2 The Commander-in-Chief Ill. William H. Tennant, Jr., 33 Thrice Potent Master s Corner Andrew E. Weitzenkorn Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all at the Valley of Reading. Here we are settling into the depth of winter. There is still much to be done here in the Valley. We had a successful fall reunion on November 23. Twenty-five new Candidates received their 32 nd degree and have become members of our Valley. We hope to get many workers from this group. The Holiday Happenings proved to be the success it has always been. However I believe the Sovereign Princes out did themselves this year with some of the new additions to their programs. The performance of The Tuba Christmas, the Berks County Ballet, and of course the play performed by the Scottish Rite Players, were all very successful. If you missed Second Lieutenant Commander Kevin Barnhardt as Lincoln, you missed a wonderful performance. Thanks to The Train Club for their great displays. It is always a pleasure to watch the eyes and expressions of the kids, (young & old) as they view the several displays. The Clowns were great as always. Hiram s Scottish Riders did a fine job with the kids and the tattoos. Thanks to all who gave their time in the Live Nativity. Once again, none of these fine events could be produced and presented without the Assistance of the S.RV.C. which helps to fund what has become this Great Holiday Celebration. Thank you all. Before you know it, the Spring Reunion Date, Saturday, May 17, 2014, will be here. Take time to look for new members for the Valley over this period. Let s have a good size Class again. My Brethren, first of all I hope everyone had a very happy holiday season. Much has happened since our last notice and I'd like to thank all those who helped move our Scottish Rite forward. November s Fall Reunion attracted 25 Candidates. The Degree Work performed by all the bodies of the Scottish Rite was excellent and gave these new members a tremendous view into the workings of our organization. We now need to work on building a Spring Class which could surpass this one in size. Next, we had our Christmas celebration, with a live Nativity, elaborate train displays by the Train Club, trees decorated by each of the Bodies, Hiram's Scottish Riders doing "tattoos" for the kids and, of course, Santa Claus. It proved to be a very busy, but extremely worthwhile month of December. We are now looking forward to Spring and all that accompanies this time of year. Easter, Passover, the Feast of the Paschal Lamb and finally, our Spring Reunion, to which I alluded earlier. Not only would I like to see a Class as large or larger than the Class at the 2013 Fall Reunion, but it would be great to see more Brethren attend to witness the work. Those who participate in these degrees enjoy performing to an audience of their peers as well as the incoming Candidate Class. Keep in mind, as we strive for perfection, there is always something for us to learn, about life, about others and about ourselves. I look forward to seeing you at our Stated Meeting on January 28, Until then, be safe in your travels, be loyal and faithful to yourself and your family, and be true to your obligations. VALLEY NOTICE Is a publication of the four bodies of the Valley of Reading, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry for the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction and is the official notice of meetings, events and activities of the Valley. Editor Dick Miller, 32 Associate Editor - Ill. Blaine F. Fabian, 33 The Valley of Reading, A.A.S.R. P.O. Box 6013 West Reading, PA Phone: Fax: valley.of.reading@comcast.net 2
3 Sovereign Prince Speaks Stephen R. Higgins Most Wise Master s Moment Ill. Harry E. Hackman, Jr., 33 The New Year is upon us, the holiday decorations have been stored away and the events of late 2013 are now receding into memory. I hope that your memories are pleasant ones - of good health, of great meals, of gatherings with friends and family and of the 2013 Holiday Happenings at the Cathedral. Each of the four bodies in the Valley of Reading traditionally is entrusted with a specific responsibility during the Masonic year. In the case of the Council of Princes of Jerusalem, it is overseeing the Holiday Happenings at the Cathedral (formerly named the Family Life Celebration ). However the success of this event throughout the years is far more than simply the result of the activities of the Council. It is the outcome of the efforts and close cooperation of all four bodies as well as the Valley of Reading Ladies Auxiliary, the Scottish Rite Volunteer Committee (SRVC) and uncounted individuals. On its own the Council could not have ensured the success of the event. That has been the result the spirit of cooperation that Freemasonry fosters in the Valley of Reading and I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to everyone involved. I hope and trust that spirit will continue for many years to come. May all of the members of the Valley and families have a happy, healthful, and prosperous New Year. Winter is here, the holiday season is over. What a boring time of year. Except for those lucky few who migrate to warmer climates, the rest of us just settle in and wait. The good news is there are still many activities going on in the Valley to keep you from becoming depressed. We welcome the 25 new members from the Fall Reunion. Come out to our January meeting, fellowship during the dinner and join us at the meeting. The Valley can only be of value to you if you participate. Our goal is to have good fun and fellowship. The Feast of the Paschal Lamb will be held on Sunday, March 23, 2014 at 2:00pm. Take a special note since it is held earlier this year due to the Jazz Festival. For all of the newest members the Feast is a celebration of the lives of our deceased brethren. We will remember each brother called home by the Great Architect during this past year. The Feast is open to everyone, so bring your family, friends, and neighbors. This is a great opportunity to show non-masons how Masons respect and treat each other through this solemn and respectful observance. The Combined County Club Ladies Night is coming up. What a great time. great food, great entertainment and great fellowship, what more could you ask for? Think there is nothing for you to do at the Valley? Check out the schedule of all the events coming up this year. It is conveniently printed in this issue in a form that can be cut out and carried in your wallet. I always take the time and put the events on my calendar now, so I will not miss them later in the year. Hope to see you all at our Stated Meeting in January. 3
