1 YOUTH SUNDAY May 3, 2015, 10:30am Episcopal Church of the Epiphany 1101 Sunset Drive * P. O. Box 116 Guntersville, AL Please join us on May 3rd for Youth Sunday, a celebration of our children and youth. Sam Jones will be delivering the sermon; children and youth will be serving as ushers, greeters, acolytes, torch bearers and readers. Our young people will raise their beautiful voices in praise and thanksgiving as they lead the service music. Come with an open mind and heart to see and feel how the Holy Spirit is working through the youngest of our parishioners. Please join us for refreshments following the service to honor our young people and graduates. Editor: Rusty Ogden May MOTHER S DAY ALTAR FLOWER DEDICATIONS Mother s Day is Sunday, May 10 and the Altar Guild is taking dedications for the altar flowers until May 6. Each dedication will be listed in the bulletins on that day. This dedication is a beautiful way to remember those who mean so much to us; your wife, your mother, your grandmothers, sister, a favorite aunt, or a special friend. A dedication form is on the counter in the church office or in the rear of the nave. Each dedication is $5.00. END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR PARTY May 17, 2015 Woodall Commons Patio Please join us for food, fellowship and FUN immediately following the 10:30 a.m. service. We will have hamburgers, hot dogs, yummy sides and the mile long ice cream sundae! Wear your backyard picnic clothes and bring a lawn chair to relax in. Kids and kids-atheart, bring a bathing suit or change of clothes so you can get wet on the inflatable water slide (weather permitting), and don t forget a towel! We will also have a bounce house for our little ones. Pray the weather cooperates so we can enjoy God s great outdoors right outside our backdoor. Sawyerville Day Camp coordinators are asking Epiphany to supply 30 swimsuits for this year's camps. Suits are around $10 each. Please consider giving to this wonderful ministry. Donations will be taken through May 17th. Make checks out to Epiphany and write Sawyerville on the memo line of your check or on your envelope if a cash donation. Sawyerville Day Camp is a week-long day camp in Greensboro, Alabama, sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama and staffed, mostly, by high school and college-aged volunteers. There are three sessions this summer, starting June 6. Please consider being a prayer partner. Visit sawyervilledaycamp.org for more information. For questions, contact Kelly Auman, aumankelly@gmail.com or call her at To date, $170 of the $300 needed has been collected.

2 Epiphany Star Page 2 Alleluia! Christ is Risen! The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia! It is a joy to welcome us all into the Easter season, when we celebrate the Resurrection of Our Lord. Perhaps many of us think only of the actual Sunday of the Resurrection when we think of Easter. But Easter has a much fuller and richer meaning. Indeed, Easter is not just a single day, but an entire season of the church year. It stretches over the Great Fifty Days until the Sunday of Pentecost. But Easter s meaning extends even further than these calendar definitions. We should always remember that Easter is more than a day or a season. It is more than a theological concept or philosophical conceit. It is more than an historical event. In fact, Easter is a way of life. Life in the resurrection the life we enjoy now as Christians is powerful, transformational, and eternal. Jesus gave us the definitive sign of new and transformed life in the fact of the resurrection. He himself was the firstborn of the resurrection a sign to us of God s power, and a sign that nothing would separate us from God s love. The power of sin and death was ultimately and decisively defeated in Jesus resurrection. And with that knowledge, we are invited into a new life. Life in the resurrection. Life in the resurrection is powerful: what once seemed impossible, suddenly becomes possible. What we once couldn t conceive, suddenly becomes a reality. What was once shrouded in darkness, suddenly becomes revealed in the light. Life in the resurrection is transformative. In other words, God changes us. In an often difficult and dangerous world, God gives us the grace and forbearance to deal with whatever challenges we may face. And life in the resurrection is eternal. Through Christ s deliverance through death and into the resurrection, we are given the blessed assurance that God is with us, and will always be with us. We are no longer bound by things temporal; we turn to that which is eternal. Indeed, the Easter way of life new life in the Resurrection is the core of our character. Jesus makes us who we are; he gives us our identity. We are God s people: empowered, transformed, and loved for all eternity. Thanks be to God! Yours in Christ, Fr. Aaron Easter Season, 2015 I would like to thank the anonymous person who dedicated the altar flowers to me on Sunday, April 19. It meant so very much to me. Thank you. Kay Benefield OFFICE VOLUNTEER GUILD Linda Katz could use a couple more office volunteers, and a few that are willing to fill-in on occasion when someone cannot meet the schedule. 