1 Spring Reunion Saturday, May 16, 2015 Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite VALLEY OF READING READING, PENNSYLVANIA
2 HOW ABOUT YOU? When you receive your meeting notices do not cast them aside without reading them. Each one of our publications does and will contain something of interest to you. We plan some splendid features for each meeting and Reunion, and the only way you can keep yourself posted on what is going on is to read your notices. NOTICE: ALL MEMBERS We extend to you a cordial invitation to enjoy all the meals during the Reunion. BE FRATERNAL When you attend a Scottish Rite Reunion, do not sit down in a corner and expect every member to come and shake hands with you, and in case they fail to do so, complain that the members are not fraternal and lack sociability. It is no more their duty to do so than it is yours. Every member should aim to promote the fraternal spirit by saying a friendly word of greeting to the other members. Try it. You ll like it. The dues are now payable. If you have not paid yours - please do so NOW. Send to: Scottish Rite Office PO Box 6013 Reading, Pa Pay by credit card at or call the office (for dues only) at Phone: Fax Valleyofreading.org valley.of.reading@comcast.net When you pay your dues do not forget your Voluntary contribution to the Building Fund and The Hospitaler s Fund.

The two Scottish Rite Masons who sign the petition have a responsibility that does not end with their signature on the petition. If you invite a guest to a gathering at your home, you make sure that he meets all your guests, and is made welcome and comfortable. Isn't the Master Mason whom you recommend to Scottish Rite Freemasonry entitled to the same courtesy? As his sponsor, is it not your duty to take an interest in his progress? It seems to us that it is, and that you should see to it that he fully understands the fine lessons of our degrees. If you recommend a man to the Scottish Rite, satisfy yourself that he is receiving that for which you recommended him. To do so is but a Masonic courtesy and it is also your duty as a Scottish Rite Mason. Let's all give this matter some serious consideration. It will certainly bring forth good results if you attend the conferring of the degrees at our Reunions.

11 SCOTTISH RITE DECLARATION OF PRINCIPLES This Supreme Council reaffirms its unswerving loyalty to the fundamental purpose of Freemasonry, which purpose from time immemorial has been to improve and strengthen the character of the individual man, and through the individual, the character of the community, reinforcing those spiritual and moral values which give the community its strength and stability. This Supreme Council believes that this purpose is to be attained by laying a broad basis of principle upon which men of every race, country, sect, and opinion may unite. Believing that good and true men can be trusted to act well and wisely, this Supreme Council considers it the duty of the Fraternity to impress upon its members the principles of personal righteousness and personal responsibility, to enlighten them as to those things which make for human welfare, and to inspire them with that feeling of charity, or well-wishing, toward all mankind which will move them to translate principle and conviction into action. To that end, Freemasonry requires of its members a belief in God and encourages faith in God s divine purposes and worship of God in conformity with the dictates of individual conscience. It stands for truth and justice, liberty, and enlightenment, fraternity and philanthropy. This Supreme Council expects of its members strict obedience to the laws of the land, and respect for their country's flag. Such principles unite men and encourage the pursuit by them individually and collectively of worthy endeavors and the attainment of the purposes inherent in them. In that unity human character achieves its highest unfolding and provides man's best hope for peace on earth and good will among men. To the furtherance of these principles, all our ritual is directed and all our efforts are aimed. To their furtherance each Master Mason has pledged himself, and at the portal of the Scottish Rite has renewed that pledge. This Supreme Council discountenances and rejects any attempt by any international groups or confederations of Scottish Rite Supreme Councils to legislate for individual Supreme Councils. Recognizing that principles unite men, that programs sometimes divide them, and that the preservation of unity of purpose and devotion to principle is essential to Freemasonry the Supreme Council affirms its continued adherence to that ancient and approved rule of Freemasonry which forbids the discussion within tiled doors of creeds, politics, or other topics apt to excite personal animosities. This Supreme Council further affirms its conviction that it is not only contrary to the fundamental principles of Freemasonry, but exceedingly dangerous to its unity, strength, usefulness and welfare for Masonic Bodies in their official capacity to take formal action or attempt to exercise pressure or influence for or against any particular legislative project or proposal, or in any way to attempt to procure the election or appointment of Governmental officials, whether executive, legislative, or judicial, or to influence them, whether or not members of the Fraternity, in the performance of their official duties. 