2 The Commander-in-Chief Ill. William H. Tennant, Jr., 33 Thrice Potent Master s Corner Ronald Dalius Brethren: This fall weather has just been wonderful and I hope that all of you have enjoyed some of the Indian summer days during the recent months. This fall we have had the Lynn Brandt Memorial Golf Tournament at Reading Country Club. Fifty eight golfers played. All of the golfers enjoyed a beautiful day with their brethren and friends. We were treated very well at Reading Country Club for the golf tournament and enjoyed a great meal. I understand that we have already scheduled another tournament for next September at the same location. So if you missed the Lynn Brandt Memorial Golf Tournament this year, keep it in mind for September On October 3 rd, eighty five members gathered at the banquet room of the valley to attend the Feast of Tishri. This is the black tie dinner published in the Valley Newsletter. If you missed it, you did your self an injustice. This has become an excellent event, (both the dinner and the speakers), and is attended by Masons from several area Valleys. Attending along with the members of the Valley of Reading were Brothers from Valley of Bloomsburg and the Valley of Allentown. Attendance this year increased 25 more than the dinner in October The speaker for the evening was Ill Brother S. Eugene Herritt, 33 rd, Right Worshipful Senior Grand Warden of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania. Brethren: We are now in high gear for the Fall and Winter Season at the Valley. Rehearsals have begun and everyone involved is juggling their schedules to make themselves available for the degrees they are cast in. If you are not participating in any degrees or doing work behind the scenes, you should attend the Reunion on Saturday, November 22. Remember, the deadline for a petition is November 14 th. Now is the time to speak to your Blue Lodge members about the rewards of membership in AASR. I have no doubt that each of you knows at least one or two men who would not only be an asset to AASR but who would also benefit from membership. Holiday Happenings is scheduled for the first two weekends in December (Saturdays Dec 6 th & 13 th and Sundays Dec 7 th & 14 th ). The Lodge of Perfection is responsible for supplying the cast for the Live Nativity Scene on the first night, December 6th. Current and past officers and their families participate in this ever popular attraction at the Happenings. Holiday Happenings is open to the public and has something for young and old alike, so invite your friends and family to come out and enjoy the food, trains, clowns, balloons, music, motorcycles, and many other attractions that take place. Be well my Brethren Hope to see all of you at the fall reunion, November 22 nd. Remember: PETITIONS-PETITIONS-PETITIONS. Make the 2014 fall reunion one to remember. See You at YOUR REUNION. Valley Notice Is a publication of the four bodies of the Valley of Reading, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry for The Northern Masonic Jurisdiction And is the official notice of meetings, Events and activities of the Valley. Editor Dick Miller, 32 The Valley of Reading, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite P.O. Box 6013 West Reading, PA Phone: Fax: valley.of.reading@comcast.net 2
3 Sovereign Prince Speaks Craig Shaffer Most Wise Master s Moment Arthur Armstrong Greetings Princes; I hope this day finds you and your family well. In keeping the Brethren informed, I have to say that the Commander-in-Chief s golf outing held on Friday September 19 th was a great success. There were 52 participants, walking and carting about the links at the Reading Country Club. From the stories I heard, there were a lot of laughs, mulligans and fellowship shared that day. A big thank you needs to go to Ill. Bro. Tom Keen, 33, and Bro. Rick Heim for arranging the outing as well as all those who assisted in making a beautiful day a successful one as well. The following day, I found members of the Valley had who traveled to The Masonic Homes in Elizabethtown for Autumn Days and the dedication of the Eternal Flame in the Veterans Grove. This was a very nice affair and well attended with an estimate of 10,000 people in attendance. It was a proud moment when I located several memorial bricks that were purchased from the various bodies within the Valley, proving once again we are a Valley, willing and able to assist when called upon. As for what the future holds, let us not forget Holiday Happenings the first two weekends in December. We are looking forward to this year s additions of a new train display, decorations and entertainment. I am looking for a few men that would like to assist this venture as Santa. A