2 Our prayers and actions to those who need God s Presence today! For many, September 2017 would be the most difficult time in their life in TX, FL, and Puerto Rico. It is our call to support our brothers and sisters in facing difficulties. With prayers and actions, the United Methodist Women have made this call tangible in our faith community. A dozen plus Cleaning Buckets and health kits will be delivered to UMCOR mission in October. God pays me so well to do HIS good works! How could I ever say no? I am so grateful for all of the resources God has given me to do his good works! He always provides. He always encourages. He is always there. God gives us all gifts. He has trained me to be a disciple and speak the word of the Lord fearlessly. I encourage everyone to find those gifts and capitalize on your strengths to do good works. Study the Bible with a work group. Read the many works written by knowledgeable scholars such as Tinker, Tailor, Missionary? and find out what you are good at. My Grandmother once told me to stay busy and never stop doing what I am good at. Great advice! We have always performed outreach in my family. Even though I help with some fulfillment projects, I prefer to go where the people are and meet them face to face. I carry a case of water, Hotties for cold hands, and gloves in my car during the winter. Most of God s children found on the streets are suffering from malnutrition and it affects their mind, body and soul. Imagine being able to uplift their spirits by just talking with them and acknowledging they exist. Most of the homeless feel like they have been forgotten. Passersby try not to look them in the eye. It is as if they have fallen through the cracks and one kind gesture could make all the difference in their lives. If you are not putting yourself in harm s way, try talking to them and offering what you can. I also go on missions and I am a certified, trained Emergency Response Team member for the United Methodist Church in the PNW Conference. I represent the Tabor Heights community with my team when we are deployed to areas that need strength, hope and helping hands. We offer emotional and spiritual support, as well as, physical labor wherever we are called. We will be leaving for TX Oct 20th and I am called to work the Corpus Christi, Victoria and Houston area with the SW ERT in the name of the Lord. 3 Banzai garden The service will focus on the celebration of the ministry of all lay at Tabor Heights. Dorothy Glynn will share her story during the worship. Did you notice it is fall? Marvin Doering has been dedicating his time throughout the summer taking care of two fine trees. It is about caring & hospitality for ALL God s Creation. Please give him your hugs and words of appreciation. DIY Holiday Craft Festival (known as the Advent Craft Festival) Now is the time to be thinking about what you would like to do at the Advent Festival, whose new name will be DIY Holiday Craft Festival. It will be held December 3rd after church. Please contact Lois Lee ( ) if you would like to help with the chili luncheon. Send an to Linda or Barbara to help with a craft table, set-up or clean-up. Most importantly, think about who you wish to give the GIFT of an invitation. 4 Vision Board Finance & roof update. At the end of August we have covered 66% of the year. Our church budget is is looking very good so far. Giving is at 62% and our expense is 62%. We have raised $9,000 of the $15,000 we expect to need for the repair of the fireplace room. This repair will follow the replacement of the roof. At this time the roofing company is about 6 to 8 weeks from being available to start work on the roof. The Board chose ABC roofing biased on their past work for Tabor Heights, they replaced the Annex and Steeple roofs in the past, and their capabilities. We looked at our roofing companies that had the expertise in very large flat roofs and could install the newer membrane sheet covering. ABC came out on top and the other company s had similar time tines to get the job done. The existing roof has been re-tarped to protect from rain until the work begins. 4

5 Book Review Just Like Jesus by Max Lucado God loves you just the way you are, but he refuses to leave you that way. More than anything, he wants you to be just like Jesus. Max I have had this book since spring in 2014 in Korean translation. It was a gift from John for some occasion. I read it at once, even though this book is more likely a devotion book which is I better take a pause for reflection and meditation. The book drew me into the text like a magnet, so I had to order in English which is original version. The author is very famous through all generations, so I do not even need to mention about him. The way his writing is gentle and inviting. His interpretation of the stories from the Bible and his experience is absolutely realistic and applicable to our own situations. It was more likely he told you the stories rather than you read the book. This is a paragraph from the book which would be a good bit of taste from the book. When my daughter Jenna was a toddler, I used to take her to a park not far from our apartment. One day as she was playing in a sandbox, an ice-cream salesman approached us. I purchased her a treat, and when I turned to give it to her, I saw her mouth was full of sand. Where I intended to put a delicacy, she had put dirt. Did I love her with dirt in her mouth? Absolutely. Was she any less my daughter with dirt in her mouth? Of course not. Was I going to allow her to keep the dirt in her mouth? No way. I loved her right where she was, but I refused to leave here there. I carried her over to the water fountain and washed out her mouth. Why? Because I love her. 6 FROM YOUR LAY LEADER By Joanne Dobrinski Pastor John shared with us from Matthew 25 beginning with verse 31 where Jesus is talking about the Kingdom of Heaven where the blessed will find their home. He pointed out that we see others in God s presence and also as we see ourselves. Three college students received scholarships this term: Kyle Dobrinski, Nicholas Morrell, and Sean Leary Tinio. We are pleased to be able to award monies to help them in furthering their education. We discussed the Emergency Response Team (ERT) program and support for Trish Dawson as she plans to go as a trained volunteer to assist in Texas this month. We encourage our congregation to support her in any way possible. Roof update: Weather permitting this will begin in 6-10 weeks but before December. Did you know that this needs to be done by a commercial roofer not one that does home roofing because of the type of roof being flat and that there are only three roofers in Portland that do this? Also, they do not bid against one another. Garden update: There not be a prayer structure but a prayer box. More roses will be added to the memorial rose garden. There will also be an arch added. Our intern, Mia, is in the office on Tuesdays. The Holy Spirit has led her into small group ministry and beginning new groups with young people here. On Wednesdays, she hosts a Mom s prayer group in the conference room. She is learning a lot and happy to be here at Tabor Heights. The Vision Board continues to work on their roll as they lead our congregation. They are working on creating more teams, prepared pastor s compensation for the Charge Conference, submitted an article for this Messenger, heard a report from our bookkeeper, Susan Flores, and plan to do an audit exchange with another church. The October 8 Charge Conference location has been moved to the Lents Tongan Fellowship Church at 4600 SE 97. Times are 4:00 to 6:00. John, Mia, and Katie Lohkamp attended the Safe Sanctuary training recently held. Plans are to continue to make our congregation aware of this policy and its importance.
