9 REPORTING-- SUMC PARTICIPANTS AT THE JUNALUSKA PEACE CONFERENCE, MARCH 1-4 Our group from SUMC found plenty of ideas to bring home from the recent Interfaith Peace event. MEETING THE OTHER: CAN WE TALK? was the conference theme. Working successfully across what are often antagonistic religious boundaries, the Interfaith Conference is a model for communications between those with differences. It included three Keynote speakers from the Abrahamic tradition (a Rabbi, Muslim scholar and Christian pastor) music, worship, workshops and discussions all providing learning opportunities for growth between persons with differing viewpoints. Given the special opportunities and challenges for our congregational life (including the United Methodist s Way Forward)---and after de-briefing here at home, we feel these ideas and tools are worth sharing. Susan DelGrande, Marilyn Boyce, Ray Bihary, Bonnie Bihary, Dave Johnson, Adele Hyla-Brewster, Jim Brewster We had many questions. How can we bridge gaps in communication? How can we facilitate meaningful conversations. Work on increasing the unity in our congregation? What we learned. Watch for the impact of our statements, realizing that promoting fear is seldom wise and never kind. Given so many diverse opinions and issues, the question Can we listen? is more important than Can we talk? The ability to really listen and see other viewpoints is essential. Humility is a key to effective communication. (From a Jewish speaker) Develop your kindness muscle. Deciding which is more important being right or being kind will help. Only debating an issue can lead to divisiveness and hinder effective communication. Sacrifice is important in working toward communication. Rather than clinging to one s ideas, changing one s attitude inside is a way facilitate and encourage unity. A church like SUMC may need to organize itself beyond worship times or already organized groups to promote communication and unity. Small groups and classes should set guidelines to encourage dialogue that promotes harmony among their members. Peacemaking is practical, too. Regarding differences of opinion in the church, we recall John Wesley s advice: In essentials, unity; in nonessentials, liberty; and in all things, charity. We affirm the church is a place where radical love --- God s love through Christ---is practiced and encouraged.
