3 Epiphany Star Page 3 The Beatitudes As the Gospel story shows us, Jesus was much more interested in passing out blessings than he was in handing down laws. The best example is his famed "Sermon on the Mount," recorded in The Gospel according to St. Matthew, Chapter Five. When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. "Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. St. Augustine, a 4th/5th century bishop of north Africa and famed theologian of the early church, called these teachings the "Beatitudes." (The word is derived from the Latin adjective beatus, which means happy, fortunate, or blissful.) Augustine taught that these were the "perfect standard of the Christian life." Christian theologians and scholars throughout history consider this sermon to be the finest distillation of Jesus' words into a code of conduct, or ethic, for Christians to follow. It is no mistake that Jesus chose a mountain for his stage; the parallel to Moses' handing down of the Law from Mt. Sinai is deliberate and intentional. Just as God gave the Law to the people as a guide for their future life together a life defined by mutual respect, peace, and prosperity Jesus takes God's intentions one step further. As he says elsewhere in Matthew s Gospel, Jesus came to complete the Law. With the Beatitudes, we are provided a guide that helps us understand how God works in relation to God's people. It is clear from the Biblical witness that God's motivation always begins with love. This is the underlying theme of God's actions through the miracle of creation, the gift of the Law, the words of the prophets, and finally in the witness of Jesus Christ himself. We, in turn, take God's love for us and translate it into a way of loving one another. Jesus was the living embodiment of God's command of love. He showed us how to live not just with one another, but also for one another. In other words, we are called not just to share the blessings of God, but also to become the blessings of God. In the holiday seasons that are almost upon us, we will have multiple opportunities to become God's blessings. Thanksgiving and Christmas are occasions for giving thanks for all the gifts we have received, and then returning those gifts by sharing them. Let us all be encouraged in the weeks to come to imprint the Beatitudes on our hearts, that we might "become the blessings" God has so richly shared. Blessings & Peace, Fr. Aaron The Feast of All Saints

4 Epiphany Star Page 4 The vestry held a regular monthly meeting on September 15, 2015 at 1101 Sunset Drive, Guntersville, AL. The meeting was called to order at 6:34 p.m. by Senior Warden Guy Caffey. Mrs. Sarah Sartain, Staff Officer for Ministry Development & Clergy Transitions was a guest at the meeting. The meeting was opened in prayer by all present, and Mrs. Sartain led a group discussion of Matthew 25: prior to distributing and discussing several documents related to Mutual Ministry Assessment. September 30 was selected as the date for vestry members to turn in the completed Mutual Ministry Assessment questionnaire. Mrs. Sartain will return to Epiphany with the assessment results on Sunday November 15 (or November 22 as a backup date). The vestry welcomed new vestry member, Jan Maxwell. Minutes of the previous meeting were corrected and distributed on September 8 by for further correction. A motion was made, seconded and passed to approve the minutes as distributed. The August 2015 monthly financial reports were ed to vestry members on September 11, 2015 by treasurer, Shari Harrison. The August financial reports were reviewed and accepted. The Finance Ministry customary was ed to attendees for review on September 9, The treasurer explained that this customary was subject to ongoing revisions and that each change would be submitted to the vestry for approval. The customary was accepted (9 in favor, 1 abstained). A Building & Grounds Ministry request to allow more than one family member to participate on the ministry was tabled during the August 18 vestry meeting. That topic was brought to the floor, and a motion was made to allow more than one member of a family (spouses/siblings/parent-child) to serve on the Building & Grounds Ministry provided that only one family member contributes to the ministry having a quorum, and only one family member is allowed to vote. The family members themselves decide who will vote at each meeting. The motion was seconded and passed by a vote of 6 in favor, and 4 opposed. The August 2015 Outreach Ministry report was ed to attendees on September 8. It was mentioned that several people who came for Beans and Rice on the second Saturday of September asked if cooked beans and rice were available because they were hungry. Beginning the second Saturday of November, some cooked beans and rice might be provided for those who don t have access to a kitchen. Jan Maxwell mentioned that she will be attending Christ Church to invite them to participate in Room in the Inn, and that Epiphany will be open to RITI neighbors on November 20. In pending business, 1. Lamar Auman is still planning events and working on the Camp McDowell/ Bethany Village Capital Campaign. 2. Fr. Aaron and Guy Caffey attended the Memorial Garden Ministry meeting on August 30. They reported that: a. The Memorial Garden Customary is a working draft. b. They have a bid from Chorba Contracting on renovating the garden. c. They asked to have a vestry liaison. Jan Maxwell volunteered to be the liaison for the Memorial Garden Ministry. 3. A policy is needed on soliciting extra-budgetary funds. The Fabric & Yarn Ministry is looking for funding from parishioners to reimburse the cost of material that will be used to make blankets given to our neighbors during RITI. This discussion was tabled until the next meeting. The next vestry meeting will be on October 20, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. PARISH ELECTION RESULTS Elections were held October 25.
