2 The Commander-in-Chief Ill. William H. Tennant, Jr., 33 I believe that Spring will come again this year. There had been considerable doubt up to a few days ago. However I do think we will have another one, belated as it is. In keeping with Spring, our # 1 job at the present would be the Spring Reunion. The schedule has been published and we are certain to have another enjoyable day of Scottish Rite Fellowship. Degree rehearsals have been going on for a few weeks and the cast members are starting to shape up to the demands of our faithful directors. The Directors of each of the degrees deserve much credit for their years of dedication to the Valley. We appear to have several new participants in some of the degrees this Spring. This is satisfying to see some of the members of very recent classes taking parts in the various degrees. This is what we have needed for some time. It gets tougher each year to cast older members in parts that call for young men. Keep encouraging them when you see them at the reunion. I will make another appeal to the Spring class again this year and see if we can acquire more of these new members to get involved and better yet, to stay involved. Remember-- Petitions Petitions-Petitions. Lets make May 2014, A Reunion one to remember. 2 Valley of Reading Sports Polo Shirts Can be ordered At the Spring Reunion Reading Consistory Sublime Princes of the Royal Secret, 32 TO CELEBRATE The Feast of Tishri a rededication ceremony A Members Only, Black Tie, Dinner inclusive to all Master Masons Guest Speaker Ill. 3 Sovereign Prince Speaks Stephen R. Higgins Most Wise Master s Moment Ill. Harry E. Hackman, Jr., 33 Tempus fugit as they say. The year has indeed passed quickly unbelievably so. To me it has been a memorable one. It was filled with inspiring ritual, great fellowship, enjoyable social events and a few weather related disappointments. I realize that my year is not quite over --- there is the Spring Reunion and one Stated Meeting yet to occur but I would like to take this opportunity to thank both the Valley of Reading and my fellow Princes for giving me the opportunity to serve as Sovereign Prince for the past year. A presiding officer does not start with a blank slate. He works within traditions. He builds upon the work and successes of his predecessors. He seeks the advice, opinions and suggestions of both past and present officers and solicits the help of others as circumstance dictates. As Sovereign Prince I had excellent traditions to build upon and received much helpful advice from my brother Princes. As coordinator of the Holiday Happenings I was blessed with the aid and cooperation of the other bodies of the Valley as well as the Ladies Auxiliary, the SRVC, the Train Club and Hiram s Scottish Riders. To the extent that I have been successful during my tenure it was due primarily to the generous and unfailing assistance of others. Although my year as Sovereign Prince is almost over, I have no plans to disappear but merely to move into another phase on my Masonic journey. I have enjoyed my term as Sovereign Prince and again thank you all for the opportunity to serve. One of the laws of nature is that the older you get the faster time passes. Another year has gone by and I am about to be relegated to the Past Most Wise list. It has been my privilege and pleasure to have served you as your Most Wise Master this past year. I am leaving the post in good hands. Knight Arthur K. Armstrong is well prepared and will do a great job for the Valley. The Past Most Wise Masters have worked hard to develop a team and a line of officers that will serve this Valley well. The future is very bright for Rose Croix. Congratulations to all my fellow officers of the Valley on a job well done. It has been a pleasure working with all of you. The Chester County Club is having the John Gay Memorial Sports Banquet on June 19, 2014 at the Revere Tavern in Paradise, PA. This evening is always a great time. All the profits from the dinner will go to the Masonic Children s Home at Elizabethtown and the Masonic Learning Center at the Valley. Please come out and support this event. I guarantee you will have a good time and help a couple of worthwhile causes. I look forward to the new officers taking their turns as leaders in the Valley. For any organization to obtain long term success, the most important job for existing leaders is to prepare the new leaders to do an even better job then was done in the past. I am confident that the Brothers who will be filling the Valley leadership roles in June are well prepared and ready to move our Valley forward. The year will be the 100th anniversary for Francis Marion Highley Chapter Knights of Rose Croix. MEMBERSHIP MESSAGE Our Spring Reunion is here and we look forward to a large class of candidates. It is not too late to encourage all those good masons who would make good Scottish Rite Masons to petition the Scottish Rite. Membership is everyone s responsibility. There are many good men out there who would enjoy being Masons if they just knew what it is all about. That is where you come in, spread the word, bring in petitions to your Lodge and then into the Valley. Make it your goal to bring a new member this spring. Each Lodge has a Lodge Ambassador who can help you with obtaining petitions, getting Scottish Rite material and answering questions. Whether you have been a member for 40 years or 1 year get involved in your Valley. Come out to the Spring Reunion and help out or just observe the degrees. Attend the Spring Reunion and show your support for the cast, those who work behind the scenes and the candidates. I look forward to seeing you at the Spring Reunion. 