24 50- YEAR MEMBERSHIP RECOGNITION Today, as we pick our way through this dizzy, giddy, whirl of modern change and development, we give thought to leaving our mark on the walls we build so that someone a thousand years from now may see what we have done. The brethren that we honor today have already left their mark; their works are everlasting, and they have lived in accordance with the truth and precepts of our order. The Masonic influence has long been felt in their lives as they passed through the corridors of the temple and practiced the truths and mysteries of the order; they believed in them, and practiced them, and made them an integral part of their lives. They found that Masonry is a way of life a set of virtues and fundamental truths which must be a living, vital part of our existence, not merely a series of ritualistic performances. It is a privilege and an honor to once again pay tribute to those who have reached their 50 th anniversary in Scottish Rite Masonry, a milestone in their Masonic lives. CONGRATULATIONS to all of the following brethren. Proper honor will be bestowed upon them during the Saturday session of our Spring Reunion, at which time those who are able to attend will receive their 50-year pins from the Commander-in-Chief. Those who cannot attend will receive their pins through the mail. Carroll S. Arnold J. Eugene Astheimer David J. Baker Jr. Leroy E. Bechtel John W. Blosenski Harold H. Corl Calvin A. Crum Clifford L. 31 A TRIBUTE TO THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED As has been our custom, on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 we will again pause to pay tribute to the presiding officers of the Lodge, Council, Chapter, and Consistory who will complete their term of office on May 31, These brethren have been faithful in the performance of their duties. They have accepted the responsibilities of their offices not only during their year as presiding officers but all along the line of "going through the chairs." They have fully supported all of the activities of the Valley which includes Club participation. They have made many friends and the Valley of Reading is better and richer through the service that they have so unselfishly given. The true office of a Mason is to sow that others may reap, to work and plant for those who will follow in our footsteps. For only through kindness and giving of service and friendship and cheer can we learn the true meaning of living. Each of these brethren has fulfilled these attributes to the fullest measure. We are proud to honor: Brother Ronald J. Dalius, 32 Thrice Potent Master Brother Craig W. Shaffer, 32E Sovereign Prince Brother Arthur K. Armstrong, 32E Most Wise Master Ill. William H. Tennant, Jr., 33E Commander-in-Chief To them we say that the decoration that they will receive is not given as a memorial to their labors; but as an inspiration to continue the fine contribution that they are making to the Scottish Rite. A great Valley has every right to expect still greater accomplishments from these four brethren. Congratulations and appreciation to each of the retiring officers.
32 BRING YOUR PASSPORT TO EACH REUNION The primary purpose of your 32 Masonic Passport is to encourage you to experience all of the degrees presented by the Valleys of the Scottish Rite 32 Masonry. Through the lessons of these degrees, we look to the past for great and immovable truths of the ages. At the same time, we are reminded that these truths are not locked in the past, but rather must serve to guide us as we move into the unknown future. The Valley of Reading schedules degrees at least once in five years. Some degrees are required at each Reunion. Popular degrees are exemplified more frequently. When you witness a degree in any Valley within the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, that Valley will validate the appropriate page in your passport. This schedule will assist you in witnessing all the Scottish Rite Degrees. Reading Lodge of Perfection 4 Each Reunion 5 Fall Fall Spring Fall Fall Fall Spring Fall Spring Each Reunion C. 33 You Belong to a County Club, Enjoy Your Scottish Rite Membership Fully! Every Brother who becomes a Scottish Rite Mason in the Valley of Reading is automatically a member of one of the Scottish Rite Clubs (generally referred to as County Clubs ). The Club you belong to is determined by the location of your lodge or your residence. These Clubs offer you local opportunity to enjoy Scottish Rite fellowship, social activities, membership development, and general support of the Valley of Reading. Schuylkill County Club Members who reside in Schuylkill County Ontelaunee Club Members who reside in Northern Berks County and are primarily members of Vaux Lodge No. 406 and Huguenot Lodge No. 377 Pagoda Club Members who reside in the greater Reading and Southern Berks County areas. 34 OUR SCOTTISH RITE CLUBS We pay tribute to the officers of our City and County Clubs, to the founders and leaders, past and present, and to the members for their splendid cooperation in promoting the Scottish Rite Way and the Masonic understanding and fellowship that go with it. Through a program of year-round activities, these clubs have succeeded in creating and keeping alive an interest in the Scottish Rite which has resulted in a creditable growth of membership from the areas which they serve. 35 CANDIDATES PLEASE READ Your marshals will be glad to assist you in making the reunion an enjoyable one. A little patience may be required but if you follow their instructions you and your fellow members of the class will experience the least inconvenience. Candidates will please report at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, 310 S. Seventh Ave., West Reading, PA at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2015, to register and receive your credentials. The balance of your initiation fee is due at this time, if not paid in full previously. Any candidates who were previously approved will please arrange to be present at the same time. Continental breakfast will be served to the candidates beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday. Dues to May 31, 2016 are due and payable during the Reunion. VERY IMPORTANT The Constitution of the Supreme Council stipulates that Scottish Rite bodies confer the following degrees as the minimum requirements: in the Lodge, the 4 ; in the Consistory, the 32, plus a minimum of three additional degrees which exemplify one or more of the core values of the Rite. In order that a candidate may be eligible for advancement in the Rite, he must have witnessed the required degree or degrees in the preceding body. If a candidate does not witness the required degree, whether by choice or by circumstances, he will be held over until the time of the next exemplification. Therefore, if you wish to receive the 32 at this Reunion you must be present for all of the degrees scheduled unless you are already a member of a Lodge of Perfection; then you may omit the 4.
