Tecklenburg, 33, MSA Secretary DINNER BEFORE THE MEETING ON MAY 26 6 TO 6:45 P.M. $5.00 PER PERSON Installation of Officers Petitions for this class will be accepted until May 11. A list of candidates will be available in the Scottish Rite Office beginning May 13. SPONSOR S RESPONSIBILITY For every petitioner for the Scottish Rite degrees there are two Scottish Rite Masons on who rests a responsibility for the proper training of that petitioner. The two Scottish Rite Masons who sign the petition have a responsibility that does not end with their signature on the petition. If you invite a guest to a gathering at your home, you make sure that he meets all your guests, and is made welcome and comfortable. Isn t the Master Mason who you recommend to Scottish Rite Freemasonry entitled to the same courtesy? As his sponsor, is it not your duty to take an interest in his progress? It seems to us that it is, and that you should see to it that he fully understands the fine lessons of our degrees. If you recommend a man to the Scottish Rite, satisfy yourself that he is receiving that for which you recommended him. To do so is but a Masonic courtesy and it is also your duty as a Scottish Rite mason. Let s all give this matter some serious consideration. It will certainly bring forth good results if you attend the conferring of the degrees at our Reunions.

The Commander-in-Chief Ill. L. Donald Loos, Jr., 33 Greetings and best wishes for a happy and prosperous springtime. This is my favorite time of the year. The new growth on our flowers and trees is bursting out in an array of color to remind us that the dull and drab days of winter are gone. This is the season of renewed activity in our Scottish Rite Valley. Many of us are studying our lines and preparing for the rehearsals that enable us to perform well in the several degrees that will be presented at our annual spring reunion on May 16 th. Plan to attend the reunion and witness the fine degree work that we present for your benefit. Our annual Spring Reunion is also the time for us to replenish our membership and our participation in the many functions in the Valley of Reading. We hope to present a large class at our reunion and to do so requires the help and dedication of all our members. We have recently sent an invitation to the Blue Lodge Masons living in our jurisdiction, who are not members of the Scottish Rite, inviting them to join our Valley. We encourage you to contact these Blue Lodge Masons and offer to sponsor them as candidates for our reunion. You are all on our membership committee. Working together we can increase our membership and keep our Valley strong and viable. All of us who live within our jurisdiction are automatically members of a County Club. (There is no cost to join and belong and no dues to pay.) If you are not familiar with your County Club and its activities, let us know and we will have your County Club contact you. (Just call the Valley Secretary, ) Each of these Clubs has social activities throughout the year and invites you to participate in the fun and fellowship they offer. You will have the opportunity to meet new friends and renew old acquaintances at these events. The Valley of Reading is a family oriented organization. Our next family event will be the annual Fishing Rodeo and Fun Day at Limestone Springs Trout Hatchery near Richland on June 13. This is a great day for the kiddies. Check your Valley Notice for details and reservations. The annual Family Picnic will be held on Saturday August 1, 2009 at the Reading Liederkrantz. Bring your family and enjoy a day of fun, fellowship and great food. Check the Valley Notice for more details about this great picnic. I hope to have the opportunity to meet and greet many of you at our Stated Meeting on May 26 th. We will have a dinner for our members and their ladies at 6:00 p.m. The dinner cost is only $5.00 for an excellent meal. Following dinner, our meetings will begin at 7:00 p.m. While we are meeting, the ladies also will meet as the Ladies Auxiliary. The ladies have a good social time and some very interesting programs. This is our annual election and installation of officers. Following the meeting we will have an open installation of the officers to serve our Valley for the ensuing year. Come out and support your new officers. It was a great honor and privilege to serve as your Commander-in-Chief for the past two years. Your new officers are ready to assume their duties and I extend my best wishes to them as they lead our Valley to new accomplishments in the coming years. Hope to see you soon. Sovereign Prince Speaks David J. Dickson I am, among other things, a music fan (all kinds). One of my all-time favorite singers had a hit song that began And now the end is near and so I face the final curtain. It is now May and soon I will face my final curtain as your Sovereign Prince. We all know all good things must come to an end. I cannot remember in what year I joined the line but I can assure you that prior to being asked if I was interested in joining the line I never dreamed I would one day be able to say that I was most proud and honored to have served as your sovereign prince for the past twelve months. I had no aspirations and no agenda other than that of being a Scottish Rite Mason. This has been, however, a terrific experience. Many people have, in their lifetime, pointed to another person and said there but for the grace of God go I. This expression is usually used in a negative context, meaning that the speaking individual was saved by God from being like the other person. However, we all know that God does not want us to say that we are thankful that we are not like another person. Certainly, serving as sovereign prince could be considered far short of positions held by some others, such as many of our Nation s leaders, both civilian and military. But instead of praying that they are thankful for not being like others, they have prayed as being thankful for the success they have attained and for God to give them the strength and ability to carry out their responsibilities. You may wonder where I am going with this. My