2 FALL 2015 VALLEY NEWS AND VIEWS PAGE 2 DENNIS R BARLOW AND EDWARD G RINARD RECEIVE THE 33 At the 203rd Annual Meeting of the Supreme Council AASR, NMJ, USA held in Indianapolis, Indiana on September 1, 2015 Dennis R Barlow and Edward G Rinard received their 33. Ed is a member of the York Rite Bodies of Marietta and the Eastern Star where he served as Worthy Patron eleven times. He is retired from Ormet Aluminum and served on the Frontier Edward G Rinard, 33 and Dennis R Barlow, 33 Board of Education for twenty years. The Valley of Cambridge had the largest proportional representation of any Ohio Valley at this Supreme Council with 38 members and spouses joining Denny, Deanna, Ed and Laymra for this memorable occasion. The Valley and its members congratulate Denny and Ed on their well deserved recognition. It is about that time of year again. Dues notices are coming. Once again there is no increase for either the Valley or the Supreme Council. Along with the dues notices comes the question about dues cards. Hopefully most everyone remembers that they are made of plastic and look something like a credit card and are not replaced each year. They are now easier to get but if you need a replacement please let us know here at the office. We have been informed that the Cambridge Concert Association will not be presenting programs this year. There is some discussion about the future but as for now there is nothing scheduled. Just in case you missed it in the August edition of The Northern Light on page 13 was an article by Jen Navicky of the Children s Dyslexia Center here at the Valley of Cambridge. Congratulations Jen. Your hard work on behalf of the children are appreciated. Over the summer I have received a couple of unexpected donations from our members. One was put into the Valley s Charity and Welfare fund as requested and one was given to be used as I saw fit. FROM THE SECRETARY S DESK That one went to the Children s Dyslexia Center. Thanks for thinking of us. Just a couple of reminders about membership. We still award a Perpetual/Life membership for a top line signer on ten petitions in one year. We also still have a clergy program that will pay the initiation fees for ministers to the Blue Lodge and the Scottish Rite does not charge ministers an initiation fee. This is not used very often but they are still available. I recently received DVD s for the 19 Brothers of the Trail and the Introduction to the 32. We plan to get these shown at one of our stated meetings in the near future (2nd Monday from September to June). Tim Oliver, Thrice Potent Master, is making sure we get fed well at our stated meeting so come on by, have a bite to eat, and enjoy the show. Sincerely and fraternally Tom Fisher

5 FALL 2014 VALLEY NEWS AND VIEWS PAGE 5 CHILDREN S DYSLEXIA CENTER NEWS Our summer sessions this year consisted of two weeks in June directed towards consolidating last year's knowledge and two weeks in August to help children prepare for the new school year. I spent the rest of the summer making sure our Center continues to operate according to the high standards set by CDC Headquarters in Lexington. There were quite a few updates communicated to all Center Directors during our May conference. When our fall sessions began, seven new children were oriented to our lesson plan format, our concept sequence and our Orton-Gillingham procedures. These are the foundation of the O-G approach and are extremely important parts that help children experience success. In May a new and exciting research study from Stanford University was published in the journal Brain and Language. Researchers found that when learners focus their attention on certain, specific word parts, learning to read becomes easier and they become more efficient readers. This research strongly reinforces that classroom reading teachers need training in skills that help students focus their attention and that "all phonics is not equally effective." Happily this coincides with what the Scottish Rite Dyslexia Centers via the Massachusetts General Hospital Dyslexia Unit have been advocating since the early 1990's. Now, if we can just get the schools to buy into the current research and teacher education programs to provide this training, all children could learn to read more easily and efficiently. (I have no apologies for bluntly pointing this out since when you are right; you are right!) **** As I finalize two very generous grants we received last year from the Kiwanis Foundation and the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio's Gulfport Energy Fund, I realize the benefits we received from them. The tutors worked as a group to complete the Kiwanis teacher-training program and therefore renewed/revived our O-G knowledge and skills. Needless to say, this also benefited the participating trainees. While completing the Gulfport Energy Grant requirements, we showed that O-G works for both an elementary child and a student entering high school. By following the same curriculum at two totally different paces, the tutors can satisfy the needs of most every age. We watched a shy, apprehensive 2 nd grader gain confidence and begin this year by doing a very cute "happy dance" on our front porch. We also watched an older student marvel at some of the subtleties in the English language that help expand his vocabulary so that he will be able to tackle high school reading requirements. We again thank both the Kiwanis and Gulfport Energy for funding these two worthwhile projects. We now head into our 15th year of using the Scottish Rite Orton-Gillingham curriculum for tutoring children at no cost to families and we remain eternally thankful that we have this wonderful program available in our area. support. Again, we thank all of you for your Jen Navicky, Director DAN ARNOLD, 33 AND DAVID JACOBS, 33 RECEIVE DEMOLAY AWARD On Friday July 24, 2015 Dan C Arnold, 33 and David L Jacobs, 33 received the Honorary Legion of Honor from DeMolay International. These awards were presented at Kent State University during the annual State Conclave for Ohio DeMolay. This award is presented to Master Masons who have contributed outstanding service to DeMolay and/or service to humanity. Illustrious Brother Arnold presently serves the Valley of Cambridge as Sovereign Prince and Illustrious Brother Jacobs serves as Commander in Chief. Dan Randy Williams, Dan Arnold and David Jacobs Arnold, 33 presented remarks on behalf of the class of 2015 recipients of the Honorary Legion of Honor and Randy A Williams, 33 was the presenter for the ceremony. Congratulations to Dan and David. It is an honor for the Valley of Cambridge to have these hard working members involved with one of the Masonic youth organization.
