1 The Messenger PUBLISHED MONTHLY FOR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF SAINT ANDREWS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, TOPEKA, KANSAS November 2017 Volume 39, No. 11 Doorstep It is amazing how fast 2017 has gone by! There have been many tragedies in our country in just the last few months. So many people are suffering, and in need around our nation! Our hearts go out to all of them as we keep working here at home to help our neighbors in need.
2 The beginning of the holiday season is now upon us! This year Doorstep will again adopt 250 households from the Christmas Bureau. There are over 700 individuals within these households, and we provide a Christmas for them all. This year the Christmas Bureau will take applications for 8 days between October 24 th and November 4 th. Sign up is for our neighbors in need who cannot afford to provide a Christmas for their families. These are families and individuals who meet the federal poverty guidelines. They are working, but not making a living wage; they are disabled, they are struggling to provide the most basic of needs for their families, and need a little extra help at Christmas. Our Christmas Store is a unique experience and different from anything else we do at Doorstep! We need your help with gifts, monetary donations to purchase the food, and volunteers to help during the five day process. The Store is such an uplifting experience you cannot help but feel good about your time spent volunteering there! Please mark your calendars for December 10 th 14 th, and watch for our flyers on specific days and times for volunteering. Doorstep s Christmas Store is possible each year in large part because of the generosity of our member congregations and their members. Neighbors helping neighbors is what Doorstep was founded on, and what we continue to do today! In Memoriam - Frances Ufheil Our beloved Aunt Frances passed away on September 23rd at the age of 104. Her memorial service was on October 2nd at the McCrite Health Care Center. McCrite Chaplin, Rev. Matt Benorden, officiated at the service. Inurnment was at Fredonia City Cemetery. 2
3 Men's and Ladies' Groups The Men's and Ladies' Groups met on Friday, October 20th, at Banjos, sharing a meal and fellowship. We will meet at Banjos again on November 17th at 11:30. All are welcome. Ham and Bean Dinner Successful Thanks to all who came out to support our Ham and Bean Dinner. We received $1, to help continue our church's programs and mission. Thanks to all who donated the food items and those who worked to make it successful. Potluck Dinners The Fellowship Committee has decided that our future pot luck dinners will be only on the 5th Sunday of those months that have five Sundays. There will be no pot luck or dinner in November or December, so the next one would be scheduled in April of November 2017 LECTIONARY READINGS November 1 - All Saints Day-Revelation 7:9-17; Psalm 34:1-10, 22; 1 John 3:1-3; Matthew 5:1-12 November 5-22nd Sunday after Pentecost-Joshua 3:7-17; Psalm 107:1-7, 33-37; 1 Thessalonians 2:9-13; Matthew 23:1-12 November 12-23rd Sunday after Pentecost-Joshua 24:1-3a, 14-25; Psalm 78:1-7; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Matthew 25:1-13 November 19-24th Sunday after Pentecost-Judges 4:1-7; Psalm 123; 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11; Matthew 25:14-30 November 26-Christ the King-Ezekiel 34:11-16; 20-24; Psalm 100 or Psalm 95:1-7a; Ephesians 1:15-23; Matthew 25:
