2 The Commander-in-Chief Ill. Herbert K. Swisher, 33 Thrice Potent Master s Corner Thomas Gammon, IV As I write to you, the Spring Reunion is just a few days away. I hope that you have encouraged membership in our Scottish Rite within your Blue Lodge and promoted participation in our great organization. I also hope to see you at the Reunion. If you have not attended recently, I'd like to see you there and greet you. It is a wonderful time. Speaking of time...the time has arrived to hold an election of officers... This is my last opportunity as Commander in Chief to address the membership in this capacity, and I wanted to simply say thank you for so many things. It has been a growing experience for me personally and I hope that I have been able, in some way, to improve the strength of our organization in these past six years. I'd like to thank all of the current and past presiding officers, and all of the members of the various committees who have given so much of their time and treasure to help make our Valley a wonderful experience for our membership. A special thanks to Tex, Lois, Walt, Kenny, and Marlin for all of your hard work. It has been my pleasure working with you. I'd like to thank the Consistory Officers for supporting me and for honoring me with their attendance at our Stated Meetings. Thanks Brothers. And to our incoming Commander-in-Chief, Ill. William H. Tennant Jr, 33 and our 1st & 2nd Lieutenant Commanders; the best of good luck and good health, and I'll still be around to help you should you need me. My congratulations also to the other officers being installed, and I wish them success in their duties in the upcoming Scottish Rite year. Thank you, Ill. L Donald Loos, 33 and all of the other Consistory officers for your confidence in me and for the opportunity to serve in this prestigious position. It certainly was an unexpected opportunity in life, and I hope that I have met your expectations of me. God's Blessing to all... I hope to see you on the stage. Brethren, where did the year go? It seems like it was just last week that we were preparing ourselves to be installed; now here we are on the verge of completing our year as presiding officers. I would like to thank each and every Brother in The Valley of Reading for your support and assistance in the past year, it truly made for a tremendous experience. Even though we are short timers, we must not forget that that your Valley will be a very busy place with all of the events that are scheduled between now and summer. Please make every effort to come out and support The Valley and The Officers and enjoy the fellowship and good times that these events spark. I would also like to offer Brother Andrew E. Weitzenkorn, and the Officers of the Lodge of Perfection much success in the coming year. I know that you will do a great job leading the line into 2014!!! May God bless all of you and this GREAT Country!! VALLEY NOTICE Is a publication of the four bodies of the Valley of Reading, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry for the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction and is the official notice of meetings, events and activities of the Valley. 3 Sovereign Prince Speaks Robert C. Baessler Most Wise Master s Moment Richard E. Miller May God Bless You All It is hard to believe that the journey that was started six years ago will reaching its zenith as the gavel is passed to the next Sovereign Prince, Stephen Higgins, at the May Stated Meeting. I would like to thank Carl Berger for inviting me to join the Council of Princes of Jerusalem and enter into the line to become Sovereign Prince. The six years spent in the line at first appeared to be a long journey but once things get moving time goes rapidly. A big THANK YOU is extended to many Past Sovereign Princes for their assistance and guidance. The early years were a definite learning experience where mistakes were made. (Dave Dickson thank you for your perseverance) Another shout out to the officers for the support given this year especially with the Holiday Happening weekends. This two weekend event was a wonderful time to showcase Scottish Rite Masonry to the public. Thank you Carey Kaucher for being instrumental in bringing Tuba Christmas to our stage. What a very enjoyable music event. Thank you to the Scottish Rite Players for their performance of December Rose. We are looking forward to another presentation this year. To all of those who assisted in any way in making Holiday Happening a wonderful experience THANK YOU. I hope that the brethren reading this article can catch some of the enthusiasm that I have for the Valley of Reading and become involved in opportunities that are offered. Much help is needed for the reunions both onstage and behind the stage (contact personnel are noted in this issue). Be sure to attend the Spring Reunion and witness many fine degrees. Attend the Stated Meting where new officers will be installed. Read the Valley Notice to find County Club activities that are being offered during the summer attend them. Don't miss the AASR Picnic August 3, October 4 is the Feast of Tishri, a formal affair open to all brethren and a wonderful way to introduce them to Scottish Rite. Then before we know it, Holiday Happening will be here to showcase Scottish Rite to the public. Soo much is offered, don't miss it. And now, my term as Sovereign Prince comes to an end and a new chapter begins in my journey in Scottish Rite Masonry. Again, thank you to all Past Sovereign Princes, current officers of the Council of Princes of Jerusalem, Tex and Lois, and my wonderful wife Karen in assisting me in this wonderful and fulfilling chapter. Time is so elusive. The common theme in the final messages of the respective Masters of the four bodies is certain to be time. So is my final message as Most Wise Master. In the 40 years of my Scottish Rite membership, the last several have been most rewarding. Standing on stage listening to the Feast of Paschal Lamb, hearing one s daughter sing, and the finality of hearing the name of a friend I had known for decades is, for me, an emotional experience. The Feast of the Paschal Lamb seems more meaningful from year to year. This year, with the assistance of Clarence Martin, 33, Ed Stein, Bob Hoyes, and John Nester, 33, Jim Shaw, 33 and so many supportive others, the program was presented with great reverence. The Feast is a duty