point is that I have thanked God for having granted me the experience of serving as sovereign prince and the ability to carry out my assigned duties. Many of our nation s presidents and military leaders have prayed for God s Devine assistance. We are all familiar with the painting of General George Washington at prayer. General George S. Patton, Jr. prayed for good weather prior to engaging his troops in the Battle of the Bulge. The relevance here is displayed prominently in our Masonic symbols as well as our Scottish Rite motto, leaving no doubt regarding the importance of God in our lives. I would like to conclude my last piece as your sovereign prince with what is probably my favorite writing, next to Lincoln s Gettysburg Address. In the crypt of Saint Paul s Cathedral in London is the tomb of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson. Next to the tomb is a framed copy of The National Call To Prayer. It reads as follows: May the Great God whom I worship grant to my country for the benefit of Europe in general a great and glorious victory and may no misconduct in anyone tarnish it and may humanity after victory be the predominant feature in the British fleet. For myself individually I commit my life to Him that made me and may His blessing alight on my endeavors for serving my country faithfully. To Him I resign myself and the just cause which is entrusted to me to defend. Amen, Amen, Amen. Written by Lord Nelson in his diary while in view of the enemy October 21 st In these days of political correctness let us not forget that upon which our Masonic foundation lies: Spes Mea In Deo Est.

Most Wise Master s Moment John R. Nester Thrice Potent Master s Corner John J. Tumolo, III Many of us approach a challenge or set of circumstances with caution. We are apprehensive by nature and quite simply don't want to fail. Who does? However, we learn that through our experiences and the support and guidance of others our odds for success can be greatly improved. Since becoming a freemason in 1999 I have personally witnessed the support and guidance from members of this fraternity in Blue Lodge, Scottish Rite, Shrine and York Rite. On many occasions I was apprehensive about taking an officer position or learning the Ritual as just two examples, but I always found encouragement and support from my fellow brethren. If you are interested in taking a part in the Valley of Reading, I hope that you are, Please don't let your apprehension stop you. There are many members in this Valley who will give you the direction you need to succeed in whatever role you re interested in playing. A great starting point would be to attend our Spring Reunion on May 16, 2009 and make it known that you are interested in becoming an active member in the Valley of Reading. I am honored to have served the Valley of Reading as Most Wise Master of this Chapter of Rose Croix with the support of my Current and Past Officers. I am also honored to have served under our Consistory Line. As I have stated in the past, The Valley of Reading has a strong and dedicated leadership and is very well respected by other Valleys. I would like to personally congratulate our Commander-In-Chief, L. Donald Loos on an outstanding job. It is truly an honor to have served as one of your Officers. I would also like to wish Victor M. Frederick III and Herbert K. Swisher the best of luck and continued success in their new roles. We are fortunate to have these men leading us. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Officers and Past Officers of the Lodge of Perfection for all of their assistance this past year that I have spent as your Thrice Potent Master. It truly is a long journey, and try as one might, perfection is always a goal, not necessarily an accomplishment. Please remember our upcoming Reunion, May 16. We not only need new members, we really need participation from the ones we already have. Please look at the reunion as a chance to break bread with old friends, and to meet new ones as well. It has been said of all parts of Freemasonry that you will get out of it what you're willing to put in. How about putting in some time with your Brothers? Reach out your hand in Friendship and Brotherly Love, and I'm sure it will be gripped right back. Finally, remember that your heart is a temple wherein God may dwell. See to it that this Holy House is not profaned by unhallowed thoughts or that which is unclean. Live worthily the high profession you have made, and let your life reflect the love of God. A Tribute To Those Who Have Served As has been our custom on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 we will again pause to pay tribute to the presiding officers of the Lodge, Council, Chapter, and Consistory who will complete their term of office on May 31, These brethren have been faithful in the performance of their duties. They have accepted the responsibilities of their offices not only during their year as presiding officers but all along the line of going through the chairs. They have fully supported all of the activities of the Valley which includes Club participation. They have made many friends and the Valley of Reading is better and richer through the service that they have so unselfishly given. The true office of a Mason is to sow that others may reap, to work and plant for those who will follow in our footsteps. For only through kindness and giving of service and friendship and cheer can we learn the true meaning of living. Each of these brethren has fulfilled these attributes to the fullest measure. We are proud to honor: Brother John J. Tumolo, III, 32 Brother John R. Nester, 32 Thrice Potent Master Most Wise Master Brother David J. Dickson, 32 Brother L. Donald Loos, Jr., 33 Sovereign Prince Commander-in-Chief To them we say that the decoration that they will receive is not given as a memorial to their labors; but as an inspiration to continue the fine contribution that they are making to the Scottish Rite. A great Valley has every right to expect still greater accomplishments from these four brethren. Congratulations, with appreciation to each of the retiring officers.

