2 Thrice Potent Master s Corner The Commander-in-Chief Ill. William H. Tennant, Jr., 33 Andrew E. Weitzenkorn As I begin my term as your Commander-in-Chief, I would like to thank the members of the Valley of Reading for the honor they have bestowed upon me. I have received many congratulations, many words of encouragement and offers of assistance. I appreciate all of them. I want to especially thank those who are directly responsible for my being at this position and that of course would have to be Ill Victor M. Frederick Past Commander-in-Chief. When he asked me to get in the consistory line four years ago I was taken back, to say the least. Next of course would be Ill Bro Herbert K Swisher, Past Commander-in-Chief, who I followed thru the line. What a great example he has set for all will who follow him. To all of the new presiding officers, I am looking forward to working with each of you. We can do much for the Valley by being the driving force behind it. We will face many challenges in the future and we need to be together to accomplish what I am sure we all want. That would be to leave this Valley better than we found it. I intend to continue to support the many programs my predecessors have established and I would hope you all would support me in these events. The Lynn Brandt Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Friday, September 13, at the Moccasin Run golf course in Chester County. This is a beautiful course and I am sure you will all enjoy it. The Feast of Tishri will be held here at the Cathedral, on October 4 th. This will be a Stag, black tie event for Scottish Rite and Blue lodge members. The speaker this year will be Ill. Rev. William D. Hartman, 33. Come out and enjoy. Also this year there will be A Masonic play performed on the 1 st Saturday night, of Holiday Happenings. It is once again open to the public and we will be presenting The Last Full Measure, a Civil war drama that we all should enjoy. We need to work on membership. We cannot continue spiraling downward as we have in the past several years. We all need to look around our lodges and neighborhoods and ask those individuals to think about Scottish Rite. There is a new Membership Committee and you will be receiving information regarding this in the near future. We have four stated meetings a year and the attendance at them has been somewhat lacking in the past. Call one of your Brothers that have not been here for some time and ask him to accompany you to the Valley. Dinner begins at 6PM. Bring your ladies along and enjoy the meal for $8.00 each. The ladies always have a program while we are in the business meeting. Try it, I am sure you will enjoy the fellowship and get to see some of the Brothers and their Ladies that you may not have seen for some time. Brothers, we need help here at the Valley for the Reunions. Stage Crew, Sound, Lighting, Wardrobe. It takes many back stage persons to support what is being presented on stage. Please contact myself, or the Valley office to help out. If you would like to try the Stage itself; we will find a place for you whether a speaking or a non-speaking role. You will meet many of the Brothers at rehearsals that you would normally not run into and believe me. You will form some lasting friendships. Come out and support the Valley. Hope to see you soon. Brethren, I want to congratulate my counterparts in the other Bodies within the Valley of Reading upon their elevations and thank those who have just served in those capacities for the past year. It is an honor and a privilege to serve Reading Lodge of Perfection as its Thrice Potent Master. I realize that I have some large shoes to fill, but know that those who have served before me will be there to make sure I do just that. That's what this Lodge is all about. Over the last 8 years, I have not only learned an enormous amount about Scottish Rite Masonry, but have made some of the best friends and associates I have ever known. The Lodge of Perfection exists to handle the purse strings of the Valley and even during the lean years of the recession, kept this Valley in the black. I only hope that during my tenure we can continue to do the same. Most members of the Valley of Reading know the Lodge of Perfection for its fine work at the Reunion exemplifying the 14 degree. I have had the privilege of participating in this degree, one of the most beautiful and rewarding degrees of the Scottish Rite. Please extend my invitation to the Reunions to any of your brethren who are not yet members of the Valley, but who may be interested in furthering their knowledge of Freemasonry. I look forward to seeing and greeting you all at the Stated Meeting on Tuesday, October 22, Let us try to make this coming year one of the best for this Valley and for all of Scottish Rite Masonry. THE VALLEY NOTICE Is a publication of the four bodies of the Valley of Reading, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry for the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction and is the official notice of meetings, events and activities of the Valley. Editor Dick Miller, 32 Associate Editor - Ill. Blaine F. Fabian, 33 The Valley of Reading, A.A.S.R. P.O. Box 6013 West Reading, PA Phone: Fax: valley.of.reading@comcast.net 2

3 Sovereign Prince Speaks Stephen R. Higgins Most Wise Master s Moment Ill. Harry E. Hackman, Jr., 33 Since its inception Blue Lodge Freemasonry has always attracted membership on the basis of its commitment to three areas of human endeavor in the pursuit of the perfection of man: the philosophical, the charitable and the fraternal. This is no less true of Scottish Rite Masonry in which the Master Mason is offered the opportunity to renew his pledges and advance his Masonic knowledge. The Valley of Reading offers an opportunity for each of its members to experience these endeavors.the philosophical aspect of the Rite can be experienced in the Degrees offered at the two yearly Reunions in the Spring and Fall. The Degrees admonish the members to remember the broad Masonic principals of individual duty to God, family and community, high spiritual and moral conduct and unswerving civic responsibility and apply them to their daily lives. The work of the Learning Center has become the focus of the Valley s charitable endeavors in and as an important point of contact with the community at large. Last but certainly not least: the fraternal aspect can be experienced at the stated meeting, the Reunions both during and in the preparatory gatherings and rehearsals, and at the numerous social events scheduled throughout the year. Every member of the Valley of Reading has the opportunity