2 The Commander-in-Chief Ill. Herbert K. Swisher, 33 It seems as I have grown older, my schedule gets busier. There is so little time to do the things I used to do and so little time to do all of the things that I want to do. Technology has transformed our lives, and our perception of time. The information gap no longer exists. We have, if we choose, instant access to everything that happens in the world; immediate access to information, our family, friends and acquaintances that we would not have otherwise. Technology has made our lives better and at the same time more hurried. We spend more time connected to anything, everything, and everyone. Technology lets us just do more in the time we have, but I question whether it improves the quality and enjoyment of our lives. Many of my friends, having reached the point where they are fortunate enough to no longer have to work, who now having entered retirement, wonder how they ever had time to work. They claim they are as busy as ever, and their commitments to giving their time to others are just as pronounced as they have ever known. As my retirement as your Commander in Chief approaches, and my duties wind down in the next couple of months, I look forward to a more leisurely schedule, and turning to other pursuits, but I know that is an elusive or perhaps delusive dream. I already know of many things I have committed to and several things I would like to do. The quality of life and the enjoyment I have received from being connected with the folks that spend their time involved with Scottish Rite has been immeasurable, and I don't regret any of it. I just wish things would slow down... Well, just a bit anyway. "There is more to life than simply increasing its speed" ~ Mahatma Gandhi I think there may be something to that. Reading Consistory Sublime Princes of the Royal Secret, 32 Ill. William H. Tennant, Jr., 33 Commander-in-Chief TO HOST THE BLACK TIE DINNER A Members Only Reception and Dinner inclusive to all Master Masons. Guest Speaker Rev. William D. Hartman, 33 Associate Grand Prior Supreme Council, 33, A.A.S.R.N.M.J. Again this Fall. OCTOBER 4, 2013 VALLEY NOTICE Is a publication of the four bodies of the Valley of Reading, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry for the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction and is the official notice of meetings, events and activities of the Valley. Editor - Dick Miller, 32 Associate Editor - Ill. Blaine F. Fabian, 33 Ill. Christopher H. Tecklenburg, 33 MSA, Secretary The Valley of Reading, A.A.S.R. P.O. 3 Sovereign Prince Speaks Robert C. Baessler Most Wise Master s Moment Richard E. Miller Greetings, 2013 is off to a wonderful start. (Karen and I are now SnowBirds in Port Charolette, Florida). Again, I wish to extend my thanks to all those who helped in making Holiday Happenings a wonderful success. The officers are already thinking of 2013; improvements and additions that can be made to our Scottish Rite Tradition. If anyone has any ideas please make them known to any officer or Past Sovereign Prince. As usual, there are many activities that the Valley has to offer to its members, couples and families. Page through this notice and I'm sure you will find something to interest you. Attend these functions and become involved in what Scottich Rite has to offer for you as a member and your family.you will be richer for attending any of The Valley of Reading Events. Lastly, be sure to attend Spring Reunion, Saturday, May 18, and bring a Brother to the Stated Meeting, May, 28. May God Bless You Keep the Faith May God Bless! Those members who remained to watch the Play, The December Rose, were well rewarded. Senior Knight Harry Hackman, 33, provided the audience with a fine performance as the Worshipful Master, as did the rest of the brethren of the impressive members of the cast. Those of you who were not able to attend the November Reunion have yet another opportunity to view fine renditions of the several degrees conferred by your fellow Scottish Rite Masons. Yes, the May 18, reunion is just around the square and compass. The Feast of the Pascal Lamb is scheduled for Sunday, March 17, 2013, 2 PM, in the Auditorium. At the Conclusion of the Feast, refreshments will be served in the Zimmerman Dining Room. The Feast is a memorial for the brethren of the Valley who have completed their journey in this world during the last year. As I write this note, I was informed that a fellow member of my Blue Lodge, and Valley of Reading, Fred Petit, has died. I remember Fred s entry into the Fraternity, as I was already a Past Master in the mid-1980s. I always enjoyed Fred s fellowship and, as one of brethren who will join the others in this Memorial Service, I remind each of you of that there is certainly a brother who you will miss sharing Fraternal Company and Fellowship. The Feast is the time to fondly remember his company and Fellowship. My daughter Catharine Irene Miller Kilgore has agreed to sing during this year s feast. Catharine will be accompanied by Ill. Jim Shaw, 33, DDGM. I thank Jim for his desire to share his talent to complement that of Catharine s. At the stated meetings the members attend, we listen to our fellows suspended for non-payment of dues. Remember you can pay your dues on-line. Each member suspended causes our Valley to the poorer in brotherhood and fellowship for the failure of a member to maintain his membership. May God Bless All the Members of the Valley and their families. I hope to see you at the Next Stated Meeting, Tuesday, March 19,