4 A TRIBUTE TO THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED On Tuesday, May 27, 2014 we will have the privilege of honoring those officers who have just completed their term of office. It has been said that the secret of Masonry, like the secret of life, can be known by those who seek it, serve it, live it. Like all things worth knowing, no one can know it for another and no one can know it alone. Fellowship, rapport, and communication are necessary. Members in Scottish Rite who have served as officers in the Scottish Rite have these essentials which make life happier by enlarging their circle of acquaintances and providing more opportunities for congenial fellowship and service. We can truthfully say to each of these brethren Well done thou good and faithful servant. The Valley is deeply grateful for the contributions you have made during your years of service in order to make our Valley grow. We are proud to honor: BROTHER ANDREW E. WEITZENKORN, 32 Thrice Potent Master BROTHER STEPHEN R. HIGGINS, 32 Sovereign Prince BROTHER HARRY E. HACKMAN, JR., 33 Most Wise Master The Valley of Reading is grateful for having these brethren as leaders in their respective bodies. To all officers, past and present, and to all the members: As we approach the twilight of this Scottish Rite year and the dawning of a new, let us resolve to continue to contribute our best to our Brethren, our Lodge, our Country, and our God. SPONSOR S RESPONSIBILITY For every petitioner for the Scottish Rite degrees there are two Scottish Rite Masons on whom rests a responsibility for the proper training of that petitioner. The two Scottish Rite Masons who sign the petition have a responsibility that does not end with their signature on the petition. If you invite a guest to a gathering at your home, you make sure that he meets all your guests, and is made welcome and comfortable. Isn t the Master Mason you recommend to Scottish Rite Freemasonry entitled to the same courtesy? As his sponsor, is it not your duty to take an interest in his progress? It seems to us that it is, and that you should see to it that he fully understands the fine lessons of our degrees. If you recommend a man to the Scottish Rite, satisfy yourself that he is receiving that for which you recommended him. To do so is but a Masonic courtesy and it is also your duty as a Scottish Rite Mason. Let s all give this matter some serious consideration. It will certainly bring forth good results if you attend the conferring of the degrees at our Reunions. 5

8 50- YEAR MEMBERSHIP RECOGNITION HOW ABOUT YOU When you receive your meeting notices do not cast them aside without reading them. Each one of our publications does and will contain something of interest to you. We plan some splendid features for each meeting and Reunion, and the only way you can keep yourself posted on what is going on is to read your notices. Today, as we pick our way through this dizzy, giddy, whirl of modern change and development, we give thought to leaving our mark on the walls we build so that someone a thousand years from now may see what we have done. The brethren that we honor today have already left their mark; their works are everlasting, and they have lived in accordance with the truth and precepts of our order. The Masonic influence has long been felt in their lives as they passed through the corridors of the temple and practiced the truths and mysteries of the order; they believed in them, and practiced them, and made them an integral part of their lives. They found that Masonry is a way of life a set of virtues and fundamental truths which must be a living, vital part of our existence, not merely a series of ritualistic performances. It is a privilege and an honor to once again pay tribute to those who have reached their 50 th anniversary in Scottish Rite Masonry, a milestone in their Masonic lives. CONGRATULATIONS to all of the following brethren. Proper honor will be bestowed upon them during the Saturday session of our Spring Reunion, at which time those who are able to attend will receive their 50-year pins from the Commander-in-Chief. Those who cannot attend will receive their pins through the mail. Marshall P. Allen Delight E. Breidegam, Jr. Henry J. Christ Le-Roy A. Christman Gerson Y. Cohen John Ditzler Clarence J. BE FRATERNAL When you attend a Scottish Rite Reunion, do not sit down in a corner and expect every member to come and shake hands with you, and in case they fail to do so, complain that the members are not fraternal and lack sociability. It is no more their duty to do so than it is yours. Every member should aim to promote the fraternal spirit by saying a friendly word of greeting to the other members. Try it. You ll like it. The dues are now payable. If you have not paid yours - please do so NOW. Send to: Scottish Rite Office PO Box 6013 Reading, Pa Pay by credit card at Phone: Fax Valleyofreading.org valley.of.reading@comcast.net When you pay your dues do not forget your Voluntary contribution to the Building Fund and The Hospitaler s Fund. Late Dues Are Costly Brethren, in this day of rising costs, you can help your Valley save money by paying your dues this spring within 30 days of receiving the first dues notice. In July of 2013 the office mailed late dues notices to more than 600 members, and in October, the office mailed third dues notices to 355 members who still had not paid their dues. These late notices cost your Valley more than $ in postage and processing, plus administrative expenses; and are unnecessary. If you have not paid your dues, please help your Valley reduce its expenses by sending your check today.