to experience Scottish Rite Masonry in all its aspects. However the extent to which you as an individual member does is a personal matter. I urge you to become involved to the extent that you can and that your particular talents or interests will permit. It is a cliché in Masonry that you only get out of it what you put into it--- but a cliché is a cliché because it is true. It may be that you as an individual are not active because you are not entirely happy with some part of the Valley s programs or courses of action or feel that it has not lived up to its promises. However the Valley, much like the individual Masons who make it up, is a work in progress. It is engaged in striving toward a perfection that may never be truly realized but nevertheless must be pursued; and that striving is simply an expansion of the Masonic Journey you began as an individual when you took your first obligation. I cannot stress it more--- become involved. Attend Stated Meetings, Reunions and social functions. Talk with your brethren; make your ideas and concerns known to the Valley leadership. With the beginning of the new Masonic, I am both proud and honored to be able to be a small part of that leadership and can assure you that we will listen. Do not be the kind of individual who never votes yet always complains about what their government is doing. I would like to thank the Valley of Reading for electing and installing me Most Wise Master. I consider it a privilege to serve the Valley for the ensuing year. At the time I was entered into my Lodge there was an old Past Master who had two comments to all new members. First: I never went to Lodge that I didn t get something out of it; sometimes it was just a piece of pie but I always got something out of it. Second: You will only get out of Freemasonry what you put into it. Brethren if you re not getting something out of the Scottish Rite you re not attending. Join me and the other officers this year by attending several meetings and other Valley sponsored events. I think you will find that you have been missing many good times and much good fellowship. I congratulate Herb Swisher, Dick Miller, Bob Baessler and Tom Gamon IV on the completion of their very successful year. Thank you for your leadership and time. Congratulations and welcome to all the new members from the spring reunion. If you are like the rest of us you are probably trying to figure out what this Scottish Rite stuff is all about. Do not feel alone, after having been a member of the Scottish Rite for over 20 years I am still trying to figure it out. The only thing you really need to know is we are here for fun and fellowship. To participate all you need to do is attend the reunions and activities. For the little time you spend the friendships and fellowships you will create will more than make up for the effort. Lastly give a friend a petition for the fall reunion and share the fellowship. The summer time in Freemasonry is a time to relax and refresh. Enjoy yourself and regenerate for what is always a busy fall. Don t forget that we do have some actives over the summer. Join us on August 3, 2013 at the Family Picnic for good times and fellowship. Bring the whole family and show them what the Scottish Rite is all about. Have a safe, healthy and happy summer! See you in the Fall! Class Photograph by Bro. Harold E. Hoch, 32 Presiding Officers Photographs by Bro. Rodney E. Small, 32 PTPM Thank you Brethren 3

9 HOSPITALER AWARDS SCHOLARSHIP Illustrious Marvin G. Speicher, 33, announced that the Hospitaler s fund has awarded the 2013 Valley of Reading Scholarship to Benjamin J. Mercadante. Ben will be attending Penn College of Technology in Williamsport, PA. He is the son of Matthew J. and Colleen M. Mercadante. The purpose of the Valley of Reading Scottish Rite Scholarship Program is to be of assistance and encouragement to young men and women with a high school education desiring to acquire training in trades, business, technical, vocational or career programs and, who have been accepted in accredited schools offering such programs. The training programs (Certificate or Associate Degree) typically are two years in length; however, the time required for completion may vary. Scholarships are for one year, awarded annually. Students entering the second year of a training program are also eligible and encouraged to apply. Illustrious Brother Speicher also thanks the members of the Valley of Reading who included a donation to the Hospitaler s Fund along with their dues payment. FASHION SHOW THANKS On April 13 the Ladies Auxiliary sponsored another successful fashion show. A very big THANK YOU to the beautiful models, great servers, the many men who helped set up Friday night, the ladies of the auxiliary who brought in wonderful door prizes, the fashion show committee who worked hard and especially to all the ladies who attended the fashion show. Without all of this help a successful show would not happen. As a result $5000 will be given to the Children s Dyslexia Center of Reading. Again, many thanks. Helen Hummel Fashion Show Chairwoman MEMBERSHIP The Valley of Reading does not go dark over the summer. The Valley sponsors many interesting convenient and enjoyable social activities during the summer months. Check in this newsletter for the activity details. Make it your goal this summer to bring a perspective new member to one of the Valley functions. The family picnic held on August 3, 2013 at the Reading Leiderkranz is a great opportunity to bring not only your family but also a perceptive new member and enjoy the fun. Perhaps you can also bring an old member who left his membership lapse and encourage him to restore his membership. Only we can bring new members into the Valley. We have control of our destiny. Let s promote Freemasonry and the Valley to our family and friends. We have a great time in Freemasonry and in the Scottish Rite, let s not hide it. We should be focused at bringing new members into our Lodges and our Valley. Grand Lodge has given us many tools to encourage good men to join the Fraternity. Healthy Lodges will in turn makes a healthy Valley. The summer months are a great time to get petitions. Need a petition? Petitions can be printed off the Valley WEB site, contact me or the Valley office and we can send you one. Starting in September we will be actively engaging our membership and perspective members to obtain candidates for the fall reunion. If your Lodge needs a program this fall or next year please contact me and we will have a program on the Valley of Reading and the Scottish Rite ready for you. Have a great summer! Harry E.
