2 The Commander-in-Chief Ill. Victor M. Frederick III., 33 Congratulations to Past Thrice Potent Master Kevin S. Barnhardt, Past Sovereign Prince Paul A. Swank Jr. and Past Most Wise Master Bradley L. Auker. It has certainly been a pleasure working with you this past year and we thank you all for your contributions to the Valley during your tenure. Also congratulations to the other newly installed officers James A. Gilbert LOP, Michael D. Wolfe Council and Edward R Stein Chapter. I am looking forward to working with you and your officers this coming year. Summer is a few days away and I wish all of you a safe, prosperous and enjoyable season. Our spring reunion went well except for a lack of more candidates. The new class appears to be a group destined to help their Valley prosper. The class members should soon be hearing from the Valley for participation in the upcoming fall reunion. I hope that the new members and their significant others who attended our stated meeting had an enjoyable evening. If you did, please tell your brothers and bring them with you at our next affair. If you did not then tell me so that my staff and I can make appropriate changes to assure that our Valley brings an Inspirational, Convenient and Enjoyable experience to all. Brethren it is not too soon to be thinking about rounding up new members. With our Grand Master having a one day class and Scottish Rite following suite on October 30 th 2010, we may be able to help eliminate our membership problem. A person that you consider to be worthy of becoming a Mason and a Scottish Rite Mason can accomplish this honor in one day. For those who are already our Brothers we are having our usual fall reunion. That gives us two chances in less than a month to introduce Masonry and Scottish Rite to deserving individuals. If each of us would only bring in one new member in the next year our budget problems would be eliminated. On August 7 th we will have our annual Family Picnic at the Reading Liederkranz. Bring you family for an afternoon of fun and refreshment. Again this year bring your pitching arm. We will have a dunk the Active (Ill Russell W. Baker 33 Deg) and dunk the Commander in Chief contest. Further details for the picnic are in this newsletter. Check out the rest of this news letter for other Valley and County Club events, and come out and support your brethren. Thrice Potent Master s Corner James A. Gilbert Greeting to all brethren. First I would like to express my thanks and overwhelming gratitude for the aid of many brothers to reach the station of TPM. I have never seen eight years go by so fast. Thinking of something to write for my column that has not already been said was a real challenge for me. After what seemed to be forever, two words came to mind, Commitment and Brotherhood. Commitment to pledge or assign to some particular course and Brotherhood the state of being brothers as in an association or fraternity. These have been the two words that have meant the most to me in my Masonic journey. The fact that Masons believe in personal honor, principle, moral, and ethical behavior and setting a good example in our community, will hereby achieve better, happier, and wiser men which in turn creates a more productive world for all mankind. There are many ways to fulfill this opportunity in the Scottish Rite Fraternity. The doors are always open and all you have to do is step inside and ask. Support your County Clubs and Fund Raisers. Get involved and I promise you will be a happier and better person for your effort. Sovereign Prince Speaks Michael D. Wolfe Being elected Sovereign Prince for the Valley of Reading is the one of the most exciting and respectable positions that I have held since being Worshipful Master of Ephrata Lodge #665 in I m very thankful for the opportunity to serve the Valley as Sovereign Prince. The goal I set for this term is to serve the Valley in the best possible way that I can. Firstly by listening to the members and acting on their ideas. Secondly by following the guidelines set by the Valley and thirdly by taking care of the officers and past Sovereign Princes. Pride is part of my Masonic path. Several men have told me over the years that they feel welcomed and relaxed and that the people are kind and go out of their ways to help when they visit the Valley of Reading. That s how the Sovereign Princes get involved. We all should be very proud of this Valley and its officers. There is so much to do that is associated with being a Scottish Rite Mason. Such as club dinners, picnics, Valley dinners, egg hunts, fishing rodeos, concerts, dances, fundraisers, Christmas programs, train clubs, motorcycle clubs, and much more. So no one should be saying that there isn t anything for them to do at the Valley of Reading. There is something for everybody! Please support your Learning Center and the Valley by attending some of these functions and paying your dues. You ll be glad you did! 2

3 Most Wise Master s Moment Edward R. Stein With the beauty of the spring and summer months, comes the promise of new life and new beginnings. With that, I would like extend a sincere Thank You to the Past Most Wise Masters, the leadership of Consistory and the Brethren of the Valley of Reading for the honor and opportunity to serve as Most Wise Master, Knight Rose Croix. On October 30 th, 2010, The Valley of Reading will be hosting a One-Day-Class in support of PA Blue Lodge Masonry and its Appendant Bodies. It is said that those who have the ability and the means, have a responsibility to step forward in service! And so it is the responsibility of each and every one of us to once again step forward in service of Freemasonry and the Valley of Reading. To that end, I challenge my fellow Masons to invite a good man to join us as a Brother. Just think if each one of us were to sign a petition and bring only ONE new member to the One-Day-Class, the Valley of Reading would add approximately 4,000 new members to our ranks. Won t you please join me in making this day a success for the good of