2 The Commander-in-Chief Ill. William H. Tennant, Jr., 33 Thrice Potent Master s Corner Andrew E. Weitzenkorn As we make our way thru winter, we need to pause to remember our Brethren, who may be ill, house bound or living alone. Let us get around to spending some fraternal moments with them so each will know that you and all of our Brothers care about their well-being. If during the time spent with these brethren, you can attend to a need of theirs, it will remembered as an act of Brotherhood which will be remembered. Let us demonstrate to them the value of the Fraternity and Consistory as well. These members are not alone. As we pass through January we will be preparing for the upcoming Spring Reunion on Saturday, May 17, Few of the Brethren realize how much is involved in the planning for each of the reunion events. Decisions are made to determine which of the degrees are to be portrayed as well as the casting of the many different parts that are in each degree of the repertoire of the Consistory. Some degrees require dozens of actors. If you have never been involved in the degrees and rehearsals here at the Valley you have missed much of the fun and the friendships that you will acquire by being part of the degree work and reunions here at the Valley of Reading. Let us participate! Get involved! Once you take the step you will be mad at yourself for not doing it sooner. Look for Blue Lodge members who you know will make good Scottish Rite Members. Let us have petitions arrive in the Valley office by the dozens. Make the Spring Reunion of May 2014 a reunion to be enjoyed and remembered. Brethren, it has been a long, hard winter, but spring is right around the corner. Spring brings fair weather and Easter and Passover. Easter and Passover for members of Consistory bring a solemn Ceremony of Remembrance for those of our members who have passed through the West Gate. The Feast Of The Pascal Lamb will be commemorated on Sunday, March 23, This is a beautiful family affair we should all attend. We also have our Spring Reunion on Saturday, May 17, and I hope to see all of you there. The Degree Work exemplified at our reunions is definitely worth seeing. These Degrees help each of us understand Scottish Rite Masonry even better. Please consider this a personal invitation to attend our Reunion and enjoy the work. VALLEY NOTICE Is a publication of the four bodies of the Valley of Reading, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry for the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction and is the official notice of meetings, events and activities of the Valley. Editor Dick Miller, 32 Associate Editor - Ill. Blaine F. Fabian, 33 The Valley of Reading, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite P.O. Box 6013 West Reading, PA Phone: Fax: valley.of.reading@comcast.net 2
3 Sovereign Prince Speaks Stephen R. Higgins Most Wise Master s Moment Ill. Harry E. Hackman, Jr., 33 I believe I can say without contradiction that thus far this has been a nasty winter, given the amount of snow and the subzero temperatures. Fortunately, I can also say that no matter how bad the winter, spring will ultimately arrive. For the Valley of Reading spring begins early with the Combined County Club Ladies Night on March 1. It is the first of many social gatherings of the spring and is a great opportunity for members and their wives from all parts of the Valley to gather, enjoy good food, good fellowship and good entertainment. Other family oriented events include: Lancaster County Club s Spring Fling (March 28), Chester County Club s Ladies Night (April 2), the Ladies Auxiliary Fashion Show (April 12) and the Easter Egg Hunt on (April 19). This spring the Valley is not wanting for male only events either. There is the Schuylkill County Club Stag Seafood Night (April 9), the Good Fellowship Club Spring Stag (April 23) and the Chester County Club s Master Masons Night (May 7). On the serious side, the Feast of the Paschal Lamb (March 23) will remember all those members of the Valley who have passed through the West Gate during the preceding year. It is a moving and beautiful service open to the public. Another event of ritualistic importance is the spring session of the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection (April 15). Finally, do not forget that the entire Valley will begin the extensive preparations for the Spring Reunion (May 17). As you can see from the events above, there are many things you can become involved with in the Valley of Reading this spring. As always, the choice lies with you. If you do not become involved, the loss will be yours. The Feast of the Paschal Lamb is March 23, 2014, at 2:00pm. Rose Croix is honored to conduct this solemn memorial service for our deceased brethren. The officers of Rose Croix have been working hard preparing for the Feast. This is our opportunity to remember and honor our deceased brethren. The service is open to the public. Please make time to come to this memorial service for our deceased brethren. Refreshments will be served after the service. We are presently planning for the spring reunion and look forward to having a great time. I encourage you to get involved. Just ask what you can do to help or get involved. It takes many brethren to make a reunion successful and additional help is always needed. There are so many tasks and jobs to do that one of them will be just right for you. If you get involved you will have a much more rewarding Scottish Rite experience. Do you know a Brother who is feeling under the weather or needs some encouragement? Simply go to the member services portion of the Supreme Council website (scottishritenmj.org) and click on "Brother to Brother". Complete the attached form and the Scottish Rite NMJ will process your request for a card from Headquarters offering get well greetings or encouragement from the Sovereign Grand Commander to the individual you identify. I am looking forward to see all of you at the Feast of the Paschal Lamb and the Spring Reunion. 3

9 PAY YOUR DUES ONLINE Safe and Secure Log onto: Click on: Pay your dues online Visa, MasterCard, Discover, echeck Accepted MEMBERSHIP MESSAGE Great news spring is here again. Our Spring Reunion is just around the corner and rehearsals will be beginning. It is the time to talk to all those good masons who would make good Scottish Rite Masons and encourage them to petition the Scottish Rite. If you are a new Scottish Rite Mason ask how you can get involved. There are many jobs and activities in which you can participate. There are many good men out there who would enjoy being Masons if they just knew what it is all about. That is where you come in, spread the word, bring in petitions to your Lodge and then into the Valley. Make it your goal to bring a new member this spring. Each Lodge has a Lodge Ambassador who can help you with obtaining petitions, getting Scottish Rite material and answering questions. If you have a prospective new candidate for Blue Lodge or the Scottish Rite, invite them to the Feast of the Paschal Lamb on March 23, 2014 at 2:00 PM and show them how Scottish Rite Mason respect and honor our deceased brethren. Scottish Rite Core Values: Reverence for God, Integrity, Justice, Tolerance, Devotion to Country and Service to Humanity. Scottish Rite Valley of Reading THE FRATERNITY OF CHOICE. Harry E. Hackman, Jr. 33 Membership Chairman harryhackman@comcast.net Why should I remain a member of the Scottish Rite? I can t get to the meetings! Being a Mason is not just attending meetings, although you do get more out of the craft if you get together with your brethren. Being a Mason is living a good life based on Masonic principles and living up to your vows. And when you pay your dues, you are supporting a cause you believe in, helping to continue a fraternity of free men who believe in moral character, love of country and the practice of the tenets as we are taught in the Lodge and in the Rite.