7 MEMBERSHIP AND YOU on today s schedule? Well here s an idea, pick up the phone Why don t you meet him for that special beverage of Scottish Rite. Explain the well-known phrase of What s he could both receive and enjoy. Another tidbit often Are you tired, bored, nothing on television of interest, or haven t had any meetings call your good friend or buddy or even better. choice and explain Freemasonry and in it for me and the benefits of membership heard is There s a lot of truth said in jest. As leaders, which we all are but in different capacities, many items must be used in a leadership role. No tricks, no gimmicks but as Joe Friday would say Just the facts. Masons are all leaders and must lead by example which is exemplified through responsibility by having the power of vision, managing change, and motivation all lead to developing good men into better men. The great Valley of Reading including its officers as well as the membership committee are here to help. If you know of a worthy candidate for Freemasonry or for Scottish Rite and not sure how to approach him about membership, contact an officer and we ll be glad to assist. Remind him about the ICE age identified as Inspiration, Convenience and Enjoyment, is the goal of all members of the Scottish Rite. An offer of Membership is a benefit to Masonic knowledge and a goal that any of the members of our Valley should be able to communicate to a potential member so that he knows that membership is an achievement that should not be unheeded. Why should I remain a member of the Scottish Rite??? I can t get to the meetings!!! Being a Mason is not just attending meetings, although you do get more out of the craft if you get together with your brethren. Being a Mason is living a good life based on Masonic principles and living up to your vows. And when you pay your dues, you are supporting a cause you believe in, helping to continue a fraternity of free men who believe in moral character, love of country and the practice of the tenets as we are taught in the Lodge and in the Rite. (Unknown) We will strive to be a Fraternity that fulfills Our Masonic obligation to care for our members. 9 Northern Masonic Jurisdiction Celebrates 200 Years of Brotherhood This is a big year for the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the United States of America as we celebrate our 200 th anniversary. Many programs and activities are being planned. The main theme of the celebration is 200 Years of Brotherhood in keeping with the most important tenet of our institution. The official celebration period is from August 5, 2012 thru December 31, Some programs presented below have been expanded to include all of 2012 and 2013 for various supporting reasons. All Valleys are being encouraged to celebrate the 200 th Anniversary in a manner appropriate for their Valley. There will be no single event or Anniversary Class for the jurisdiction, yet there will be many ways that each Valley may join in a jurisdiction wide celebration. A goal of the Supreme Council and the 200 th Anniversary Committee is to assist all Valleys with their membership growth. In support of those efforts, several incentives have been developed to assist membership chairmen and committees. First, for all new initiates, there will be a special 200 th Anniversary pocket jewel to be given to all candidates receiving the 32 nd degree in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction in the period from Jan 1, 2012 thru December 31, The eligibility period has been expanded so as not to impact 2012 spring classes in a negative manner. Pocket jewels will also be available to any 32 Scottish Rite Mason at a cost of $26.95 each. To purchase a jewel, send a check to Supreme Council, P.O.Box 519,Lexington, MA 02420, or on line at Jurisdiction-wide, a membership goal of 10,000 new initiates or just over 6% of the January 1, 2012 membership has been set for the two years of celebration. This is a very reachable goal. To assist in attaining this goal, there will be four different incentive programs sponsored by Supreme Council. These incentives are in effect from January 1, 2012 through December 31, There will be a Valley Level Member incentive for first line signers as well as a jurisdiction wide incentive. There will also be separate special incentives for the Secretaries and the Membership Chairmen as they will be ineligible for the 1 st line signer incentives. Incentive A is a Valley level Member incentive rewarding the top two 1 st Line Signers of every Valley. This incentive is very simple. For every Valley, the Scottish Rite member with the greatest number of 1 st Line Signer credits at the end of the two year period reflecting all new candidates who have completed the 32 nd degree within the two year period will receive a $500 gift card. The Scottish Rite member with the second greatest 1 st Line Signer credits for those completing the 32 nd degree for the same period will receive a $100 gift card. Winners will be determined by Supreme Council based upon MDS statistics for the 2012 and 2013 calendar years. Winners will be posted in the 2014 February issue of the Northern Light. Distribution of prizes will be made by Supreme Council at that time. Incentive B is a Jurisdiction wide Member incentive for eligible 1 st Line Signers for the two year period. This is a random drawing of all eligible 1 st Line Signers. This incentive encourages every Scottish Rite Member to find a candidate to sponsor. In this incentive, all 1 st Line Signers (except as noted below) for new initiates completing the 32 nd degree during the two year period from January 1, 2012 through December 31, 2013 are eligible for a single random drawing with the first prize being a 14 day Land/Cruise tour for two to ALASKA, a $7500 value (Based on selected Holland America land cruise tours, airfare and taxes included). Second prize is $2500 and third prize is $500. All winners must be members in good standing of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. Reinstatements and affiliations, although desired do not count as part of this incentive. 9