50 YEAR MEMBERSHIP RECOGNITION Today, as we pick our way through this dizzy, giddy whirl of modern change and development, we give thought to leaving our mark on the walls we build, so that someone a thousand years from now may see what we have done. The brethren that we honor today have already left their mark; their works are everlasting, and they have lived in accordance with the truth and precepts of our order. The Masonic influence has long been felt in their lives as they passed through the corridors of the temple and practiced the truths, and mysteries of the order; they believed in them, and practiced them, and made them as integral part of their lives. They found that Masonry is a way of life a set of virtues and fundamental truths, which must be a living, vital part of our existence, not merely a series of ritualistic performances. It is a privilege and an honor to once again pay tribute to those who have reached their 50 th anniversary in Scottish Rite Masonry, a Milestone in their Masonic lives. CONGRATULATIONS to all of the following brethren. Proper honor will be bestowed upon them during our Spring Reunion, at which time those who are able to attend will receive their 50-year pins from the Commander-in-Chief. 9 Brethren and friends: Russell W. Baker, 33 Active for Pennsylvania 32 MASONIC LEARNING CENTER FOR CHILDREN, INC. I know that you are all aware of the financial developments that occurred and continue to occur in our Country over the past year. These developments have affected us personally and also areas of our fraternity. Specifically I want to relate to you some actions that have been taken in regard to our Learning Centers. A finance sub-committee of the Corporate Learning Center Board of Directors looked at the performance of each Learning Center in the following areas: 1) Local fundraising performance over a 3 year period. 2) The amount of funds in the Center s Board Restricted Funds (formerly the Board Endowment Fund). 3) The performance of each Learning Center in compliance with documents required to be submitted to headquarters in Lexington. Some examples are submission of required reports, minutes of Board of Governors meetings and submission of annual audits. Following this review a recommendation was presented to the entire Corporate Board of Directors. This recommendation included: Withhold Corporate funding of nine centers (four are in Pennsylvania Altoona, Erie, Scranton and Philadelphia) effective September 1, In Fiscal Year 2010 (beginning September 1, 2009) remaining centers will Receive $60, corporate support. In Fiscal Year 2011 (beginning September 1, 2010) remaining centers will Receive $50, corporate support. Implement the Board approved Bucket system of funding in Fiscal Year 2011 Develop a Co-pay system for Centers. In making this recommendation to the Corporate Board of Directors the committee also looked at funding projections through 2013 from the Corporate Benevolent Foundation and the CLC Board restricted funds. These calculations indicated that the budget for Fiscal year 2009 would have a $950, deficit with deficits of $1,400, in FY 2010; $2,400, in FY2011; 3,600, in FY2012 and $3,700, in FY2013 if nothing was done to reduce exposure to these unacceptable deficits. Although it was a very difficult decision to make all of the recommendations of the sub-committee were unanimously approved by the Board of Directors. What does this mean to the Learning Center in Reading. Basically it means that the local Board of Governors will have to work harder to raise funds for the Reading Center in order to maintain the current level of students. You will be proud to know that the success rate for those children completing training at the Reading Center and throughout the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction is in the 98-99% range. Every penny raised by local fundraising goes to further this training. I urge you to continue your support of the Reading Center. In the future they will need your support more than ever. With fraternal best wishes, Russell W. Baker, 33 Active for Pennsylvania

THINGS YOU OUGHT TO KNOW BY THE NUMBERS -- In the nine degrees to be performed this Reunion, there will be more than 200 Brethren of the Valley cast as the 230-plus characters to be portrayed, said Ill. Irvin D. Herring, 33º, Casting Chairman. Each degree required a total of three to five rehearsals usually less than two hours each, or a total for all of 60-plus hours in 32 rehearsals. It s amazing what five veteran Degree Masters and a regiment of dedicated volunteer actors accomplish. BULLETPROOF CURTAIN -- Between the stage and the auditorium there is a fireproof curtain that would drop automatically in the unlikely occurence of a fire to separate the audience from the stage area. That curtain is made of Kevlar, the same material used to make bulletproof vests. (While we are confident none in our audience would dislike a degree and draw a sidearm, how about tomatoproof?) 