2 FALL 2014 VALLEY NEWS AND VIEWS PAGE 2 VALLEY OF CAMBRIDGE Allegiance The bodies of the Scottish Rite sitting in the Valley of Cambridge, State of Ohio, acknowledge and yield allegiance to the Supreme Council, Thirty-Third Degree, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry for the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the United States of America, whose Grand East is in Lexington, MA and whose Chief Officer is Ill. John Wm. McNaughton, 33º, Sovereign Grand Commander. Deputy for Ohio Douglas N Kaylor, 33º Deputy s Representative Jeffrey L Miller, 33º Thrice Potent Master Timothy A Oliver, 32º Sovereign Prince W Gene Edgell, 33º Most Wise Master Aaron L French, 32º Commander in Chief David L Jacobs, 33º Executive Committee Chair Roger C Gaul, 33º Treasurer James M Law, 33º Secretary Thomas C Fisher, 33º Valley News and Views is a publication of the Valley of Cambridge, A.A.S.R., and is published four times each year. Stated meetings of the Valley are on the second Monday of each month September to June at 7:30 pm. The meeting location is the Scottish Rite office at 935 Wheeling Ave, Cambridge, Ohio. Occasionally the meeting time, date, or location will change. Any change will be announced in the Valley News and Views. Valley of Cambridge 935 Wheeling Avenue PO Box 1825 Cambridge, OH Phone: Fax: Website: cambridge32.com Office Hours: 11 am to 4 pm Monday, Wednesday, and Friday EDWARD G RINARD ELECTED TO RECEIVE THE 33 On September 6, 2014 Jeffrey L Miller, 33, Deputy s Representative for the Valley of Cambridge, announced that Edward G Rinard had been elected in 2014 one of the thirteen Scottish Rite members from Ohio to receive the 33. Ed is a member of Matamoras #374 F&AM and has a significant masonic, civic, and community resume. Ed will join Dennis R Barlow, of Lone Star #175, in receiving their 33 on September 1, 2015 at Indianapolis, Indiana. At this reception Jeffrey also announced that D Richard Heldman, 33, from the Valley of Cambridge, had been elected an Active member for the state of Ohio and Douglas N Kaylor, 33, Active for Ohio from the Valley of Dayton, had been elected Deputy for Ohio at the Annual Meeting of the Supreme Council of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction on August 22, 2014 at Lexington, Massachusetts. Congratulations to each of these Brethren as they enter a new phase of their Masonic Life and Service. FROM THE SECRETARY S DESK Summer is absolutely gone and I am still behind. Just a few thoughts: In July Most Worshipful and Illustrious Brother Robert A Hinshaw passed away. I only had the pleasure of meeting him once. It was the occasion of his 50 years as a 33 Mason and the Sovereign Grand Commander s presentation in recognition of this event. It was at Dunns Rock #267 AF&AM in Brevard, North Carolina. What a nice evening as a few of us from Cambridge visited with the masonic brethren, the family and this true gentleman. Ed Rinard was elected to receive the 33. What a joy to discuss being elected a 33 with one of our members. Ed is an asset to masonry and the Scottish Rite and deserving of this honorary degree. Notice the article on page 5 about the Valley matching member s donations to the Children s Dyslexia Center up to $5000 this year. We have historically received about $2500 each year so with over 2000 members this should not be too much of an undertaking to increase this to $5000 this year. Our reunion is November 8 and at this time we have one new petition in hand. We have several carry overs but it would be nice to see a few more. If you need any help with petitions or brochures, let me know. For your information the Valley of Cambridge had the best membership & retention numbers proportionally for 2013/2014. Our Valley lost 1.87% of its members in 2013/2014. The next best Valley was a loss of 3.53% and the average for Ohio was a loss of 6.53%. It is hard to be joyful when a loss of 1.87% is a good year, but I am hopeful that someday we will see that be a positive number. Dues notices will be in the mail soon. There will be NO INCREASE for I am sure we will need to increase in the future but not this year. Sincerely and fraternally Tom Fisher

Abbott Scholarships are given to Scottish Rite Masons, the children of Scottish Rite Masons, and to young people who are active in Masonic youth organizations such as DeMolay, Rainbow Girls and Job s Daughters. Support for the scholarship program comes from the Valley of Cambridge, the Supreme Council, and annual contributions to the blue envelope appeal by the Fraternity s 150,000 members. Since 1951 more than $3 million have been awarded to students from the fifteen states of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the Scottish Rite. SCOTTISH RITE DUE CARDS In 2012 the Supreme Council began issuing permanent dues cards. The scan to the right is what they look like. They are plastic, grey in color, purple lettering, and look like a credit card. Over the years we have more than a few requests for replacements and just want you to know that we are more than happy to request a new card for you. The membership card for Life members is gold in color, but the same process. Up until this change in 2012 the dues card for the following year came with the dues notice for all members who were in good standing. We were about the only organization that sent a current year s dues card with the dues notice. It was a good idea and eliminated a lot of postage, but it did cause some confusion. As you get your 2015 dues notices, look to see if you have a membership card and if you do not please let us know.