of affection expressed on behalf of the Consistory. The next Most Wise Master will be Harry Hackman, 33, who will continue the tradition of excellence of the past presiding officers. The assistance rendered by John Nester, 33, as the Secretary of Rose Croix is exceptional. John is the source of announcements on behalf of the Most Wise Master and coordinates the responses. I am grateful for and thank the officers serving with me. Please join with me to fraternally greet the newest officers of the line, Gary Dukeman and John March. Both of these gentlemen personify and reflect the dedication of the all of the Past Most Wise Masters and the officers of the Rose Croix, as well as those of the several bodies. To receive an appointment in any of these bodies, is an acknowledgment of dedication and commitment to Scottish Rite. I mentioned earlier that the last several years have been most rewarding because of involvement and participation in Scottish Rite. The Brothers participating in Scottish Rite are waiting for YOU to join - which will become family as the years pass. My tenure began and will end in the blink of an eye. The only reality that is permanent is the appointment of those to follow, those who will provide a fine level of service to Scottish Rite. I treasure the years in York Rite and Scottish Rite. I hope that not only will I see you on stage, but that you will own the stage through your dedication and participation to Scottish Rite. In closing, Our Valley would not be the example it is were it not for Tex and Lois. My thanks to each of you! God Bless All the Members of the Valley and their families. God Make His Face Shine Upon You, and Give You Peace. I hope to see you at the Reunion, Saturday, May 18,

5 A TRIBUTE TO THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED As has been our custom on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 we will again pause to pay tribute to the presiding officers of the Lodge, Council, Chapter, and Consistory who will complete their term of office on May 31, These brethren have been faithful in the performance of their duties. They have accepted the responsibilities of their offices not only during their year as presiding officers but all along the line of going through the chairs. They have fully supported all of the activities of the Valley which includes Club participation. They have made many friends and the Valley of Reading is better and richer through the service that they have so unselfishly given. The true office of a Mason is to sow that others may reap, to work and plant for those who will follow in our footsteps. Only through kindness and giving of service and friendship and cheer can we learn the true meaning of living. Each of these brethren has fulfilled these attributes to the fullest measure. We are proud to honor: Brother Thomas Gamon, IV, 32 Thrice Potent Master Brother Robert C. Baessler, 32 Sovereign Prince Brother Richard E. Miller, 32 Most Wise Master To these officers we might say that the decoration that they will receive is not given as a memorial to their labors but as an inspiration to continue the fine contribution that they are making to the Scottish Rite. A great Valley has every right to expect still greater accomplishments from these four brethren. Congratulations and appreciation to each of the retiring officers. Brother Herbert K. Swisher, 33 Commander-in-Chief As Scottish Rite Masons, we are taught that God is best served by those who best serve their fellow men and who reveal in their own lives the compassion of the Eternal. 5

The brethren that we honor today have already left their mark; their works are everlasting, and they have lived in accordance with the truth and precepts of our order. The Masonic influence has long been felt in their lives as they passed through the corridors of the temple and practiced the truths and mysteries of the order; they believed in them, and practiced them, and made them an integral part of their lives. They found that Masonry is a way of life a set of virtues and fundamental truths which must be a living, vital part of our existence, not merely a series of ritualistic performances. It is a privilege and an honor to once again pay tribute to those who have reached their 50 th anniversary in Scottish Rite Masonry, a milestone in their Masonic lives. CONGRATULATIONS to all of the following brethren. Proper honor will be bestowed upon them during the Saturday session of our Spring Reunion, at which time those who are able to attend will receive their 50-year pins from the Commander-in-Chief. Those who cannot attend will receive their pins through the mail. Ray S. Balmer Clifford L. Behrendt John V. Berry George E. Confer Robert F. Dix I. Newton Evans, Jr. Franklin A. Felty, Jr. Elmer R. 11 New Passport Recognition As many of you are aware, Your Supreme Council has made an update to the passport recognition program. The Program requires each member to have his passport stamped when he has witnessed a degree in any one of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction Valleys. A member who has witnessed all 29 degrees of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction should have his Valley Secretary certify the completion of the passport. The Secretary then submits the certified passport to Supreme Council for recognition and certification. The Changes that has been made do not affect how the program works, simply the recognition items. The certificate has been updated to be more in-line with other Supreme Council certificates and Supreme Council is now issuing a Gold passport to the member as recognition that he has completed the cycle at least once. Therefore, if you see a gold passport, congratulate the brother and continue to stamp his passport book. For those members who have already completed a passport and would like to have a new certificate and new GOLD passport issued, simply present your present book to your Secretary and he will forward your passport to Supreme Council for action. Once verified, a new passport certificate will be issued. A New Pennsylvania Scottish Rite Mobile App Is available This App is available to all Scottish Rite Masons for free and will help you connect, learn of events, and navigate to all the Scottish Rite Valleys in Pennsylvania. Download to your smartphone browser or snap this QR code And bring the journey to your fingertips 11