Freemasonry in general and the great Valley of Reading in particular! Thank you and I look forward to seeing you at our next Valley sponsored function! Combined Club s Ladies Night By Carl F. Berger Another success story evolved in May when the ladies and guests of the valley experienced a night of ICE. That stands for Inspiration, convenience and enjoyment (in case you are not familiar with the name). The evening began with a fine dinner featuring many flavors to savor. Immediately following was a wonderful performance by Charlie Zahm. His musical talents accompanied by one of the best award winning fiddle players entertained those in attendance. If you haven t attended any of these annual Ladies Night functions you sure are missing a great opportunity to treat your significant other and guests to a quiet and relaxing evening. Think about it for next year. Be a part, you deserve it. They deserve it. One Day Masonic Journey Coming In October To Valley of Reading On October 30, 2010, the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania will hold a One Day Masonic Journey in 13 locations across the state. These classes will be conducted much the same as the One Day Class held in This is an excellent opportunity to INVITE interested, quality men, who may have busy schedules and numerous business and personal time commitments, to join our ranks. During this event, approved candidates will be able to join Symbolic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Shrine Freemasonry all in one day. Petitions must be presented to your Blue Lodge as they always have been. Get your petitions presented in adequate time to be balloted and approved before your October stated meeting (your September stated meeting is the deadline line to present petitions). Scottish Rite petitions will be accepted up to October 22, 2010 to receive Scottish Rite s 32 at the One Day Masonic Journey, and November 12 to receive the degrees at the Fall Reunion. All Masonic Bodies have been pleading with our members to increase our membership in Lodge, Scottish Rite and Shrine. Now we can work together to realize this goal. Locally, the One Day Masonic Journey will be held at the Scottish Rite Cathedral in West Reading. Brethren, the future of Freemasonry depends on each of us to do our part in securing new and worthy candidates for our lodges. For petitions and additional information contact your lodge secretary. Please do your part to make this a banner day in Pennsylvania Masonry. Candidates who wish to petition the Scottish Rite Valley of Reading will be offered a One Day Masonic Journey special discounted fee of $ for both this day and the Fall Reunion on Saturday, November 20, Brethren, this is an excellent opportunity to invite qualified men to become Master Masons and Scottish Rite Masons in one day. Also, brethren who are Master Masons are encouraged to become Scottish Rite Masons this same day. Membership portfolios, applications, and petitions are available at the Scottish Rite Office. Welcome New Members By Carl F. Berger On behalf of the Valley of Reading AASR and the County Clubs we applaud you for this recent undertaking. Your knowledge of the fraternity and the benefits it offers to you and your family are awesome. However, you must be cautioned that without attending meetings or events your growth will not strengthen as quickly. No one expects anyone to attend all the doings but you are encouraged to try a few and see what fits your taste and schedule. County club events are in your local area. If you are uncertain about these, contact the Valley office for details. Reunions too open the door for a wide range of fun. We have the resources to train in any area in which you have an interest. 3

Abbott Scholarships are given to children of Scottish Rite Masonic families, to young people who have been active in Masonicrelated organizations such as DeMolay, Rainbow and Job s Daughters, and to graduates of our 32 Masonic Learning Centers for Children. The Grants are made throughout the fifteen-state Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. Total scholarships in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction will be $450,000 for the academic period. A year ago 352 college level students across the Jurisdiction were helped by Abbott grants. Support for the growing scholarship program comes from the Supreme Council Education and Charity Fund established through the generous legacy of former Sovereign Grand Commander Leon M. Abbott. In recent years, the fund has been strengthened by sharing in annual contributions to the Blue envelope appeal by the Fraternity s 200,000 members. Applications are available on line, beginning in January of each year, at Click on the Philanthropy Tab, than click on Abbott Scholarship. Additional scholarships are available at Click on Masonic Scholarship Resource Guide. 9 Schuylkill County Club Serves Up Steak and Fun The Schuylkill County Club held its annual Stag Steak Fry on Wednesday, June 9 at Schuylkill Lodge in Orwigsburg. Though the weather was wet, it did not dampen the spirit of fellowship. The brethren simply covered the grill, and served up sumptuous steaks indoors. By all accounts, the food was delicious and the fellowship, priceless. John Gay Sports Banquet Scores Extra Points The Chester County Club hosted their annual John Gay Memorial Sports Banquet to raise funds in support of their scholarship fund on Thursday, June 24. They filled the Revere Tavern in Paradise to capacity with their special guest, former Philadelphia Eagle Vince Papale. Papale had also gained further notoriety as the subject of the 2006 film Invincible starring Mark Wahlberg as Papale and Greg Kinear as former Eagles Head Coach Dick Vermeil. This year s banquet scored extra points with the brethren when Dick Vermeil also attended and addressed the club. Vermeil had been the featured speaker for the John Gay Banquet in Both Papale and Vermeil are dynamic personalities and enthralling speakers who helped make this interesting and enjoyable event a win-win.