5 FALL 2014 VALLEY NEWS AND VIEWS PAGE 5 Just a few tidbits about the Children s Dyslexia Center of Southeastern Ohio: We are one of the 49 Dyslexia Centers in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction who are helping children gain skills to be able to read at Grade Level. Since 2001 our Center has worked with 225 children from 32 different schools and conducted 15,000 tutoring sessions at no cost to the families. The typical child completes between 100 and 175 tutoring sessions over a two or three year period. Our last class of five graduates traveled over 31,000 miles to complete their program. They traveled around the world and to California and back to learn to read. That is dedication on the part of the students and their parents. Here is a recent parent s comment and you can hear her relief: When my son began, he was unsure of himself, would not participate in class, really struggled sounding out words, and had a hard time reading. He has done a complete 360 degree turn since he started at the Center. His teachers have been very impressed as well and said he now volunteers to read in class!! Such a huge improvement. This Center changed my son s life and I know he can succeed in whatever he does! CHILDREN S DYSLEXIA CENTER NEWS The Cambridge Kiwanis Foundation awarded the Dyslexia Center a generous $10,000 grant to help fund an Orton Gillingham training class for area teachers. At this point we have completed 39 of the 50 classroom hours and have begun the required practicum hours. The Kiwanis Foundation has been a supporter of the Center from the beginning and we thank them for believing in us. By the time you receive this newsletter our 12th Annual Golf Outing will be over. This is the major fundraiser for the Center and over the years has been very successful. Jerry Ables, MSA one of our tireless workers has had serious health issues this fall and his support and work have been greatly missed. We are hopeful that our outing will still be successful but you are never sure how much someone does for you until it does not happen. Get well quick Jerry-you are missed. Again, we thank all of you for your support. Jen Navicky, Director VALLEY TO INCREASE SUPPORT TO CHILDREN S DYSLEXIA CENTER At its September meeting the Executive Committee of the Valley of Cambridge voted to increase support to the Children s Dyslexia Center of Southeastern Ohio. Because of a windfall for the Valley by having its property approved for tax relief made possible by a revision to the Ohio Revised Code, the Valley will match the first $5000 given by its members through the Membership Data System. These donations normally are received with the dues notices each fall and over the last five years have averaged about $2500 per year. The Valley s match will double this historical number to about $5000 but we are hopeful that the members will also increase their donations so that at least $10,000 will be donated by the members ($5000) and the Valley ($5000). ALL LADIES are welcome to join in the activities that have been planned for the day of the Scottish Rite Reunion, Saturday, November 8. We will be taking a driving tour of historic downtown Zanesville where we will have the opportunity to visit art galleries, antique stores and enjoy lunch at Bryan Place restaurant where we will order off the menu. After lunch we will visit an historic home in the Putnam district. There will be a $5.00 admission charge for touring this architectural gem. Following the tour, we will complete our day at the renowned Tom s Ice Cream Bowl where we can enjoy a sweet treat. There will be a minimal amount of walking involved for these activities and all locations are handicapped accessible. If you would like to join us, please contact the Scottish Rite office ( ) by Monday, November 3. This year we have two meeting locations. The ladies coming to Cambridge with their husbands will meet at the Scottish Rite office and leave for Zanesville at 8:30. Ladies wishing to meet us in Zanesville should be at the John McIntyre library by 9:15. We have a fun filled day planned and hope you will share it with us!