4 Epiphany Star Page 4 Adult Christian Formation WEDNESDAY BOOK CLUB The Road to Santiago Continuing the Celtic Theme Father Bill and Rita Winters have again been working with the most excellent tour guides ever, Clive Richardson and Ann Gray, to create the most imaginative pilgrimage yet. In 2016, they will embark on their seventh pilgrimage to another Celtic land the Galatia area of northern Spain. The journey will be to a place where pilgrims have traveled for over a thousand years the picturesque and historic El Camino de Santiago, culminating in a visit to Santiago de Compostela. The major cities in this exquisite pilgrimage are Madrid, Escorial, Segovia, Avila, Salamanca, Zamora, Leon, O Cebriero, Santa Eulalia de Bovado and Santiago de Compostela. The planned route will include visits to ancient Roman viaducts and castles, blended together with the splendor of 15 th and 16 th century Spanish Christianity. In Leon, the pilgrimage will be on the Camino itself, enroute to Santiago where the Cathedral houses the venerated relics of St. James. A planned extension will be to the mysterious and beautiful Portugal, eventually departing from Lisbon. The dates of the Pilgrimage will be April 30 through May 10, The extension to Portugal and Lisbon will be May 10 through May 14, The Epiphany point of contact for more detailed information is Shari Harrison, , sbharrison520@gmail.com. Or, please feel free to contact Fr. Bill at , brwinters@bellsouth.net. A book study will begin May 6 at 6:30 p.m. The first book will be Eternal Life A New Vision by John Spong. The book may be purchased at Amazon.com. The Kindle Edition is $10.99 This is a remarkable spiritual journey about his lifelong struggle with the questions of God and death, Bishop John Shelby Spong reveals how he came to a new conviction about eternal life. God, says Spong, is ultimately one, and each of us is a part of that oneness. We do not live on after death as children who have been rewarded with heaven or punished with hell, but as part of the life and being of God, sharing in God s eternity, which is beyond the barriers of time and space. Spong argues that the discovery of the eternal can be found within each of us if we go deeply into ourselves, transcend our limits and become fully human. By seeking God within, by living each day to its fullest, we will come to understand how we live eternally. MEN S BREAKFAST & BIBLE STUDY Beginning on Friday, May 1 st, the men of the parish are invited to join Fr. Aaron for a 7:00 a.m. breakfast and Bible study gathering, which will meet regularly on Fridays. This is B.Y.O.B.&B., which means bring your own breakfast and Bible. It is convenient and simple both for the contributor and for the office staff. We have many satisfied parishioners who are now taking advantage of this opportunity to easily support Epiphany with their donations while saving time and energy for everyone! Just ask them. Nancy Brennan: If you pay bills through automatic deductions from your checking account, why would you treat your pledge to Epiphany differently? Make it automatic. I did and love it! Jerry Ann Holt: Taking advantage of Epiphany s new automatic draft offering is a great way to pay your pledge each month. No more checks to write. It s a great service. If you aren t signed up, you should be. Shaun Packard: I find automatic payment to be very easy. This way I don t forget and I know where I am with my pledge. It works nicely for me. Bickie Raspilair: I am thankful for the automatic transfer from my bank to cover my pledge. It makes me the faithful steward I want to be. Month after month my pledge stays current even if I am sick or out of town or just plain forgetful. I recommend it to you. If you re interested in signing up for direct debit for your contribution, please contact Charlene Mason, Financial Assistant, in the church office at
