalPlus seemed to be the wisest choice at this point in time. We will be utilizing it in worship beginning the first Sunday in July. There will be bugs to be worked out so we are asking for your patience as we learn the system and adapt it to our worship style. It is a system that has over 1,700 hymns in the database. There are several hundred musical styles to choose from when playing those hymns (organ, piano, strings, orchestra, etc.) Jason Hettervig, Scott Perkins, Tom Rasmussen, Lyle Seaman, and Marcia Wilcox will be working together to learn the system and get it set up for worship. The beauty of the system is that if there is someone who wants to play a special prelude, postlude or offertory, they don t have to feel the pressure of doing all the music for worship that particular Sunday. They can simply focus on their special musical offering and the HymnalPlus will be utilized for the remainder of the worship service. Baily will still be able to play the offertory when she has a new piece to share! Mike Carey is pulling together a First Aid, CPR, Defibrillator Class tentatively scheduled for August 26th stay tuned for details. We had an heart incident recently during worship and we want to be more prepared in the future. The Session approved the purchase of a defibrillator to be installed in the sanctuary. We will need to get people certified to utilize this new piece of equipment. If you are interested, please let Mike know. Class size will be a limited to nine participants due to the training equipment required for instruction. After the recent shooting in South Carolina, Mike is also going to be offering a Refuse to be a Victim course tentatively scheduled for sometime this summer. More details to follow! We are also planning a Women s Retreat to take place in mid-november. We are looking at taking a group of women to Cannon Beach and having a Soul Collage Week-end. Stay tuned for more details on this relaxing and inspiring week-end. And finally, Judy Carey is planning an Advent Study to begin October 28th, entitled, Advent Conspiracy and followed up with The Purpose of Christmas. So many new opportunities to get involved at CPCW! The children will be learning in Vacation Bible School, God is always at work around us and God is inviting us to join in the exciting work of expanding the Kingdom and sharing God s love. Page 10

Simply make a notation on the memo line for Waldport Food Share. Food Share is currently experiencing a shortage of food and having to turn folks away. Our June donation to Waldport Food Share 70 pounds of food. Please remember to bring in your cans and other non-perishable items! THANK YOU to all who helped out in so many ways to make out rummage sale and taco feed a big success. The taco feed seemed to be a hit as we completely ran out of food. Next time we will plan on more! I don t want to miss anyone who helped in any way, so I won t name names. You know who you are. Kudos to each of you. My heartfelt thanks.
