2 The Commander-in-Chief Kevin S. Barnhardt, 33 Thrice Potent Master s Corner Dennis F. Shaffer, 32 What s the Point?! Many members of the Valley question what the point system is and what it means to a member. For many years, the valley has had in place a system whereby points are earned by members based on activities, attendance and participation in preparation for, and participation in, the reunions in May and November. Presently, recognition is earned at 400 points and a wall plaque for 1,000 points. It s NOT my intention to recreate the point system, rather it s to match the point system to reflect the actual time and effort expended by members AND encourage new or inactive members to get involved and enhance the efforts of the valley membership and receive well deserved recognition for their efforts. I have appointed a task force with three expectations: 1. To consider a different recognition for 1,000 points 2. To consider recognition for points earned over 1,000 points 3. To evaluate the point system and recommend enhancements, where necessary The committee is: Ill. Bro. Herbert K. Swisher, Bro. Samuel Wandzilak and myself. If anyone has ideas or suggestions, please contact Bro. Herb, Bro. Sam or myself with suggestions. Spes mea in deo est, Kevin Kevin S. Barnhardt, 33 Commander-in-Chief Happy New Year Brethren! I hope everyone enjoyed the Holiday Season and may the Grand Architect of the Universe Bless everyone with a Healthy, Happy and Prosperous New Year! Some of us may miss 2018, while others may feel relieved that it is over; whatever your feelings are, one thing is certain, 2018 is gone and 2019 is upon us. I m reminded of a story I heard many years ago about a farmer who was inspecting his son s tilling of a field, for the most part the rows were plowed in nice even and straight rows but there were a couple of areas that were crooked. When he asked his son what happened, his son replied that he didn t know why they were crooked. His father said, son when you were looking ahead and in front of you the rows are straight and even, it s when you look back at what you did that caused the plow to go astray. The moral of the story is: Let s not dwell on our past, whether good or bad, that we lose focus on what is before us now and in the future! Sincerely and Fraternally, Dennis Dennis F. Shaffer Thrice Potent Master 2

4 LADIES AUXILIARY THANK YOU It takes many hands to put together our annual Holiday Happenings celebration. And this year it took a lot of cookies as well! Thanks to all of you who helped to supply those goodies. Also, a word of appreciation to the ladies who gave of their time as hostesses. Our Train Club deserves a special thanks for their contribution, as well. Working in co-operation with one another, we got it done. Thanks to all for your help. Looking forward to seeing all of you at our next stated meeting, January 22, May your new year be filled with happiness and good health. 4

5 Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Reading, Pennsylvania MODEL RAILROADING CLUB Established 1998 ON TRACK WITH THE MODEL RAILROADING CLUB As we write this, the MODEL RAILROADING CLUB has begun wrapping up its toy and model train exhibit from during the Valley s 2018 Holiday Happenings. Fueled by an article published in the Reading Eagle Newspaper on November 22 nd and on the Newspaper s website, readingeagle.com by reporter Ron Devlin, and TV coverage aired on Channel 69 WFMZ-TV News segment One Tank Trip with Karin Mallett, One Tank Trip: Scottish Rite Cathedral was broadcast November 28 th and shown on the TV Station s website, wfmz.com ; the toy and model railroad exhibit was a huge success drawing RECORD crowds to the Valley s Holiday Happenings all through both weekends. It safe to conclude that the club s toy and model train display with major operating layouts in G, 0, S, HO, and N gauge remains the highlight of the Holiday Happenings. Did you happen to hear train whistles blowing during the Holiday Happenings? NEW FOR THIS YEAR on the S gauge layout was two buttons were the children could blow the train whistles. The train whistles drew a lot of attention from children of all ages! This year marked 20 years that the MODEL RAILROADING CLUB has been participating in the Valley s Holiday Happenings!! 6 The Holidays are over, and a New Year stares us in the face. I m sure we all made New Year s resolutions that we have absolutely no intentions of keeping past the second month. Hopefully, one of the resolutions was to get more involved, socially; and this is the ONE you intend to keep. The winter doldrums can be very somber and one can slip into a period of hibernation; as the bears tend to do. Don t hibernate on your favorite chair, but get out and socialize. The Scottish Rite Golden Eagles is the perfect place to get out and interact with people of like mind. Our meetings are ALWAYS the 3 rd Wednesday of each month in the banquet room of the Scottish Rite Cathedral at 430 S.7 th Ave., in West Reading. Free parking and a lovely warm room to meet. We always have a great well rounded full meal served by Dori Martin Catering of Fleetwood for $8.00. No tips, no tax, not even washing the dishes or preparing food. Just enjoy. Please call Don Loos at to make reservations so we have an accurate count and enough food for all. Always an entertaining program, followed by a brief business meeting where we discuss ongoing trips offered by the Golden Eagles. The best part in membership, which runs from September to September is only $10.00 for the full year. Membership is open to ALL Masons, Non-Masons, Male, Female. Even if you did not make us a New Years resolution, give us a try anyway. Hope to greet you in January. January February Program Blue Marsh The Pleasant Valley by Paul and Kathy Miller Meal Pepper Steak, potatoe filling, peas and pearl onions, salad, dessert, coffee & tea Program Entertainment by Carl Hausman Meal - Meatloaf w/pineapple glaze, mashed potatoes, dried corn, salad, dessert, coffee & tea 6
