1 Epiphany Star Editor: Rusty Ogden Episcopal Church of the Epiphany 1101 Sunset Drive P. O. Box 116 June 2012 Guntersville, AL Help Clean and Renew our Library Believe it or not, our parish Library does have a great many people who borrow books. The problem is that through the year it often gets used as a storage room. Father Bill would like to change that idea. We need a crew to weed out old books that aren t really needed any longer, and replace them with many of our new books. Many of those books will come directly from Father Bill s personal library. Beyond that, the library needs to rid itself of much of the junk that it has accumulated over the past few years. A work day is scheduled for THURSDAY, JUNE 14 TH at 10am. Father Bill will buy lunch for all that come to help. Hour Shelia Myrick will not be serving breakfast for June, July and August. Coffee Hour is a time of fellowship that is very close to Fr. Bill s heart. Please consider choosing a Sunday and providing a light snack with your fellow parishioners. This is also a time that can be used to celebrate a special occasion in your life. The Coffee Hour sign up sheet is on the Nave bulletin board for the summer months of June, July and August. Breakfast will start again in September. Please choose a Sunday to serve refreshments (it does not need to be a full breakfast) either after the 8:00 a.m. service or after the 10:30 a.m. service. Dear Ones, Summer has arrived. School is out, the days have turned hot and people head out on vacations. Life somehow turns a bit slower. Even church slows down a bit. This does not mean don t come. We want each and everyone of you to continue your worship throughout the summer. And if you happen to be away on a Sunday there is, more than likely, an Episcopal Church near by. If there isn t an Episcopal Church, any denominational church will do. You won t hear anything bad (I hope!), and you ll be so thankful you spent a bit of time worshiping God. Please bring your bulletin back with you from the church you visit and we ll hang it up on the bulletin board. Hopefully we ll be amazed at the array of churches our folks visit this summer. Several of our programs will be discontinued for the summer. Sheila Myrick will not be cooking breakfast. She is taking a long overdue break. (See the article to the left.) We don t have our regular Wednesday evening worship service and programs. Everything else is still up and running and we might even throw in a movie night in the Woodall Commons. Please keep in mind that even though Epiphany slows down a bit our bills do not. We do pray that all of us keep our pledge current. Epiphany currently is in good financial shape, but we often times hit a rough patch come September. PLEASE HELP! Also remember, if you are headed out on a Sunday morning for boating, fishing, a picnic, golf, or whatever, why not come to our marvelous 8am worship service before you go. We always have a great turnout for that service and you ll be out by 8:45am. You will be delighted with the new friends you ll meet. With love, Faithfully, Bill We received generous donations to complete the drainage ditch in front of the church property. Work should begin soon. We are also about to complete the last major project of the Woodall Commons (upstairs is to be finished later) and there are a number of small items to be completed this year. We plan to pour the remaining sidewalk, which will require a new dumpster pad right away. This will include the front porch, a walk to the existing dumpster pad (giving us handicap access to the building without going through the Parish Hall) and a connecting walk around to the patio (with some modification to the walk at the head of the existing steps to level it). We have this in our Woodall Commons budget but we do not currently have the cash to complete the project. If you feel you can help with this, please mark your checks for Commons. We are just shy of the $10,000 to complete this project.