complete schedule of dates, times and events are included in this newsletter. As fall fades into winter, the flurry of Masonic activity has little or no toleration for boredom. In our Valley, rehearsals eventually mature and become the reunion, with Holiday Happenings shortly thereafter. Time becomes even more valuable as we try to juggle our numerous commitments to include family, friends, and the dreaded shopping. It is times like these that many of my Brethren have heard me to inquire, Tell me again why we do this. The gold standard answer is Because we love it. And you know what? It is true, for so many reasons. Each of us have various ways to celebrate the season, but most of us feel an emptiness or a void if we don t spend time with our Brothers, and the reunion is the best time to do so. Then, we open our Cathedral doors on two chilly December weekend evenings to share the Valley of Reading Scottish Rite vision of Holiday Happenings with family, friends, and all those who enter to enjoy the many events and features of those two weekends. Let the Light from the stars of Faith, Hope, and Charity shine within all your hearts now and throughout the coming year. Many Blessings of the Season To each member of the Valley from The Knights of Rose Croix. I mentioned awhile back that we are looking for old photos, stories and memorabilia for the 100 th anniversary of the Council and Chapter bodies. Please contact me if you have anything you would like to contribute to the anniversary booklet; Bear-den@comcast.net As for a date and more details please stay tuned. In closing, we have a very busy schedule ahead of us, please try and make time for your home away from home and support your Valley and the upcoming events. 3
4 IN MEMORIAM The Valley of Reading remembers with respect the following Brethren whose deaths have been reported since the last publication of the Valley Notice. Herbert O. Zemble, MSA Lodge No. 126 April 19, 2014 Peter L. Haines Lodge No. 479 September 1, 2014 Randolph J. Leibensperger Lodge No. 377 September 2, 2014 T.T.G.O.T.G.A.O.T.U. Seventh Avenue, West Reading, Pa., on the 29th day of the Hebrew month Cheshvan, 5775 corresponding to: Saturday, November 22, 2014 The business and work will be conducted according to the program on these pages. A cordial and fraternal invitation is extended to all members of the Rite duly accredited. Your permanent membership card will admit you to all the Sessions of the Reunion and must be shown to the Tyler for admittance. Scottish Rite Scholarship Eligibility: Those meeting any of the following criteria are eligible to apply for the Abbott Scholarship program: A Scottish Rite Mason of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. A child of a Scottish Rite Mason of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, who is a high school senior or currently enrolled at an accredited college or university, who has attained a minimum grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale. A member of DeMolay, Rainbow or Jobs Daughters in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction who is a high school senior or currently enrolled at an accredited college or university, who has attained a minimum grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale. No applications will be accepted after March 31 st. By order of: Ronald J. Dalius, 32 Arthur K. Armstrong, 33 Thrice Potent Master Most Wise Master Craig W. Shaffer, 32 William H. Tennant, Jr. 33 Sovereign Prince Commander-in-Chief ATTEST: Christopher H. Tecklenburg, 33, MSA Secretary Petitions for this class will be accepted until November 14 th. A list of candidates will be available in the Scottish Rite Office beginning November 21st. SPONSOR S RESPONSIBILITY For every petitioner for the Scottish Rite degrees there are two Scottish Rite Masons on whom rests a responsibility for the proper training of that petitioner. The two Scottish Rite Masons who sign the petition have a responsibility that does not end with their signature on the petition. If you invite a guest to a gathering at your home, you make sure that he meets all your guests, and is made welcome and comfortable. Isn t the Master Mason you recommend to Scottish Rite Freemasonry entitled to the same courtesy? As his sponsor, is it not your duty to take an interest in his progress? It seems to us that it is, and that you should see to it that he fully understands the fine lessons of our degrees. If you recommend a man to the Scottish Rite, satisfy yourself that he is receiving that for which you recommended him. To do so is but a Masonic courtesy and it is also your duty as a Scottish Rite Mason. Let s all give this matter some serious consideration. It will certainly bring forth good results if you attend the conferring of the degrees at our Reunions. 4
