1 EPIPHANY STAR Episcopal Church of the Epiphany Sunset Drive P. O. Box 116 Guntersville, AL June, 2018 The Altar Guild is taking dedications for Father s Day. Dedications will appear in the June 17th Sunday bulletin. Dedications are $5.00 each and are an excellent way to memorialize or thank the Father figure in your life. Dedication forms are available in the church office. Do you wonder what Medicare premiums will cost or if there is supplemental insurance? What if you cannot afford your medications on a fixed income? What is the difference between Medicare and Medicaid? Medicare has many working parts and it is easy to get confused. Medications are expensive even with insurance, but there are options for help. On June 3rd, 9:30-10:15am, join Rachel Morris as she talks about Medicare, Part D, Extra Help and other insurance and healthcare related topics. Rachel is a licensed social worker with twelve years experience in medical social work. Contact Rachel via , almsw119@yahoo.com or phone, if there are specific topics related to Medicare and Medicaid you would like her to cover. WELCOME EPIPHANY S NEW STAFF MEMBER HANNAH HILLEY We are pleased to introduce Hannah Hilley as Epiphany s new Communications Assistant. Hannah resides in Albertville with her husband Danny and their two children Danny and Karah. JULY 4TH COOK OUT The Brotherhood of St. Andrew will be hosting a 4th of July cookout in the parking lot this year. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided by the Brotherhood. Bring a side dish to share. Fellowship and food starts at 6pm, fireworks at 9pm. Bring your lawn chairs and join us. Hannah has three years experience in office administration and accounting assistance. She has settled in to her new position and is now the primary person responsible for communications. Please welcome Hannah by introducing yourself to her as you have the opportunity. Her hours are Tues-Thurs, 9:00am to 3:00pm and Fri. 9:00am to 12:00pm. Her address is hannah@epiphanyguntersville.org. She may be reached at the church office by calling

2 Epiphany Star Page 2 A Change of Pace, A Change of Perspective As the summer months begin, I hope we all have an opportunity to change the pace of our lives, at least for a little while. I pray that we can all experience some rest and relaxation, enjoy some holiday/vacation time, travel, or visit with family and friends. Preferably, all of the above! Our lives seem to remain busy all the time, but there will always need to be a day (or days) of sabbath rest. So God ordained it in the story of Creation, when on the seventh day God rested. This was to be a sign to the people that a day of rest was a necessity for a full and complete life. As the prophet Isaiah says: In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and confidence is your strength It is easy these days to get caught up in the ever-changing world around us. The latest news cycle, or political scandal, or social media trend seems designed to grab our attention, evoke our sympathy or outrage, and (inevitably) push our buttons. Often, we would all do well to pause, take a step back, and reflect on our own feelings. After all, in Psalm 46 the author quotes the Lord, saying Be still, and know that I am God These are words to the wise. They are a reminder that we place our ultimate trust in God. Whatever the news of the day or the current crisis of the moment, we trust that God is with us through it all. We can take comfort in knowing that the God who loves us is also the God who watches over and protects us. I pray you have a sense of God s peace and God s presence in all things, but particularly this summer. I hope you have the opportunity to take a break from the many things that might distract you. As Jesus himself says in Matthew s Gospel: Come to me, all you who are weary and carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Blessings & Peace, and Have a Great Summer! 4 Epiphany Star Page 4 World Refugee Day Ingathering World Refugee Day, an international observance observed on June 20th each year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the situation of refugees throughout the world. On December 4, 2000, the United Nations General Assembly in Resolution 55/76 decided that, from 2001, June 20 would be celebrated as World Refugee Day. In this resolution, the General Assembly noted that 2001 marked the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. Episcopal Migration Ministries (EMM) lives the call of welcome by supporting refugees, immigrants, and the communities that embrace them as they walk together in The Episcopal Church s movement to create loving, liberating, and life-giving relationships rooted in compassion. EMM s desire to honor the inherent value of human connection brings communities together to love their neighbors as themselves. EMM acts in covenant with individuals and partners to ensure the equity of all voices as they work to serve, engage, and sustain the mission. Although EMM lacks local resettlement partners in Alabama, there is a partner, Bridge Refugee Services, Inc., with offices in Chattanooga and Knoxville, Tennessee (Bridge Refugee Services). To assist newcomers in the resettlement process, Bridge Refugee Services solicits donations of in kind gifts, household items ranging from the small to large (In Kind Gifts). In support of EMM and Bridge and in recognition of World Refugee Day, Epiphany is sponsoring an ingathering of the items on the list to be delivered to the Chattanooga office on Monday, June 25th. Ingathering bags will be available at Sunday services beginning on June 3rd. The bags will also be available in the church office. A list of items will be attached to the bag to facilitate your shopping for our neighbors in need. Please mark your calendars and plan on supporting this vital ministry.
