2 From The Pastor s Pen Susan V. Mills Have you noticed the brown umbrella that has been placed in the planter in our Church Memorial Garden? It was purchased in sponsorship of the Shelter Me project. Shelter Me was a project created by the children in the Seashore Family Literacy after-school program. Many of the children have experienced homelessness first-hand. They wanted to make the community more aware of those in our community who are homeless, who need help with essential services and shelter. The children dreamed of a community where all people felt safe and protected. When thinking about a symbol of community and shelter, an umbrella came to mind. They began to paint umbrellas, and then they asked for more to be donated for painting and the community responded. Umbrellas began to pop up in businesses and churches all around Waldport. The children then drafted a proclamation for consideration by the Waldport City Council asking for the establishment of Shelter Me Week as a way of creating awareness and mindfulness of the homeless families living in Waldport. This year the children returned to the City Council and asked that the third week of May be set aside as the official week for raising homeless awareness in Waldport. They also drafted a proclamation for consideration by the Lincoln County Commissioners to raise awareness of homelessness countywide and the County Commissioners approved it May 21st! Wooden umbrellas were painted for sponsors to purchase to show their support of Shelter Me Week with funds raised to be used by the children of Seashore in helping provide essential services. A Blessing Service was held in our sanctuary to kick off Shelter Me week with Father Tom Layton and Rev. Susan Church assisting with the service, our own Mary VanderMeiden playing the violin on one of the hymns, and the Women of Note provided special music. It was such a beautiful demonstration of unity. Several people captured the vision the children shared for building and strengthening our community, and several events were planned throughout the week: Safety Awareness Training, Child Abuse Awareness (Darkness to Light), CPR / AED / First Aid Training, Disaster Preparedness, All Body Awareness Health Clinic, Computer Tech Training, and a Resource Fair. To further build community relationships, we hosted a Common Bowl Dinner where several soups were served along with bread and a dessert. All funds raised were for the Community Kitchen at the church. We also hosted a Polynesian Dinner to close the week. We hope that you were able to join in on one or more of the events. Our name Community Presbyterian Church reminds us that we are to embody community and to heed Christ s call to reach out to the most vulnerable with the love of Christ. May we continually ask one another how well we are doing at creating a welcoming community in worship, at Read & Feed, at Saturday Breakfast, and the other events we host. Christ s teachings about reaching out to those in need are found in Matthew 25:34-40: Come, my Father has given you His blessing. Receive the kingdom God has prepared for you since the world was made. I was hungry, and you gave Me food. I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink. I was alone and away from home, and you invited Me into your house. I was without clothes, and you gave Me something to wear. I was sick, and you cared for Me. I was in prison, and you visited Me. Then the good people will answer, Lord, when did we see You hungry and give You food, or thirsty and give You something to drink? When did we see You alone and away from home and invite You into our house? When did we see You without clothes and give You something to wear? When did we see You sick or in prison and care for You? Then the King will answer, I tell you the truth, anything you did for even the least of My people here, you also did for Me.... I tell you the truth, anything you refused to do for even the least of My people here, you refused to do for Me. Thank you to everyone who participated in making Shelter Me Week a wonderful success. May we continue to be known as a church where everyone is welcome and the love of Christ is demonstrated. Christ s peace, Susan V. Mills Page 2

4 Building Community! Tanoshikatta Desu! Our Read & Feed Dinner in May celebrated Japanese Children s Day. We made traditional Koi windsocks, learned to use chopsticks, heard some stories and learned a few Japanese phrases. We even has two wonderful ladies, Jan and Carla, bring their Taiko drum! As always, we shared a great meal with all of our friends. Children try their hand at playing the Taiko Drum Andrew gets a little help with his windsock string Senitila teaches children to use chopsticks Dale enjoys sharing Japanese culture and stories at Read & Feed. 5 Shelter Me Week Kick-Off & Common Bowl Dinner Visiting with friends and enjoying the soup selections! Women of Note sing at the Blessing Service to kick off Shelter Me Week. As the kick off for Shelter Me Week, we held an ecumenical blessing service in our sanctuary. Contributions were made by Mayor Susan Woodruff, Rick Hill, Jasmine Nichols, Father Thomas Layton, Rev. Susan Church, and Pastor Susan Mills. Wonderful music was provided by Women of Note. Following the service Seashore Family Literacy hosted a Common Bowl Dinner in the Fellowship Hall. The dinner was a fundraiser for our new community kitchen. We served four varieties of homemade soup, lots of fresh bread, Colorful treats made by the ladies for the Read & Feed Dinner Connie Hunter, Pat and other friends from the Community Breakfast crowd join us at Read & Feed and the Common Bowl Dinners. 6 Fundraiser During Beachcomber Days This year, for Beachcomber Days we are planning on holding a Spring Roll Feed and BAG (Basement, Attic, Garage) Sale. The Tamale and BAG Sale we held last year was a big success and we hope to have a similar results this year. To make the sale successful, we need your help: We need people to help in the kitchen, making the Spring rolls in advance (Tuesday, May 27 th ) We need people to help to make the Asian salad and heat the Spring rolls for the event We need servers, money takers, beverage pourers and table cleaners We need people to sort, set out and price the items for the BAG sale. We need people to work the BAG sale; straightening the tables, helping customers, bagging sold items, taking money. We also need smiling faces to make people feel welcome! If you would like to help in any way, please contact Marcia Wilcox or call the church office. Let s work together to make this kitchen fundraiser as big a success as last year! A Note on Items for the BAG Sale: We are looking to keep the BAG sale more of a housewares boutique than a rummage sale, so please NO Media (cd s dvd s tapes, vhs, books, magazines) or electronics. No computers or computer parts. NO clothing or toiletries. What we DO want: glassware, dishes, kitchenware, décor items, knick knacks, linens. Ductless Heating Questions by Mike Carey What is a ductless System? A ductless system, by definition, does not use air ducts. Ductless heating systems use a wall unit connected to an outdoor heat pump to manage ambient air temperatures within a given zone of a building. Traditional heating and cooling utilizes furnaces for heating and condensers for cooling. Two separate systems that require large amounts of electricity to operate. A ductless system manages the ambient air temperature of a zone by adding heated air to the zone or removing heat from the zone. The most energy efficient method of operating a ductless system is in Auto mode where a temperature point is established and set. The ductless system will monitor ambient temperature and maintain that set point automatically. Why did we change to a ductless system? It is more energy efficient and costs less to operate than a traditional furnace and ducts. Ducts can lose up to 20% of their heat before it even reaches the room! Are we saving money? Yes! Our heating costs have gone down over 40%! It s too cold/hot, can we crank the thing up or down? Well, yes, but that will eliminate our cost savings. In order to save energy (and money) we need to keep the thermostats set at a constant temperature. It can take hours to change the temperature of a room (days for a space as large as our sanctuary). The system selects the appropriate operation mode (cool or heat) based on the room and outside temperatures. The system automatically reselects the setting at a regular interval to bring the room temperature to user setting level. If it really becomes too hot or cold for everyone, we can reset the thermostats but changing the setting every day will eat up our savings. I know this will take some getting used to, it is new technology, but I m certain we can make the change and it is indeed saving us in operating costs! Page 6