20 TH DEGREE ON THE ROAD Planning continues for the stirring 20th degree to travel within the Valley s jurisdiction in Ill. Robert W. Fries, 33º, has agreed to be the Degree Master for this presentation that is often referred to as the George Washington Degree. SIGN OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD In the Degrees of Rose Croix (17 th and 18 th ), the sign of the Good Shepherd is a representation of the Christ bearing his once lost, but now recovered, sheep upon his shoulders. It is a most impressive symbol and is employed most effectively. (Luke 15:37, John 10:11-18) [Source: Glossary of Phoenixmasonry] GIVING BLOOD HELPS YOUR CHARITY Masonic related 501(C)3 charities can receive donations of $10 for each unit of blood collected at Masonic facilities or during Masonic-sponsored blood drives. The Masonic Blood and Organ Donor Committee must OK donations prior to each blood drive. A key contact in the Valley of Reading for information and assistance is Brother Frank D. Caltagirone at (610) or frankd@comcast.net. SO MOTE IT BE A Mason follows a prayer with So Mote It Be, which can be translated to Let It Be So or So Shall It Be. After Amen, it is an additional sincere utterance of conviction or assent. THERE S A GOOD SEAT FOR YOU -- Our Marr Auditorium has nearly 1,200 comfortable seats, so you ll find the perfect place to appreciate the Spring Reunion on Saturday, May 16. Come early for the continental breakfast, enjoy the noon lunch, and wrap it up with dinner and the 32 nd Degree and it will cost you nothing more than showing your dues card. While you enjoy all that, let your lady have a great day on a trip with the Ladies Auxiliary that concludes with dinner back at the Cathedral. From the Scottish Rite Family Album: The Easter Bunny The Easter Bunny paid a visit to the Scottish Rite Cathedral on Saturday, April 4. Beginning at 10:30 a.m., an Easter egg hunt was held for children ages 1 to 8, and was followed by a delicious hot dog lunch with the Easter Bunny himself. By all accounts, it was a festive, fun time. That s what being in the Scottish Rite Family is all about! Meanwhile, a couple of Hot Dogs cook up the weenies. This has GOT to be a good one! The race is on! Everybody loves somebunny! Mmm Egg hunts always give me an appetite.

Patriots Class Honors Civil War Participants On Saturday, February 28th, Pennsylvania DeMolay held its annual Patriots Class, sponsored by the Valley of Reading, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite. This class is dedicated to all Patriots of our country. For this occasion PA DeMolay was graced by the presence of General Lewis Armistead and Driver Casper Carlisle, representing all the patriots from the American Civil War. Wait, wasn't Armistead a Confederate? Yes, he was, but he, too, was loyal to his cause, and a patriot for American ideals! PA DeMolay was proud to induct 3 new members in their honor. After the induction was complete, Driver Carlisle told his heroic and inspirational tale of bravery at the Battle of Gettysburg to the young men. Also present to offer their support were District Deputy Grand Masters Edward Stein (7) and Carl Swope (8), as well as several officers from the Valley of Reading. Following the ceremonies a dance and Guitar Hero Tournament were held. Ladies Fashion Show another Scottish Rite Success Story The Ladies Auxiliary of the Valley of Reading held their annual Fashion Show on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at the Scottish Rite Cathedral in West Reading. Ladies, both young and young at heart, numbering two hundred sixty five attended the event which traditionally ushers in the spring season with its "Fashions in Bloom" theme by showcasing spring fashions. This year the fashions were provided by Lovely models on the runway Boscov s Department Store. Models for this year s event Ladies of all ages love fashion were Joyce Auker, Carol Keen, Holly Jean Higgins, Margene Heckman, Cindy Hoffman and the Valley s very own office manager, Lois Ensslen. As is customary, the men of the Valley dressed to the hilt in bow tie and cummerbund waited on the ladies during the luncheon by serving drinks, cleaning tables, delivering door prizes and generally adding to the lighthearted atmosphere. This year, the ladies at the Fashion Show even marked a surprise visit from Thelma and Sadie, the Dutch Fashion Coordinators from New York!!!!! This year s fashion show raised approximately $ for the 32 Masonic Learning Center for Children for their important work of helping children with dyslexia. The sharp waitstaff is ready and waiting Next year's Fashion Show will be held on March 27, Sadie or is it Thelma?