2 Epiphany Star Page 2 Parish Retreat at August 25 26, 2012 Camp McDowell is "God's Backyard." When you see the beautiful 900+ acres of forests, canyons, and waterfalls; and once you experience the facilities, service, and events you will understand why Camp McDowell is such an important place to so many people. Have you been thinking about whether or not to go to the retreat? Attending the Parish Retreat each year can become a great tradition for your family. If you want to spend a weekend with your church family doing fun things like fishing, swimming, hiking, canoeing, playing all kinds of games from softball to card games, eating lots of good food, reading or just sitting on the front porch in rocking chairs and visiting, then you ll need to sign the registration sheets posted outside the Parish Office. 3 Epiphany Star Star Page Page 6 3 Are you interested in examining and strengthening your faith within the context of a small group of fellow pilgrims? If so, Education for Ministry, aka EFM, may be for you. Through the eyes of biblical scholarship, Church history and theology, members of the group are grounded in Christian formation and wrestle with situations of daily living and current issues. EFM is more than a Bible study it involves theological reflection and recognition of the many and varied facets of God s revelation. It involves lively discussion around the table. Having been a part of Epiphany s Christian education, EFM continues for its eleventh year this fall. The group meets each week from September through May. The course is administered through The School of Theology of the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn. There is a cost to the program, but please speak to the mentor if this would prevent your participation. As a first year student (this is a four-year program, however you decide each year whether or not to continue) your focus of study will be the Old Testament. You ll discover there are two creation stories and that the Noah saga of the flood is found in many religions. But more than that, you ll discover how it relates to your life and how you can live out what you now believe. Consider the opportunity. EFM is intense. It is a unique course within a unique setting. Because of the small group nature of EFM, the number of participants is limited to twelve. If you are interested, please don t hesitate. We hope to form the group as soon as possible. Registration materials are in the office, or contact mentors Rita Winters at or Lamar Auman, for more information. Hope to see you in class! 2012 EFM graduates, Bob Moses, Rosalind Hall and Will Smith Adult Sunday School, Led by Lamar Auman, will cover the books of James and Peter. Children s Sunday School classes will be available for all of Epiphany's children who wish to attend! This will be led by Michelle Bradshaw with the help of Kim Booth and Kathy Thompson. The lessons will follow Ms. Michelle's usual format; It will start with an Introductory Activity, followed by the Lesson, then an Art/Craft or game with refreshments, ending with Summarize/Memorize for a prize. The curriculum will be based on "Weaving God's Promises," an Episcopal publication. Summer Sunday School will start at the regular Sunday School starting time, 9:30am. Children s Church will begin at 10:30 a.m. To contact Michelle Bradshaw, bradshawm77@gmail.com The hot ticket of the year for The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Leeds features the women of Ivy Gap returning with Showtime at First Baptist, the sequel to well-loved and widely produced First Baptist of Ivy Gap. The hundredth-anniversary picnic of First Baptist of Ivy Gap was a smashing success, except for one thing: the bolt of lightning that struck the church s steeple, igniting a fire that destroyed the sanctuary and Mae Ellen s prized Wurlitzer. In the wake of the disaster, May Ellen, Vera, Olene and Yankee newcomer Annie - led by Edith the pastor s take-charge wife - plan a benefit talent show to help the pastor meet a crisis. But Lucille, the mayor's ultra-conservative wife, is a Deputy Police Chief who likes men in charge of everything and fights the talent show. But through laughter, tragedy and showbiz, the church - and the women - survive, stronger than ever. There is a sign up sheet on the bulletin board to see if there is interest in this play, which performance, and if we have enough people interested to take the bus. Location: Show dates: Admission: Episcopal Church of the Epiphany Leeds 1338 Montevallo Road, Leeds, AL June 8, 9, 15, & 16 at 7:00 PM June 10 & 17 at 2:00 PM $15.00, which includes the customary hors d ouerves and beverage at intermission
4 Epiphany Star Page 34 Father s Day Altar Flower Dedications Father s Day is June 17th. This dedication is a wonderful and thoughtful way to remember those who mean so much to us; your husband, your father, your brother, your grandfathers, a favorite uncle, or a special friend. The Altar Guild is taking dedications for Father s Day. A dedication form is on the counter in the church office. Each dedication is $5.00. If you have any questions please see Marsha Babb. The Jail Ministry the Epiphany Mission Team helps with is in June. 7:00 am at Town Hall. Questions? Call Lee Hoggle at or Susan Armstrong at NOTE FROM THE TREASURER: Summer is upon us and this time of year Epiphany really struggles when folks get behind on their pledges because of vacation and the like. If too many allow their pledge to fall behind, Epiphany falls seriously in danger of not meeting the commitments that we make. The end of June we will be sending out a mid-year report of your giving. Please review the information and if you find it possible to become current in your pledge to both General and Building Fund we would appreciate it. If you have any questions, please contact me or Martha Ross, Adm. Asst. ( ) Faithfully, Guy Caffey Church Treasurer HAVE YOU BEEN TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL? All who have been "Touched by an Angel" and would like to share the experience, and anyone who is not sure but would like to listen or participate, are invited to a luncheon in Woodall Commons on June 6 at noon. Ann Branum will begin the discussion. The lunch, immediately following the 11:30 Wednesday service, will be served by Crawmama s and is $5. Feel free to move them to where you will be sitting. Please return crayons, pencils and unused paper to the bag prior to leaving. We are blessed you are here! 10:30am Children's Church Needs Volunteers We will continue to have Children's Church at 10:30am throughout the summer. Children's church will be held upstairs in the children's chapel. On occasion we may go out to the playground to enjoy God's great outdoors, weed and harvest the children's garden, or practice a bell choir piece for an upcoming performance. We will bring the children into the church service during the announcements, they will process to the altar with the children's offering during the doxology, then will go sit with their parents. Please contact Shelly Hardin epiphanyyouth@epiphanyguntersville.org if you would like to help!