5 HOW ABOUT YOU? When you receive your meeting notices do not cast them aside without reading them. Each one of our publications does and will contain something of interest to you. We plan some splendid features for each meeting and Reunion, and the only way you can keep yourself posted on what is going on is to read your notices. NOTICE: ALL MEMBERS We extend to you a cordial invitation to enjoy all the meals during the Reunion. BE FRATERNAL When you attend a Scottish Rite Reunion, do not sit down in a corner and expect every member to come and shake hands with you, and in case they fail to do so, complain that the members are not fraternal and lack sociability. It is no more their duty to do so than it is yours. Every member should aim to promote the fraternal spirit by saying a friendly word of greeting to the other members. Try it. You will like it. The dues are now PAST DUE. If you have not paid yours please do so NOW. SEND TO: Scottish Rite Office, 310 S. 7 th Avenue, PO Box 6013, Reading, PA Or pay by credit card by logging on to Phone: Fax: valley.of.reading@comcast.net When you pay your dues, remember your voluntary contribution to the Building Fund and the Hospitaler s Fund. 8 November 2014 Membership Message Jeff Moyer and I just returned from the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction Membership Meeting conducted at the Valley of Chicago. We learned many interesting facts about what is occurring in other Valleys. It is not surpirising that all the Valleys are struggling with the same issues. Due to declining membership and increased cost of maintaining buildings, several Valleys have sold their buildings and rent office space in an office park. We in the Valley of Reading are fortunate in that we can still maintain our beautiful facility. However can we still continue to maintain this facility if our membership goes down to 1000? Only we can determine what will be. There is no one else to blame. Supreme Council is committed to give us the tools to succeed. But what good are the workmen s tools if the skilled workmen will not use them. The plumb, the level and the square do not build the Temple. Only when in the hands of skilled workmen can the tools be used to build the Temple. To get new members we need to talk to Brothers and potential new Masons one on one. It is the personal contact that gets new members. We have a lot to offer, but unless we tell others what Freemasonry and the Scottish Rite mean to us in our lives, they will never know what they are missing. Think of what Freemasonry and the Scottish Rite mean to you and why you are a member. Write it down in a few sentences. Memorize a two to three minute statement and when you meet a potential candidate be prepared to give him your message. You may only get one chance; therefore make the best of it. Scottish Rite Core Values: Reverence for God, Integrity, Justice, Tolerance, Devotion to Country and Service to Humanity. Scottish Rite Valley of Reading THE FRATERNITY OF CHOICE. See you at the reunion! Harry E. Hackman, Jr. 33 Membership Chairman harryhackman@comcast.net MEMBERSHIP HAS ITS PRIVILEGES The Scottish Rite NMJ website offers many membership services, including: special rates on health, dental and home insurance, vacation packages, and Jos. A. Bank, just to name a few. To find out more, go to: SR VC SCOTTISH RITE VOLUNTEER COMMITTEE The Silent Workhorse of the Scottish Rite Cathedral Remember the recruiting poster of World War I, The Army wants You? Well, the same can apply to SRVC (Scottish Rite Volunteer Committee). SRVC coordinates the selling of refreshments during most public engagements held in the auditorium, by purchasing the merchandise and manning the refreshment stand during the event. The proceeds are turned over to SRVC treasurer and are used for various activities and maintenance needs for the Cathedral. The Easter Egg Hunt and the Dinner with Santa are coordinated through SRVC. Many hands make the work much more effortless than just a few. The meetings are held the 1 st Sunday of each month at 2 P.M., and usually last no more than one hour; with refreshments after the meeting. The December meeting will be held on Sunday, November 30 th at 2 P.M., and will be dedicated mostly to decorating the Scottish Rite Cathedral for Holiday Happenings. Each body should have members of their officer line present to decorate the tree representing their unit. There is much work and your help would be greatly appreciated. Your involvement would be a great way to get to know your Brothers and see who is involved in SRVC. The January meeting is planned for Sunday, January 4, 2015, 2 P.M. 8
